Preparations for our annual Giving Tree and Fair Trade Sale are already underway! In all the hustle and bustle of this month, please take some time to remember those who have gone before us and pray for your dearly departed loved ones. 3 The Feast of Christ the King November 25, 2018 What does it mean to have a king? For most of us who were born and raised in a democratic country, living under the rule of a king or queen is unthinkable. Words like: oppression, loss of freedom, being a subject and having fewer rights might come to mind. Yet, according to The Freedom House Index that measures each country on a scale of based on how free their citizens actually are, rates the United States at only 86! Surprisingly, out of the 5 freest countries in the world are monarchies: Canada, The Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Deacon Tom Kubik and a dozen volunteers from Holy Name spent the day at Westville prison to provide an uplifting, prayerful retreat for nearly 100 inmates. Thank you to everyone who baked cookies and participated in the retreat. The men were deeply moved by your care and concern for them. Please continue to keep them in your prayers. Why do we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King? The official title of this feast day is Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. (Try to top that!) Pope Pius XI instituted the feast of Christ the King in 125, in response to growing global shift toward secularism. He saw that people were living more in accord with the rules of popular culture and society instead of living by Christ s law of love. Pope Pius also wrote an encyclical about the feast to help people understand what it means to have Christ as our King. What does it mean to have Christ as our King? Simply put, it means to give Jesus absolute rule over our lives. This means putting him in first place ahead of anything else you could possibly think of. Remember the WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) craze from the 10s? That s the basic idea - but first you have to know what Jesus would REALLY say or do. You have to know Jesus rules. This is where the rubber hits the road What are Jesus rules? Jesus definitely has rules and laws to live by. Sometimes we find them clearly spelled out in the Bible in passages like You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (MT 22:7-). Other times we find them contained in passages which require much more study and reflection to understand such as The Beatitudes, (MT 5:-12) and the Our Father prayer (MT 6:-1). Fortunately, the Church has a wealth of resources to help us learn and understand what Jesus asks of us. Plus, actively participating in Mass every week is one of the best ways to deepen our knowledge and love of Christ. Now comes the difficult part. So far, it all sounds rather easy: put Jesus first, know what Jesus asks of us, and live by it. That is, until someone wrongs us and we have to make a choice between saying/doing something, and turning the other cheek. Suddenly we hear the voices of the world saying Stand up for yourself! Don t let them get away with that! We feel the emotions of anger, fear, hurt, and sadness explode onto the scene. We search our storehouse of coping mechanisms to help us deal with the problem at hand. Then, we remember Jesus words love your enemies, offer no resistance to one who is evil and If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand (them) your cloak as well. (Matthew, ch. 5). Not so easy anymore. Popular opinion is almost always at odds with the Gospel and you will most likely be seen as a fool for choosing the way of Jesus. Tough choices. The Kingdom is at hand The good news is that Jesus promises to be with us in our struggles. He understands what it s like to be human and to be pressured by the world around us. We can come to the Sacrament of Reconciliation to give us a fresh start when things didn t go as we hoped and we can receive Jesus own Body and Blood in the Eucharist to give us the strength and courage we need to choose him over the world. Little by little, we discover that, whenever we choose Christ as our King and do as he asks, we are already living in the Kingdom of God here on earth. 4 The weekend of November 17 & 18 the Peace and Social Justice Commission will be hosting its annual Christmas Fair Trade Event Organic Tea, Coffee and Chocolate will be available for purchase after all the Masses. New this year are hand woven straw baskets made by women who supplement their farming income by making lovely straw items. Working with Catholic Relief Services, small scale farmers are able to support their families, stay on their land, and improve their communities. Most Fair Trade products are organic. This means coffee farmers are restoring and preserving the planet: improving the soil and keeping toxic pesticides out of the water. Domestic manufacturers buy fair trade coffee, cocoa beans and sugar and produce all food products in the USA. Please help support this important ministry. The Joy of Advent It is important to reflect on hope during this season of Advent, when we prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas. In our times, which seem so dark, the Pope said we often feel lost in the face of the wickedness and the violence that surround us. We may even feel discouraged, because we feel powerless, and it seems the darkness might never end. But we should never give up hope, he continued, because God, with His love, journeys with us, He does not leave us alone, and the Lord Jesus has overcome evil, and opened up the path of life. Let us allow ourselves, then, Pope Francis encourages, to teach hope, to faithfully await the coming of the Lord, and whatever desert we might have in our life will become a flowering garden. Prayer for Advent O Lord of Light, fill the night. Many have lost their way. O Rising Dawn, shine upon us and darkness will be no more O Comforter, rescue us. Destroy our sinfulness. O Counselor, mighty Lord, teach us what we must know. O King of Kings, love you bring. The world is made anew. O Prince of Peace, make us free, Grant justice for humankind. Emmanuel, Emmanuel, promised so long ago. Emmanuel, Emmanuel, God is with us at last. 5 1st Annual Giving Tree Event The 1st Annual St. Vincent de Paul Giving Tree Event begins on Saturday, November 2th Tags will be available on the Christmas Tree in the church lobby that weekend. HOW TO PARTICIPATE: 1) TAKE A TAG (or several) from the Christmas tree in the lobby. Purchase the item(s) listed on the tag. 2) Bring your WRAPPED GIFTS with the TAGS ON THEM back to church no later than: Sunday, December th Donations of non-perishable food items are also being collected. Monetary donations are welcome. VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO NEEDED Sunday, December 16th beginning at 8:0am to sort, pack, wrap and deliver food and gifts. 6 Please pray for the faithful departed who have been buried from our parish community since November 2, 2017 November is the month in which we remember our loved ones who have gone before us. The Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) shrines in the back of church hold the images and symbols of our deceased loved ones in a special way. There is also a special book on display in the back of church during the month of November. You are invited to write the names of your deceased loved ones whom you would like to remember in prayer. Yet we live in a culture that often fails to recognize death as an integral part of life. Saint Francis knew that the journey to our true home with God could only be made with Sister Death as a companion. Francis invites us to embrace rather than battle Sister Death, to love not to despise Sister Death, to welcome not to shun Sister Death. 7
