MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR DR. WILLIE J. WRIGHT A lot of adventure awaits you after graduation. Whether you will be moving on from elementary to middle school, or transitioning from middle to high school, or stepping into a college or university. Graduation isn t the end of a tough journey characterized by exams, homework assignments, and early morning bus rides. It is the beginning of a beautiful one. As you begin this new journey in your life, here is some solid advice to consider. Face life head-on, learning from past experiences and advice from those whom you love and trust. Most of all learn from God, He will give instructions on best practices to navigate life successfully. Start each day with God, believing in your dreams and living according to your life purpose. If you have not yet discovered God s purpose for your life, take time to flesh it out, and live by it. This will bring great joy and meaning to your life. Often, we are not immediately ready to assume our dreams and life purpose because more development is needed. Go through the development process. This process include obstacles and uncertainty. However, remember, it is during these moments we experience the greatest personal growth. If you stay the course, your dreams will become a reality. Finally, before you act, listen. Before you react, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. We congratulate you and praise God for your achievements, and send good wishes too, for a future filled with happiness and your fondest dreams to come true. Congratulations! Sincerely, Dr. Willie J. Wright Jr. Pastor, Capital City Seventh-day Adventist Church 3

DR. CARLTON P. BYRD MESSAGE FROM THE SPEAKER Graduating Class of 2018 Capital Seventh-day Adventist Church 168 S. Allen Street Albany, NY Dear Graduating Class Members of 2018: Congratulations to you on reaching this milestone in your life! Please know, however, that this is just the beginning! God has much more in store for you! With this in mind, I would like to share two quotes with you that I believe will bless your life s journey. The first comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson. He says, Don t go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail. Hence, we re counting on you to blaze many new trails! Secondly, God s Word says, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). Let God direct your paths, and I m confident you will realize the plans He has for your life. May God continue to bless you in your academic pursuits, and remember Education and Christ lay a great foundation for eternity. Sincerely, Dr. Carlton P. Byrd, Speaker/Director Breath of Life Television Ministries 4

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT LEADER DR. NATALIE E. BARCLAY, DDS Capital City Seventh Day Adventist Church Department of Education Dear Graduates: It gives me great joy to share in this phase of your life. As you take steps toward reaching your goals, whether it is entering the first grade or your medical residency, I admonish you to lay a strong foundation that will hold firm as you continue building your career. A faulty foundation will eventually lead to a building that will have cracks, leaks and eventually fall, but a level, and sturdy foundation will give you a building that will stand the test of time. You may think no one will see the foundation that a building stands on, but the finished structure will reveal the quality of your foundation. Starting your journey or building with Christ as the foundation will guarantee a strong and successful result. You may have a small leak or broken wall, but it is easier to repair or replace a leak and or wall than to replace an entire foundation. You are building your character as you continue your education. Your foundation will determine the type of person you will be in life. The world does not so much need men/women of great intellect as of noble character. It needs men/women in whom ability is controlled by steadfast principle. Education pg. 225 Your character will be seen before your works, and this will determine the amount of success you will obtain. Spend quality time in study with God and you will notice how much you retain while studying for school or preparing for work. Begin each assignment, each test, each interview and each patient with prayer. It will bring peace of mind. The stability of thy times and the strength of thy happiness shall be wisdom and knowledge. Isaiah 33:6 that wisdom and knowledge which God s word alone can impart. Education pg. 229 Congratulations graduates you have accomplished a great feat. Continue onward and upward standing on a firm foundation that is Jesus Christ our Lord. Yours Truly, NEBarclay,DDS Natalie E Barclay, DDS Education Ministry Leader 5

AWARD IVY NELSON SCHOLARSHIP I vy May Nelson raised twelve of her fifteen children to adulthood, but she mothered scores. She was everybody's mother in the village of Norwich. She taught all who entered the yard as well as us, her children, how to live, love, study, laugh and bear up under adverse circumstances. Six years before her death, my brother, Newman, sat on the verandah of the family home and said to her, Mama, how would you like to be remembered?" She replied," Newman, I never knew my father; he died when I was very small. My mother found it very difficult to give me the proper tools to get a sound basic education. So I ended up leaving school in the 4th class. I made a pledge to myself that should I have children, I would do everything to give them the opportunity to have a sound basic education. I would like to be remembered as one who gave my children the best educational opportunities so that they may do the same for their own children." Mama did succeed. Among her children: - A former College professor and Assistant Commissioner with the State of New York; - An Electronics Engineer; - An Accountant; a Hospital Business Manager; A Scientific Researcher at Yale University; CEO of an Agricultural Company; a Special Assistant to the Executive Director of a Pharmaceutical Company and Chief Clerk to the New Haven Police Department. So, in her honor, my sons and I discussed the establishment of a scholarship fund in her name at Capital City Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Ivy Nelson Scholarship Fund will help others in a small way to achieve their educational goals. The funds awarded to individuals can ON- LY be used for educational activities: help with tuition, purchase of books, etc. Written by Dr. Norma Nelson-Dwyer 6

As You Graduate Years ago when you began this journey The end seemed so far away, Now it is here, But this is not really your end; Because life has a series of beginnings and endings, Some of which you ve already experienced. This is just a commencement for you, The beginning of another journey, A journey whose end you may think you know, But will only experience when you come to it. In the beginning you set some high standards, You knew they were, high, but were determined not to fall short, You followed your heart, never letting up, nor looking back. Today you accept your reward. Take pride in all you ve done. Be aware that your educational achievement Is an invitation to change the world? Take pride in how far you're come, Have faith in how far you can go. Behind you are all your memories, Before you are all your dreams, Around you are all who love you, Within you, all you need. Always remember, though it seems like the end, It is only another beginning. You ve come to the place where you find out who your really are.th Be bold enough to use your voice, Be strong enough to listen to your heart, Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire, Be strong enough to live the life God has planned for you. -Ruth Dorothy Pottinger- 20
