Sunday School for our children and youth is suspended but a number of things are on the upswing or at least continuing! One was a trip to Davis Stuart with a van load of adventurers to learn about this important ministry related to the Presbyterian Church. The residential home for children and youth is located near Lewisburg. Second was Vacation Bible School which happened June 18 through 22. The theme for this year was Epic Moments: Mega Sports Camp. The children were involved in Bible study, crafts, play and good eating. A third joy of summer was Joe s Picnic. A good time was had by all! A fourth joy of summer has been the reception of new members, including Adriennne and Hollis Vance, Steve and Debbie Cook, and Wilma and Robert Miller. We look forward to receiving more new members as the summer progresses. Another joy of summer to look forward to is a 5th Sunday Hymn Sing which will happen Sunday, July 30. Worshipers will get to make suggestions of songs to sing as we proclaim God's word and offer him praise through song as our primary act of worship that day. Sunday at dmpc Adult: 9:30am Coffee in White Chapel 9:30am Breakfast & Bibles at Henry G s 9:45am Dr. Lacy Bible Class in Dunham Room Youth: 9:30am Breakfast & Bibles at Henry G s Worship Service at 11:00 am and Live broadcast on WDNE, 1240am Continuing every Sunday at 9:30a.m. and 9:45a.m. respectively are our two adult Sunday School Bible Studies... Breakfast and Bibles class which meets at Henry G's down town and the Dr. Lacy Class which meets in the Dunham Conference Room. Needless to say, God does not take a vacation. In the midst of our vacations and change of pace this summer, let us remember that our need to worship and give God praise continues. May God bless our days of leisure and continuing call to be the people of God! In the love of Christ, Peter Vial 450 Randolph Avenue Elkins, WV July 2017
2 Actions and Information from recent Session meetings: 1. Heard plans by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for a Neighborhood Picnic on August 13th to meet the families in the neighborhood. September 9th will be a day of service entitled "God's Work, Our Hands". 2. Received new members by letter of transfer: Steve and Debbie Cook, Wilma and Robert Miller and Hollis and Adrienne Vance. 3. Granted Peter Vial vacation June 21-24, and July 2 and Invited Dr. Robert McCutchen to preach on July 2nd. Emma Scott Garden Club The Emma Scott Garden Club thanks DMPC for the use of the Fellowship Hall for their meetings and Plant Sale. In return, Garden Club members planted the begonias in front of the Church to show their thanks. Pictured helping are Ken and Marion Hanscom and Julia Cassells. Joe s picnic... The sun was up early on June 10 with the promise of a special day at Joe s. Donnie and Sonja, co-chairpersons of the Fellowship Committee, had worked hard to make sure nothing had been forgotten. The Heartly Able Crew had been out to mow, clean up, and spread their magic. This had been a hard week because of machine malfunctions, but they were on a mission and they made extra trips and worked even harder to complete that mission. Tim and Corney Tolley came out early to haul 9 tables and 25 chairs to Joe s. David Hyer had the grill loaded with all his grilling supplies and was headed out early to set up so he and Donnie could have grilled hot dogs ready at 12 noon. Others were also busy preparing for this time that is only celebrated once a year. At 11:40am, there were only about 10 people at the Joe s and fear of a small group was growing. But then they started coming and they came all afternoon! We had many guests, including one that was not invited! A 36 inch black snake was resting on the rafters until he fell to the floor, landing right behind Julia Brumfield! The snake quickly looked for an exit and Brian McDonald escorted him to the creek! An abundance of food was soon on the tables. The children ignored the bucket of toys brought for them to play with and went to the creek. Tables under the trees beside the creek filled up while many stayed in the pavilion enjoying the refreshing breeze. Before the meal was over, the guests had become friends and all were enjoying God s gifts to us. Any regrets? Yes! We had so much fun that nobody had time to take pictures! God Bless, Mina Cupp
3 Presbyterian Women PW prepare 96 Ham & Cheese for the Tuesday Lunch! Host church for Holy week was The Church of Christ. The Presbyterian Women gathered for a hymn sing to celebrate the Birthday Offering event this year. We were delighted to have Mark Armentrout, our assistant musician, leading us in song. PW Moderator, Brenda Hermanson, welcomed members, friends, mothers and daughters and Samantha White helped to pass the basket for the offering.
4 Davis Stuart Trip... On June 1, Rev. Peter Vial and a gaggle of 12 women headed south to pay a visit to the Davis Stuart residential facility for youth in Lewisburg, WV. Davis Stuart has long been supported by DMPC. " For the past ninety eight years, this unique ministry has been providing for the needs of West Virginia children and their families. Originally established as a Presbyterian orphanage, Davis Stuart now provides therapeutic residential services. As visitors, we were treated to lunch, and then had a question and answer period with three of the facility's staff: Stephanie Plybon, Interim Executive Director; Amanda Scott, Director of Marketing and Development; and Matt Evans, Spiritual Life Director. Among other things, we were informed that the organization owns 500+ acres of land, provided by a member of the Davis Stuart family. They are a 44-bed facility which houses their population of youth ages There are gardening opportunities, a cooking program, a therapeutic horse program, and a substantial number of cattle which form portions of the treatment in which the youth are able to participate. Ms. Scott took us on a tour of the campus, showing us the Memorial Chapel, living quarters, buildings for staff to live in, and the horse barn. We were able to pet the horses and learn about where they come from and how the students are taught to work with them. At the request of Mina Cupp who organized the trip, DMPC women provided aprons and towels, which are only some of the items much-needed by the facility. It was a delightful trip enjoyed by all (in spite of the long ride!) To learn more about this ministry you can visit their website:
