Vicar s Message Dearly Beloved in Christ, As a parish the coming months are full of various events and celebrations. Annual convention, Harvest Festival, Sangha Varam, VBS, Family Dedication Day, Sunday School Day, Inter Prayer Group Competitions, Musical Evening, Carol Service and Christmas all fall under this quarter. The Annual Parish Convention is scheduled from 28 th September to 1 st October. Rev. K. Thomas, a renowned preacher and counselor will be the leader for this year s Convention. The evening sessions of the convention will held befrom 28 th 30 th September and the final session will be held after the Holy Communion service on 01 st October. There will be special sessions for Senior Citizens and Family Fellowship members at the church from 10 a.m. to p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. at the Church on Saturday, 30 th September respectively. I urge all my parishioners to kindly make yourselves available and to prayerfully attend all the sessions of the convention with your family and friends. NBMP Men s Voice will give leadership for singing sessions during the convention. 05 th November will be observed as Family Dedication Sunday. We live in a world that moves at a whirlwind pace distracting the family existence. We find ourselves engulfed in a barrage of images and ideas from TV, internet, ads and hypes that fails us to devote any time to our family or to our relationship with Jesus. Thus the age old institution of family faces new challenges and pressures. If we depend on our own efforts, it is impossible to withstand the challenges. But if we depend more on the grace of God this is possible. I request all the members to bring their familyalong to the dedication service and attend the Holy Communion as a family. November first Sunday will be observed as Sunday School Day. I request all the parents to take special and extra effort to make their children available for the Sunday School classes regularly. I appreciate the Sunday School Headmaster and teachers deeply for their sincere conviction and zeal in nurturing Christian education in the little hearts. We are a community which is immensely blessed by God through the Mar Thoma Church. Hence no one is expected to be passive onlookers in the house of God but all have to be active participants in the life of the parish. Let me remind you an episode in Jesus earthly ministry mentioned in Luke 17: Here we read that 10 lepers were healed by Jesus. But only one came back to say thank you to Jesus. Jesus asked this poor leper: Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?. It s a witness of gratitude from a condemned man who was brought from death to life. Today Jesus is asking us the same question! What will be our answer? Are we really thankful to God for the manifold blessings we received from Him?. Do we have a time schedule for church activities? I urge you all to set apart some time from your busy schedule to say thank you to God. Yours in Christ s love, Eapen Abraham achen 2 Shalom, October-December 2017

From The Desk Of Chief Editor I request each and every parish member to read this issue of Shalom for only one reason... to read about the Mulund Bhejgaon Youth Camp organised by our youths. You will be moved by the testimonies of the youth of Bhejgaon. For many of them it was a first visit to this maximum city, the city of their dreams, Mumbai. Despite being awestruck by the sights the city offered, they were moved by the Holy Spirit to seek God and honour Him during the camp. Imagine if it were our children who would have been the ones to reap the benefits of such a camp. But nay, we push them to coaching classes, sports, dance, and all other activities that were to make them smart to live successfully in this world while we would even forgive them for not wanting to attend Sunday School. The choice is for you to make, whether you want your children to be street smart or God smart. That is why an activity like the Youth camp deserves all its praise for that s what God wants us as a church to do to bring more souls to Christ, to evangelise about the Holy God to those who are unaware about him. Praise God for the youth who have taken the role of evangelists with such sincerity. This issue of Shalom also has a questionnaire to survey the spiritual health of a child. I appeal to all parents to encourage their children to respond to this survey positively as it would eventually help them to assess and analyse their child with a Christian perspective. We have also included an article concerning a child s exposure to modern day technology, that is meant to encourage both children and parents to recognize the pitfalls of excessive indulgence of gadgets and offers suggestions to minimise its ill effects. I thank Rev. Mathews George, Youth Chaplain, Mumbai for his simple message for the youth of today on shaping oneself according to the Word The next three months are momentous with major events like the Parish Day, Annual Convention and V.B.S. that promote the truth about God s love and care for us. Another Christmas is round the corner. The birth of Christ brought great joy to the world and salvation to all of us. I pray that each one of us will receive the joy and peace throughout the coming year and our needs will be met through prayer in faith. As we come to the end of yet another year let us remember not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present our requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. May the peace and blessings of Christmas be yours and the coming year be filled with happiness and contentment. With warm regards, Mathew Samuel Shalom, October-December

