4 The Reverend Dr. Marvin A. McMickle In May, 2011 The Reverend Dr. Marvin A. McMickle was elected to be the 12th President of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Rochester, NY. He is Professor of Church Leadership, and the Director of the Program of Black Church Studies. Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1948, Dr. Marvin A. McMickle is a 1970 graduate of Aurora University in Illinois with a B.A. in Philosophy. His alma mater also awarded him the degree of Doctor of Divinity in He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1973 and did two additional years of graduate study at Columbia University in New York. He earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey in He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio in He was also awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters by Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, OH in In 2012, Dr. McMickle was named a Princeton Theological Seminary Distinguished Alumnus. Dr. McMickle was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1973 at Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York City where he served on the pastoral staff from He served as the Pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church of Montclair, New Jersey from During those years Dr. McMickle was an adjunct faculty member at Fordham University, Princeton Theological Seminary, New Brunswick Theological Seminary and New York Theological Seminary. He also served as President of the New Jersey Council of Churches, a two-term President of the NAACP Montclair Branch, and was a member of the Montclair Board of Education. In addition he taught biblical studies courses inside of Ossining Correctional Center (Sing Sing) in Ossining, New York between Dr. McMickle served as the Senior Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio from During that time he led the church in establishing a ministry for people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. This ministry was the first of its kind in the entire country. The church also offered ministries in the areas of job training, a hunger center, three AA units, a credit union with over $2 million in assets and a tithing program in which the congregation tithes out to the community 10% of its annual income every year. During his service at Antioch 14 men and women were licensed or ordained into Christian ministry. Dr. McMickle served as President of both the NAACP and the Urban League in Cleveland, President of the Shaker Heights Board of Education and the Karamu House Performing Arts Centers. Presently he is a member of the Board of Trustees of Cleveland State University, Cleveland OH. A Cleveland journalist described Rev. Dr. Marvin McMickle as a prominent leading religious leader and a dominant figure in struggles for social, racial and economic justice. Rev. McMickle gives honor to his working class parents for providing him an early understanding of the travails of people who work hard for a living and are the beneficiaries of collective bargaining. Dr. McMickle was also the Professor of Homiletics at Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio from 1996 to Upon retiring the faculty named him Professor Emeritus. Dr. McMickle is the author of 15 books and dozens of articles that appear in professional journals, magazines and preaching commentaries. He is a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Board of Preachers at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. In the winter semester of 2009 he served as a Visiting Professor of Preaching at Yale University Divinity School. Dr. McMickle has been married to Peggy Lorraine Noble since 1975 and they have one son, Aaron who resides with his wife Pilar, and their daughter, Aaliyah in New York City. ST. 5 Donna and Stanley Edwards Stanley (Stan) and Donna Edwards relocated to Chester County in 1995 from Bowie, Maryland and joined St. Paul s Baptist Church in West Chester in Stan has been a Trustee at St. Paul s for 16 years and Donna is active in several ministries. Stan retired as a regional marketing manager for American Signature Furniture after working in the furniture industry for 35 years. Donna is currently a corporate consultant and has worked in territory sales her entire career. They are the parents of 3 children, Ashley an attorney in Atlanta, Alexandra, a marketing executive for the Discovery Channel in New York City and Stanley, Jr. (deceased). Stan & Donna Edwards created Stanley s Dream Foundation after the death of Stanley, Jr. to brain cancer in January He was 14 years old at the time. In the throes of grief, they decided the best way to channel that grief would be to keep Stanley s memory alive by raising money for college scholarships and childhood brain cancer research grants. Stanley s childhood dream was to one day attend college, but that was not to be. As a result, Stan and Donna thought Stanley s Dream would be a perfect name for their foundation. It was their hope that Stanley s unfulfilled dream could become a reality for others. The first fundraiser was held in their back yard in August Since that time, Stanley s Dream Foundation has held numerous fundraisers (Gala s, annual Golf Tournaments and 5K Run/Walks) enabling the endowment fund to grow. It is Stan and Donna s hope that the endowment fund will grow large enough to sustain the awarding of college scholarships and research grants for many years to come. To date, Stanley s Dream Foundation has awarded 22 college scholarships to graduating seniors in Chester County School District, 7 childhood brain cancer research grants to The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia and 2 scholarship grants to the St. Paul s Baptist Church Scholarship Committee. Stanley s Dream Foundation has been chosen by Alex s Lemonade Foundation as one of their Hero Families and also featured on a channel 3 Eyewitness news Brotherly Love segment hosted by Ukee Washington. 