1 HIGHLIGHTS First Presbyterian Church In Sunday s paper I was reading an article about how short walks, even as short as two minutes can add up to big health benefits. Really? I had always thought that in order to be healthy you had to commit to long, sustained, sweat producing exercise on a daily basis.something that post accident seems impossible for me to achieve and has left me rather discouraged. But, it turns out that good health is actually within my reach! The writer of Sunday s article, Gretchen Reynolds (Peninsula Daily News, Sunday, April 22) points to a study that found that those who moved more often, especially if they managed about an hour in total of physical activity over the course of the day, cut their mortality risk in half. And it did not matter how they accumulated those minutes. I had thought the only exercise that counts is one full hour of heart pounding exertion, but instead the truth is: the little things that people do every day, like walking from their cars to the office or climbing a flight of stairs, can and do add up and affect the risk for disease and death. This is all super good news to me! It inspired me so much I immediately got up and went for a walk! This I can do! Yippee! As I walked I thought about how much our physical health is like our spiritual health. We get discouraged that we can t become super Christians. As a pastor I hear people express discouragement that being a really spiritual person is out of their reach. That it takes some kind of super spiritual strength or discipline to become a really strong Christian. But, it turns out like getting our bodies in shape it depends on what we re doing every day. If we managed about an hour in total every day of spiritual activity it would make a huge difference! Even short spurts of prayer, bible reading, singing along with a worship song on a CD all can add up to big spiritual health benefits. The key just like with our bodies is that we do it

2 daily. We have every reason to believe that we can be in the best spiritual shape of our lives simply by deciding to turn to Christ throughout our day! I like the concept of growing in spiritual health simply by turning to Jesus at regular, even short intervals during the day. It s something we all can fine tune to our own schedules. It s doable and potentially life changing. See, every time we turn to Christ in prayer, song, scripture reading, or meditation we will find that the Spirit meets us. And it s the Spirit who breathes life in our turning to Christ. It s the Spirit who draws us close to God, who shares Christ s mind, wisdom and heart of compassion with us. It s the Spirit who shapes us more and more into the very image of Christ. So, not only do we become spiritually fit as we turn to Christ throughout our day we become literally transformed people in Christ! Pretty exciting stuff! We truly can be new people in Christ! Spiritually stronger, healthier and more vibrant! Let s just do it! Joyfully building spiritual muscles alongside you, PASTOR NOMINATING COMMITTEE (PNC) - STATUS REPORT The PNC continues to meet weekly. Since last month we are in full search mode. We have received training from Corey Schlosser-Hall on the process of evaluating the candidates, the position is listed on the PC (USA) website and we have received 40 applications with more continuing to come in. We have updated our church website to include information regarding our search and have completed our church Promotional Poster which will be sent to potential candidates. By the end of the March we will have evaluated 40 Personal Information Forms (applications) as we work to compile a list of the top 10 candidates. The Committee is working very well together and we ask that you continue to pray for our guidance and discernment as we move through the process. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil this is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:9-13 If your heart is yearning for some unstructured time away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, in one of the most beautiful settings in God s creation, then please save the weekend of May for the All-church Retreat at Camp David, Jr. on beautiful Lake Crescent! Open to men, women, and children of all ages; individuals, couples, and families, Invite a friend, or a family that you are close to. Join us for a day or stay the whole weekend. Activities abound! There will be games, arts & crafts, a campfire sing along, hiking, biking, swimming, canoeing/kayaking, curl up with a good book, or even take a nap! 5 ANNA S EPISTLE FOR MAY HIGHLIGHTS Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Psalm 19 tells us, The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies show forth His praise. We, God s people, are also commanded to sing to God s glory and show forth God s praise. Tunes matter, words matter. We sing to and about God, reflecting truth that never changes..absolute, sure, foundational. We sing as the family of God, united together. We sing, reflecting upon the attributes of God, creator, three-in-one God, all loving, all seeing, all knowing. Singing is something that Christians all over the world engage in together spiritually, arms linked, hands joined, voices raised together. Take a few minutes right now, don t wait until you ve finished reading this, and get out your smart phone or go to your computer. Google the prison choir, Zomba, in Malawi. In the most awful of conditions they sing praises. Go to You Tube and check out Welsh Choir Hymn Sings. Wow! Many of these are working class folk, quite a few are coal miners, singing most magnificently. Then one more - Look up the song, Total Praise, sung by 1500 singers, Stockholm Gospel Mass Choir. I never imagined there were that many people in post-christian Sweden who would lift their hands and sing like that! It inspires us to know we are part of a great company of believers world-wide people who are not afraid to show the world how we praise and worship our God. May we be profoundly stirred and join in the mighty ministry of blessing God and witnessing our faith with our singing here on the North Olympic Peninsula at 1 st Presbyterian Church. Blessings, Anna NEW BOOK CREDITS CONGREGATION FOR LESSONS LEARNED BY FORMER PASTOR TED MATTIE A new book written and published by former pastor Ted Mattie highlights lessons he learned from our congregation during his 37-year career, lessons that shaped his life and ministry. With humor and compassion, Ted uses brief vignettes to illustrate his insights. On Holy Ground is available for purchase at Port Book and News or on Amazon and Kindle. Royalties from all sales will benefit our Church s Scholarship Fund. 5

