1 FUMC Newsletter The Gospel According To June 2016 This summer is going to be full of faith, truth, and pixie dust as we look at some of the best movies Disney has to offer. We will be finding the gospel truth in Disney movies and using them as teachable moments so we can share the gospel with our children, grandchildren, and friends. Walt Disney company has been a part of the spiritual, emotional, and ethical development of generations of young adults. So wear your favorite Disney shirt, costume or mickey ears, and come expecting to hear the gospel through the eyes of Disney and then take that good news with you as you watch the Disney movie with friends and share Christ with them in a non threatening way. You will be amazed at how much good news there is in these movies! Whether you are 4 or 94, join us for a look at the Gospel message in a brand new way, through the images and music of Disney. HERE IS OUR SUMMER LINE UP! June 12 Finding Nemo Luke 15: 4-7, Romans 3:23, Phil 2:3 Nemo, knowing his father loved him so very much inspired him to make the right choice so he and his dad could be reunited. Dory was a fish who knew Nemo s father, and led little Nemo to him. There was so much happiness when Nemo was at last saved and home with his loving father. Jesus told a story that was just like the story of Nemo: Luke 15:4-7 (NLT)4 If you had one hundred sheep, and one of them strayed away and was lost in the wilderness, wouldn t you leave the ninety-nine others to go and search for the lost one until you found it? 2 Gospel according June 19 The Lion King Scriptures: Genesis 49:9-10, 1 Peter 5:8 & Rev. 5:5 Do you invest in kids? Has God placed kids in your life? Then be sure to help shape their God-given identity. How about that inner Scar that you struggle with? It leads to pain and destruction. And it calls you away from who you are created to be. Stop forgetting! Remember who you are! You are a child of the One True God! You are a child of the Eternal King! And no matter what you are walking through right now, know that it will not be that way forever. In the end, the Lion King wins! 1) God forgive me for how we have walked away 2) I want to be your child 3) Use me, I offer my life to you. June 26 Cinderella Matt 25: 1-13 Are you prepared. Here we have two stories where the toll of midnight make a difference. Are you prepared when the clock tolls. Be prepared, wise and ready. It seems all hope is lost but Cinderella is prepared, Cinderella is wise and Cinderella is ready and pulls out the missing slipper. It is a perfect fit. The slippers are like the bridegroom trying to borrow oil. Some things in life cannot be borrowed. You and I cannot live on someone else s oil. We can help one another in so many ways, but at some point we are on our own. July 3 Jungle Book July 10 Peter Pan Acts 6: Simon Peter s shadow and Peter Pans Shadow have a lot in common. Peter Pan s shadow influenced the whole Darling family and the apostle Peter s shadow influenced the whole church. Peter Pan makes such a racket trying to catch his shadow that he wakes Wendy up. Wendy tries her best to help Peter out by sewing the shadow back on the soles of Peter s shoes. In the Bible there is another Peter who has a very famous shadow that makes a big ruckus. When the apostle Peter would walk by, people would put the sick and the infirmed by the road so his shadow would fall upon their loved ones and many were cured. We all affect people in so many ways. We can cast a shadow of good positive effects. I like to think that the light of Christ in us allows us to reflect the shadow of Christ upon other peoples lives. Allowing the light of Christ to cast a shadow so we can influence the world for God. July 17 Star Wars July 24 Tangled (Gospel According to Disney Continued on next page)

3 Gospel According to Disney Continued. July 31 Aladdin Has not God chosen those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?" (James 2:5) In the Disney version of Aladdin, we first meet the main character running from the authorities after having stolen a loaf of bread. Aladdin, the street kid, has no parents, no education, no money, no job, and no opportunities in life. But he's got ambition. And he's got a dream. And before the end of the story that street kid is going to be the prince of the kingdom. Aug 7 Pirates of the Caribbean Aug 14 Beauty and the Beast Acts 9:1-22 Everyone loves a good before-and-after story. Beast s monstrous exterior was a reflection of the cruelty in his heart, but he was made human again by experiencing Belle s love. Saul of Tarsus was a beastly figure transformed into a saint by the love of Christ, and the Holy Spirit still works in us today to soften our hearts and help us embody the love of Christ in a hurting world. Aug 21 Frozen So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. (1 John 4:16 21) If Christianity is about salvation, and salvation is about correcting Sin, and Christ s sacrifice does exactly that, the Gospel story is a perfect mirror to this story. We each have power, like Elsa. It is within us, and perfect. We need to find out what it is, not for ourselves, but so we can share it to the world. The enemy to that actualization is fear. Faith then is the remedy. We need to believe, as Jesus teaches us and shows us through his own act of sacrificial love, that God is in control, loves us, has created us each with the purpose to love, to share the gifts he gave us to the perfecting goodness of the world, not to our perspective, but to the creator s perfect perspective, complete, whole, eternal, and true. Jesus did turn water into wine. And tax collectors into saints. And fishermen into prophets. Our God is in the business of transformation. Our God is in the business of breaking curses. And it is not at all beyond the realm of imagination that he could turn even a beast back into a man. Aug 28 The Master s Story Teller Wesley Putnam, like Walt Disney can retail a story and make it come to life. Wesley will be retelling great truths in the Bible through Drama and music! Come and hear the Gospel come alive this Sunday and every night Sunday through Wednesday.

