2 Welcome to Grace Cadral Welcome to this sacred house prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean Grace Cadral If you are new to Grace Cadral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for cfee and conversation across plaza in Chapter House Library after 8:30 a.m. service or in Dining Room after 11 a.m. service. about today s readings Isaiah 58:1-9a, (9b-12), I Corinthians 2:1-12, (13-16), Matw 5:13-20 Reading texts can be found at end service leaflet. In our readings this week, both Isaiah and Paul invite us to deepen our understanding God s call, challenging us to a more pround, riskier and more foolish-looking mode witness to world s wounds and needs. They rouse us to greater collaboration with divine response. When actions are self-contained or self-protecting, y do not reach into heart our common life, or fulfill our common yearning for space to unfold our gifts and potentialities. They may satisfy law or meet cultural norms, but we re left hungry and restless at our core. We step out those boundaries into uncharted territory, in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. Will Spirit accompany us and guide us here? There s a lot at stake. Jesus insists that our identity and our acts as people God are central to our being, cannot be abandoned or defaulted upon, and carry a persistence meaning that has a far greater impact than we can imagine. Our daily faithfulness to deeper laws kindness, justice, and solidarity with vulnerable can carry us, are carrying us, closer to kingdom heaven however hard this can be to see as we put one shaky foot ahead anor. This reflection was written by Carol James, a congregant who has been part cadral community for over a decade. She is co-mentor Education for Ministry program, returning after serving from She currently leads evening prayer providers in our Jail Ministry and is a cadral staff member. highlights Lion Dancers Today 11 a.m. service Cadral and Courtyard The Lion Dance has been performed in Chinese New Year celebrations for thousands years. 6 The Nicene Creed All We believe in one God, Far, Almighty, maker heaven and earth, all that is, seen and unseen. The Prayers People The people stand. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only Son God, eternally begotten Far, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one Being with Far. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by power Holy Spirit he became incarnate from Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. After each petition Lord, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect. The Confession Sin All may kneel. Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For sake your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to glory your Name. Amen. The presider pronounces God s absolution. The Peace Presider The peace Christ be always with you. All And also with you. Welcome The Holy Communion On third day he rose again in accordance with Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver life, who proceeds from Far and Son. With Far and Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for forgiveness sins. We look for resurrection dead, and life world to come. Amen. Offertory Sentence An fering will be received for ministries Grace Cadral. Thank you for your generosity. 4

10 The Readings Isaiah 58: 1 9a Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people ir rebellion, to house Jacob ir sins. Yet day after day y seek me and delight to know my ways, as if y were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake ordinance ir God; y ask me righteous judgments, y delight to draw near to God. Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice? Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to Lord? Is not this fast that I choose: to loose bonds injustice, to undo thongs yoke, to let oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with hungry, and bring homeless poor into your house; when you see naked, to cover m, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, glory Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. 1 Corinthians 2:1 12 When I came to you, brors and sisters, I did not come proclaiming mystery God to you in lty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words wisdom, but with a demonstration Spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on power God. Yet among mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom this age or rulers this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before ages for our glory. None rulers this age understood this; for if y had, y would not have crucified Lord glory. But, as it is written, What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him se things God has revealed to us through Spirit; for Spirit searches everything, even depths God. For what human being knows what is truly human except human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God s except Spirit God. Now we have received not spirit world, but Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand gifts bestowed on us by God. Matw 5:13 20 Jesus said You are salt earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are light world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under bushel basket, but on lampstand, and it gives light to all in house. In same way, let your light shine before ors, so that y may see your good works and give glory to your Far in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish law or prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke a letter, will pass from law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one least se commandments, and teaches ors to do same, will be called least in kingdom heaven; but whoever does m and teaches m will be called great in kingdom heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter kingdom heaven.
