THE ANCHOR V O L. 1 6 N O. 3 M A R C H A Note from Pastor Joe S P E C I A L P O I N T S O F I N T E R E S T : Elder Jobs Missions As I sit here writing the March Pastor's thoughts, I have realized that at the end of March we will be celebrating Holy Week and Easter. Time most certainly flies when you are having fun. In the newsletter you will find the schedule of services, activities scheduled, and times for these events during Holy Week and Easter. Midweek services are dwelling on what took place after Jesus gave up His Spirit. We hope you will take time to come, learn and worship with us. I want to thank all of you who participated in the Survey taken for the Family Friendly Partners Network. Our Hope had the best percentage of members taking the survey which speaks well for our commitment to being a part of this group. Stewardship Easter Info LWML News BUG Club Bible Bingo Preschool News Thrivent News Resurrection Cookies As most of you know the Family Friendly Partners Network is designed to help implement programs for our church members. Those programs will offer support for the expressed needs revealed in the recent survey you completed. We will focus on the needs of our youth; both the early childhood age, elementary, middle school, high school, college age students. Also we will focus on individuals, couples, and parents. Planning and working to provide enrichment programs to help meet the needs of these groups. Examples of this effort include: Ideas and help for caregivers of aging parents, for faith sharing, for growing relationships with God, and for parental guidance for faith building inside the home. Over the course of the next three years we plan to work on and achieve our goals in this vast area of needs. A core group of our members will continue to attend training sessions provided by the Family Friendly Partners Network & work to develop programs to meet our goals. Thank you for your participation in the first phase of this process, your responses to the survey have provided insight into certain areas that we need to focus on as we move forward. Our hope is, that with these endeavors, Our Hope members will be guided to grow in their faith and the ability to help those whose lives they touch. Next month I will specifically share with you the areas Our Hope members shared as areas of need in our ministry to each other. Jesus Christ is the Anchor of Our Hope!

Elder News Greetings to all in the Our Hope family. I hope you are ready to kick your winter blues cause Spring is just around the corner. It was brought to my attention at the meeting that some church members were inquiring about issues currently concerning the Board or Elders and interworking of our meeting, so I thought I would give you a run down. First priority, coverage of Worship Services. This is the assigning of an Elder for each service including weddings and funerals on a monthly basis. Next is Pastor Joe s monthly report. This normally contains current concerns, needs, and reflections on projects on going. This is very important as the primary responsibility of the Elders is pastoral care. This is followed by discussion of the issues at present facing the Board of Elders. Here are some of them: Elder Roster & Rotation, Assigning Church members to Elders/New Lists, Winter season energy conservation/electric heaters, closing of proper doors etc. when closing the building, progress of Family Friendly Partnership Network Surveys, expansion of our BUG Club, Contacts/Invitations to school families, Assigning Ushers, Readers & Greeters. I could go on but I hope you get the idea. After completion of discussion and any roundtable talk our meetings are adjourned. As always if there are any particular needs or concerns that you have please contact your Elder as we will help any way we can. Now I would like to commend, Mr. Wenndt & Mr. Pierzchala, our Evangelism Chairmen on the use of Eph.4:1 and the Greek definition in the February newsletter. Good job gentlemen. As we move headlong into another year it is my prayer that we will see increased church service attendance not only by members but by many new members and the public. I see a hunger in people today, especially young people for something to believe in. The Lutheran Church offers that. Pastor Joe s sermons are soundly based in scripture. There are a lot of so called churches today that don t even offer that, let alone the Sacraments. It is my belief that if we spread this message about Our Hope, we will grow. We have a lot to be proud of. We have the largest Lutheran Preschool in N.E. Indiana. With the dedicated and talented staff doing what they already do so well it will continue to grow. Pray for Peace. Walk in God s Shadow. Dan Hartman, Board of Elders Evangelism I'm sitting in on a class about world missions. Perspectives On The World Christian Movement is focused on unreached people groups (people who do not have an indigenous church in their own language) around the world. How many unreached people groups are there? Over 4,000! There are even unreached people groups in the U.S., about 17% of foreign nationals who live here. But do you know how many people groups, both reached and unreached are in Fort Wayne? The host from International House ministries in Fort Wayne just told us there are over 80. Eighty different nationalities living around us. Wow! So, if the Lord God has brought people from all over the world to our backyard what do you suppose we should do? You're right, we probably should engage them. In reality, they don't care what type of tea we serve, not whether we have proper biscuits. Nor do they care if we wear jeans or suits. What they do seek is welcome and grace. Once engaged, we then are able to inviting our new friends to Hope Lutheran to come and see. Evangelism without stress. Guess what? We've just became missionaries to non-americans without getting a passport, airline tickets, nor needing to eat interesting food. Let's join hands and hearts to encourage one another to welcome people, including those that are like us. Go, and serve the Lord! Steve Pierzchala, Evangelism Co-Chairman