4 ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES Looking for a place to study Gods word? Here is a brief description of our Sunday school classes: Agape Room 107 A class for adults of all ages, married or single. Lecture format using biblical texts for study. Worship, singing and special projects are also parts of this class. Faith/Messengers Room 110 Bible study discussion led by class members who take volunteer turns in leadership. Primarily men and women over 60, this class also participates in meeting special church needs as they arise. Friendship Room 106 A diverse class of both married and widowed women. Studies the quarterly Adult Bible Study series through both lecture and discussion. Supports church activities with funds and service. Hallelujah Room 105 For mentally challenged adults. Reading and discussing Bible stories, snacks, fellowship and singing are all parts of this class. Love Out Loud (LOL)/Nomads Room 125 A discussion class for adults that look at how one s behaviors and expectations are shaped by God s word from a practical perspective. An emphasis on supporting service to one s community in various ways is a natural extension of this group s core beliefs. Keeping Holy Time Room 128 A discussion Bible study that takes a systematic approach to Scripture either by studying the weekly passages of the Revised Common Lectionary, or various DVD driven short term studies. Men s Bible Class Room 109 Men s lecture and discussion utilizing DVD s. Primarily seniors, but welcome men of any age. Each week s class opens with gospel hymn singing accompanied on the piano. Meets in the Library. Questers Room 102 Most class members are boomer adults in middle age with grown children. Teachers rotate in leading Bible study discussions in which all are encouraged to participate. The class has a number of service projects and social gatherings through the year. Seekers Room 127 A discussion class for contemporary couples and singles, primarily ages Bible study and life application come together as the class seeks to grow in faith and to develop and nurture relationships. Service and fellowship are also parts of the Seekers community. New Hope Room 101 Primarily single women, but all are welcome/. An investigative study of biblical books and topics in discussion format.

5 Exodus Bible Study Starting June 6 at 6pm, Lisa Mayhugh will be leading a new Bible Study on the book of Exodus in the Chapel. Join us as we see the grace of God extended with an outstretched arm as He leads His people, and us, through the wilderness. This is a ten week study. Look for the sign-ups at the Adult Ministry table and be sure to take a study with you. You will need to do the first lesson before June 6th. FOURTEEN $1,000 SCHOLARSHIPS W O W! And also to be able to renew scholarships for the 2016 scholarship recipients who are eligible. We have a year now to replenish the FUMC scholarship funds. 6 Youth Ministry: FUSION Wednesday 6pm-8pm 6pm Dinner, Fellowship and Games 7pm Worship and Small Groups Fusion is still going strong and we are looking forward to what God has in store for the youth at Alvin FUMC. We have so many possibilities of ministry in store for us as we look ahead to the summer. Two events that are both incredible experiences for youth to serve are UMArmy and Big House. Big House June $ by May 29th Conroe, Texas ( BIG HOUSE is an acronym which stands for Believing in God, Helping Others Understand through Service Everywhere. We want to give opportunities for youth to come together and grow in their Christian experience, through all aspects of our mission trip, whether it be on the work site, or in fellowship with one another. UMArmy July $ due by July 17th Lake Charles, Louisiana ( UMArmy This is a week long High School Mission trip where we get to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate in the community. 8 VBS Kids Will Prepare MANNA BAGS in June and they will need us to help bring their supplies. Last year they did 250 MANNA BAGS! WOW! So, we re going to need LOTS of meats, sweet & salty treats, fruit cups, water, & juice items to fill those Bags. VBS SUBMERGED will be June So, please bring in everything you can from now until Sunday, June 5, and put it in the COLLECTION BINS in the hallways. After we eat our fill of Ice Cream and play a few games we will head into the Sanctuary for an Old Fashioned Hymn Sing.
