2 Welcome to Grace Cadral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cadral If you are new to Grace Cadral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across plaza in Chapter House Library after 8:30 a.m. service or in Dining Room after 11 a.m. service. Find out about our programs for children, youth and families at coffee hour. about today s readings Genesis 1:1-5; Psalm 29; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11 Reading texts can be found at end of service leaflet. It s not hard to see why people in early Palestinian cultures would view water as a deeply holy substance: life-giving, purifying, primal and revered. Our reading from Genesis today places water firmly at mysterious core of creation, one of first and most powerful things on which God s creative agency acts. Water was not to be taken lightly in a desert land; thirst of body often echoed thirst of spirit in songs of an arid country. Yet John directs his followers to look past baptism of water, past what cleanses and soos, to baptism of Spirit. There s both power and risk in following Jesus out of waters of Jordan, into bustle of towns and villages of Judea. The gift we carry, whatever we encounter, is God s love, and name we will always be known by, whatever we do, is beloved child. To those beloved ones we baptize today: we wish you all good things this good world offers, including an abiding awareness of how deeply you are woven into love that brings this world to life. You are cherished as you are blessed and named, and you will be cherished every step of your journey. Carol James has been part of cadral community for over a decade. She has served as a co-mentor in Education for Ministry program. She currently leads evening prayer providers in Jail Ministry and is a cadral staff member. 13 The Readings Genesis 1:1-5 In beginning when God created heavens and earth, earth was a formless void and darkness covered face of deep, while a wind from God swept over face of waters. Then God said, Let re be light ; and re was light. And God saw that light was good; and God separated light from darkness. God called light Day, and darkness he called Night. And re was evening and re was morning, first day. Acts 19:1-7 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through inland regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to m, Did you receive Holy Spirit when you became believers? They replied, No, we have not even heard that re is a Holy Spirit. Then he said, Into what n were you baptized? They answered, Into John s baptism. Paul said, John baptized with baptism of repentance, telling people to believe in one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. On hearing this, y were baptized in name of Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on m, Holy Spirit came upon m, and y spoke in tongues and prophesied altoger re were about twelve of m. Mark 1:4-11 John baptizer appeared in wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins. And people from whole Judean countryside and all people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in river Jordan, confessing ir sins. Now John was clod with camel s hair, with a lear belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with Holy Spirit. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of water, he saw heavens torn apart and Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, Beloved; with you I am well pleased.