STEWARDSHIP The 2016 Our Hope Stewardship effort is off to a good start. Our committee is currently the largest in the church. Serving this year are: Dave & Sharon Byerley Lisa South John & Jennifer Thonert Jeff & Beth Alexander Jim Fortman All members of Our Hope As members of the faith, we are called to serve our Lord. Romans 12:6 So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. 1 Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God s grace in its various forms. As members of Our Hope, each of us has a responsibility to invest our talents and to commit a portion of our time in service to our ministry. In an effort to help you discover or clarify your gift or gifts, we will soon offer a Talent & Interest survey. This is a very important effort, one that is foundational to the continual growth of Our Hope. 6 PRESCHOOL NEWS I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in truth. 3 John 4 We feel so blessed to have made it through a February without any school cancellations! That hasn t happened in several years. February was a month of celebrations. We celebrated Groundhog Day, Valentine s Day, President s Day, the start of Lent and Leap Year. For a short month, it is very busy! Scholastic Book Fair March Open House & Science Night March 17, 6-8 p.m. Grandparent/friend Day March 18 March will hopefully get us excited for Easter and Spring. We are praying the Groundhog is correct and we don t have a late winter. The week of March will be jam packed for the preschool. Our annual Scholastic book fair will be that week. (Don t forget books make great Easter gifts!) Hope you will stop by and help support the school with a purchase. We will be open between Sunday services. Also that week, we will have our Open House and Science Night from 6-8pm on Thursday, March 17. Invite anyone you know who is interested in our preschool to stop out and meet the teaching team, take a tour of the building, and have fun with some hands on science opportunities. Then on Friday, March 18 we will be hosting our Special Friends Day celebration. The school will be filled with Grandparents, special friends and preschoolers. Pastor will be having a special chapel service that day. It is one of our favorite days of the year! We will continue teaching our students about Lent and how Jesus died on the cross for them. Thank you to everyone who ordered from our Pizza Man fundraiser. We are so appreciative of all the support we receive from all of you! Registration for our summer and fall classes is in full swing. We are already ¼ of the way to filling our fall classes! We give thanks to God for blessing our ministry. The teaching team and I wish all of you a blessed and happy Easter! Youth & Family Ministry News Well, it looks like we will be sending 2 youth and 2 adults to this year s National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, LA. It should be an awesome time. Keep watching for announcements about more fundraisers to be held for this event. Attention all youth!! We need your help with the Easter Breakfast as well as the setup before and cleanup after. If you are able to help please send an to: ourhopeinfo@gmail.com and indicate when you are able to help. Remember many hands make light the work. Thanks for all your support and help!

THRIVENT FINANCIAL NEWS: 1. Choice Dollars 2. Bake Sale for Pies for Easter - proceeds of sale for AED for Church You may have received a notice from Thrivent advising you that you have Thrivent dollars to direct to your choice of approved facilities, if you have not received a notice but know that in the past you have had choice dollars to direct please call Thrivent to verify whether you have any dollars at this time to direct. These dollars are made available 4 times a year and may be directed quarterly, but may be directed if you prefer once yearly. The cut off date for last years dollars is in March, Our Hope has benefited from this program as many of you have chosen to direct these funds to our church. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Recently I learned that Gina Pippenger has been writing and applying for grants for Our Hope Lutheran Church and School. Grants that are awarded often require that the facility receiving them have up front seed money before grant dollars are distributed. One of the grants she is writing is for an AED for our building. This is a lifesaving device that can resuscitate a person whose heart has stopped beating. These devices have very simple directions and can easily be used by an adult when the need arises. It is my hope that we are able to obtain one for our church facility before an incident does occur that would require it's use. I know that these devices are most helpful when used immediately after the heart stops, I do not want to be faced with regret if the need does occur and we have not made an effort to protect our members in this way. Carl and I applied for and have received notice that our Thrivent Action Team request for a fundraiser to begin to build a fund for this purpose has been approved. We are asking for volunteers to take part in a bake sale for pies for Easter Dinner for church members and their families. Thrivent will provide us with a debit card in the amount of $250. to be used to purchase the ingredients for the pies. Anyone wishing to bake a pie or two to donate may sign up on the church bulletin board and place their grocery list for their supplies in the envelope placed on the board. Carl and I will do the grocery shopping and get the supplies to you that you request. Those wishing to order a specific pie for Easter are asked to place their order on the order list on the bulletin board. We will also advertise this fundraiser at Our Hope's School Open House to be held March 17,2016. Pies will be available for pick up at church Maundy Thur., Good Friday, or Easter Sunday. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

FOOD FOR YOUR SOUL This month s recipe is submitted by Darla Pierzchala. RESURRECTION COOKIES Read the whole recipe before beginning...try doing this together with your children or grandchildren before Easter Sunday. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Ingredients: 1 cup whole pecans 3 egg whites 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vinegar Pinch of salt You need: Wooden spoon, Bible, Zipper baggie, and tape Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldier. Read John 19:1-3 Let child smell the vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30 Add egg whites to the vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11 Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into a bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27 So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16 Beat with a mixer on high speed for minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3 Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto waxed paper-covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matt. 27:57-60 Put cookie sheet in the oven. Close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matt. 27:65-66 GO TO BED Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16: 20 and 22 On Resurrection morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie! Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Resurrection Day, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matt 28:1-9 Hopefully you are enjoying this extra page and will consider being a contributor of one or more of your favorite recipes. If you have a story to go with the recipe it would be great to publish it also. All recipes can be ed to: ourhopeinfo@gmail.com, given to Lisa South or placed on the church office desk.