7 OFFICE MANAGER POSITION FILLED On behalf of Session and the Personnel Committee we would like to announce that Rita Frick has accepted the new position of office manager. She will oversee all the activities of the office while working closely with Pastor Wendy, Head of Staff. A major part of her new job will be getting proficient in G Suites, as Session continues to move forward with technology. Rita will also work on transferring membership data to an online system in order to keep information current. She will continue to answer phone calls, distribute mail, maintain the church calendar (online) and prepare church materials. TALL TIMBER FOR SUMMER 2018 We have learned of the great time our High School kids have at Tall Timber. The kids not only experience unique activities, they experience spiritual growth. All kids who have attended before have received brochures and know all the details of registering for camp. PARENTS of all school age children, are you aware there are sessions for all school age kids. They do not need to wait until High School for these memorable opportunities. For Elementary students there are three short sessions. July for those entering grade 1-3; July 8-11 for those entering grade 2-5; and July for those entering grade 4-6. MIDDLE SCHOOL/Junior High youth have a choice between two sessions. Those entering grades 6-9 can chose between July 1-6 and July For HIGH SCHOOL, entering grades 9-12 have several choices listed in the brochure and on line. NEED A BROCHURE? THERE ARE SOME ON THE TABLE OUT- SIDE THE OFFICE, or contact Rosalie Doty. All may register on line: registrar@talltimber.org. There is a $50 non-refundable deposit due at the time of registration. Balances will be due 10 days prior to camp. Please let Rosalie know if you register because we pay two-thirds of the total cost of the session. The church sends the two-thirds directly to the camp. Also, when we know who is going to camp, there is a possibility of helping families connect for transportation. 7

8 The Living Last Supper Maundy Thursday, March 29, at the First Presbyterian Church in Port Angeles, eleven Apostles gathered. Twenty minutes before the start of the service, we learned that the twelfth Apostle James (Bruce Emery) was taken to the hospital. And they wouldn t release him to do the show! WWJD? He said, Follow Me! Waiting quietly in a pew to watch the dramatization sat Curt Horne. Curt was literally plucked out of his seat, was hustled upstairs, given James robe to put on, handed the soliloquy, and thus became the Twelfth Apostle. No one could have filled this spot at the last minute with as much feeling and emotion as Curt did that evening. The dramatization given that evening seemed to be presented by the real Apostles. Perhaps each man who studied his Apostle actually turned over his part to his Apostle. However the Apostles were portrayed, however the audience listened, however the Holy Spirit touched each person, surely the presence of the Lord was in that place. Thank you for the enthusiasm and support of everyone who contributed to the evening s service. Pastor Wendy Taylor, Anna Nichols, Scooter Chapman, Ross Canning, Beth Ann White, Jodee Force, Judy Ginnity, Ardith Hansel, Loretta Chapman, and Rita Frick. And especially to the Apostles (from left to right) Doug Erickson, Bob Pappas, Paul Stutesman, Dan Cobb, Randy Schuchardt, Tony Peterson, Jim Lewis, Tom McCulloch, Curt Horne, Dave Logan, Jason Mayo, Andy Anderson, Rick Leffler. 8

I loved the cake, flowers, chocolate basket, gifts, and cards of well wishes. It was a very generous outpowering of affection and truly appreciated. Blessings to you all. Betty Roper *********************** People often ask us at TAFY what kind of results does TAFY have from all you do and how can you evaluate this? We have a young mom who has been with TAFY since inception in She has been in and out of recovery and abusive relationships. She currently has 2 years clean and is in safe housing. She has custody of her children and participates in skill building activities and has learned to take advice from people who care about her and her family. TAFY is a safe place for her to do child exchanges a couple of times a week with the father. TAFY is where she comes when she needs advice and friendship. Her children call all the volunteers grandma and grandpa and feel unconditional love. This is the inspiration we need to keep doing what we do. Because you help us financially, we can continue to help them in so many ways. Providing examples of healthy and happy relationships and smart decision making skills are the beginning of a new life for many. THANKS!