6 The Reverend Dr. Wayne E. Croft, Sr. He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8 The Reverend Dr. Wayne E. Croft, Sr. serves as the Senior Pastor of the St. Paul s Baptist Church in West Chester, PA. He is also the founder of the Redeemer Renaissance Community Development Corporation. Through this CDC, Dr. Croft sought to renovate dilapidated homes for low-income families, provide homeowner seminars, revitalize the Point Breeze section of Philadelphia and challenge policies that affect the least fortunate. Dr. Croft is a socially conscious preacher who seeks to meet the needs of people and speak truth to power. Recently, he was appointed the faith leader for clergy in Philadelphia and Vicinity for the Affordable Care Act. Dr. Croft serves as a board member of the Chester County Opportunities Industrialization Center; a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free adult basic literacy education and life skills programs that prepare individuals for employment leading to economic self-sufficiency. He has spoken out against injustice from both the pulpit and public arena. He never aims to overthrow society but reform society in a way that reflects God's concern for fairness and righteousness. Dr. Croft is a life member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and has been inducted into the Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also a prolific writer. The African-American Pulpit Journal published his sermons; The Promise Guaranteed, A Candidate for the Hall of Faith and his article entitled What Does it Mean to Preach Biblically Today. He is a contributor to the book, From One Brother to Another: Voices of African-American Men, Volume II and author of the new release book Unexpected Calls to Unexpected Places. He has published two articles in the Past Master section of Preaching Magazine; John Jasper: Preaching with Authority and E. K. Bailey: Expositor of the Word. Dr. Croft serves as The Jeremiah A. Wright, Sr. Associate Professor of Homiletics and Liturgics in African American Studies at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. He challenges his students to remain faithful to the black preaching prophetic tradition he sees fading in many pulpits today. Dr. Croft has distinguished himself as not only a pastor but also a scholar having earned an Associate degree from Pinebrook Jr. College and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Trinity College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. He received the Master of Divinity degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary), Master of Theology degree from Princeton Theological Seminary where he wrote a thesis entitled The Black Church and Social Ministry, and graduated with distinction from Drew University earning a Doctor of Ministry degree. He also earned a Master of Philosophy and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. He is the first person to earn two doctoral degrees from Drew University. Dr. Croft seeks to follow in the footsteps of other prophetic preachers such as The Rev. Drs. Martin Luther King, Jr., Benjamin Elijah Mays, Samuel DeWitt Proctor, William Augustus Jones, Jr. and others. Dr. Croft is married to Dr. Lisa L. Croft, a family physician, and they have three children, Darlene, an attorney, Wayne Jr., a sophomore at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, and Candace Nicole a senior at Rancocas Valley Regional High School. EVANGELISM POINTS OF POWER January 2014 Dare to Hope in Jesus! A brand new year brings about a longing in many people for a better life: for things to finally turn around. The Bible shows us that, against all odds, Abraham and Sarah continued to hope in God, and they received the confirmation of God's revelation to them. The same was true of Job, David, Naomi, Ruth and many more. The audacity of hope teaches you that you can HAVE better, BE better, and DO better, because in God, ALL things are possible (Phil. 4:13)! Daring to hope in Christ Jesus will reveal His grace, His mercy, His favor, and His love for you. Just as you needed to hear a message on hope, someone else needs to hear it, too, and they won't if you don't share it. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) directs us to go out into the land, teach and make disciples. The Holy Spirit will put the power in your heart and the words in your mouth to do it! Believe, for it is so! Romans 15:13 says, Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. 12 Second Sunday after Epiphany January 19, 2014 My faith looks up to thee, my Father, my friend, my all. When you have searched everywhere and what you are looking for is not in sight. Mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers just keep on calling on Jesus and in some way or another, Jesus will come and he will answer your prayers, and always let your faith look up to God the author of our faith. 2 Looking unto Jesus the Author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2 Jesus is the example of faith and He proves it over and over. Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 Jesus is the answer in this world today, tomorrow and for evermore. Have faith in God and everything will fall into place as God has willed it so. How do I know, because the Bible tells us so. Please read your Bible. It It is in your Bible. The question is then asked what is faith? Faith is the assent of the mind to the truth of God s revealed will. There are two kinds of faith, 1) Historical. 2) Evangelical or saving faith, is an assent to the truth of revelation, and an entire trust and confidence in God s character, and Christ s teachings, with an unreserved surrender of the will. Jesus Christ is then received into the heart as the Saviour, Prophets, Priest, and King, to be loved and obeyed. This is instrumentally a means of salvation, an essential grace, and a mainspring of Christian life. Dear St. Paulians and Friends, Do you know that Jesus is the answer in this world today, the only answer? Do you know that prayer is the key to heaven, and faith unlocks the door? Do you know that everyone has a measure of faith? 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 1 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect; will of God. 3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. Romans 12:1-3 Hallelujah!