Jokes At a local Burger King an elderly couple came in and ordered one burger, one order of fries and one coke with two glasses. When they got to their booth, the man placed a napkin in front of himself and one in front of his wife, then proceeded to divide the fries, cut the burger in half and divided the coke equally. A gentleman nearby noticed and offered to buy them another burger, fries and Coke. The woman then said, "No you don't understand. We've been married over 50 years and all our life we agreed to split everything right down the middle." Her husband then began eating, as she sat with her hands in her lap. The gentleman nearby noticed and asked the lady why she wasn't eating. She replied, "As I said before, we split everything right down the middle, and it's his day to use the teeth first." 28 Youth Week theme Life focussed on the Word. Shaper of you: Thank you soooo much! You re the best!! I love you! she said with a cheeky grin. But he noticed that her eyes were moist. He had taken her to the police station after her purse and mobile were stolen. It was almost 9 pm when they got back to her hostel. And she was thankful. After waving bye, she slowly walked back up the stairs to her room. You re the best!! I love you He replayed those words on the way home. Did she really?? It caused him much turmoil that night, plus a lack of sleep. And it happened again. And again. Did she really mean it? Her eyes were indeed moist. The next morning, feelings had emerged like the rays of the morning sun. He found himself tongue tied. He wanted to talk more about her words that night, which were robbing his sleep, daily. And to his irritation, she didn t seem to reciprocate what he was feeling. She seemed normal and smiled when he purposely bumped into her at the office water cooler. How are you? she asked and went off, after hearing his fine. He became disappointed. Anger brewed quickly like the coffee in the machine beside him. Now he wondered why she said those words if she didn t mean it. Or did she? Words are powerful. Perhaps you have had an experience similar to the above story. If not, you may have countless experiences in which what someone said evoked powerful emotions inside you - anger, sadness, disappointment, disbelief, love, laughter and what not! Words are able to orient lives. A good part of our lives are shaped by words. Stories, songs, Sunday school, textbooks, notebooks, applications, resumes, advertisements, movie dialogues, series, YouTubers, Standup comedy you name it. People fall in and out of relationships through words. Agreements are made in words. Instructions are printed in words. Why, even your name is a word and it takes your place, wherever it is recorded. Words shape lives. John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and lived among us. Capitalising the W was not an editing error. In the Greek original of John s Gospel, the word for The Word is Ho Logos. Greek? Jump with me into an imaginary time machine! There! We ve rewinded a couple of thousand years backwards and have reached Ancient Greece, the land of Olympics, Spartans, Alexander the great, Aristotle, Plato and Socrates (not to forget the setting of the movie 26 Shalom, October-December 2017

Three Hundred!). The Greeks were also famous for their philosophical brilliance. They believed in a Divine Reason that gave order, form and meaning to everything in the universe. They called this divine reason The Logos (the Word). Just as English education and language is powerful and popular around the world, so was Greek language and philosophy during Jesus time. Although Romans were the rulers at the time, the hangover of centuries of Greek rule before that lay heavy in the hearts and minds of people. That is when John understood how to introduce Jesus to a world that s steeped in Greek culture. John introduces Jesus as the Logos or the Word - the divine principle that gives order, form and meaning to the universe (note the repeated references to the Word in John 1:1-17!) And how true an analogy! Life without the creator is on our terms. Do you trust yourself? Even friends don t take us seriously on our terms do they? Jesus the Word is the way, the truth and the life. A life focussed on the Word is a life that is oriented, shaped by the Word - Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. A life focussed on the Word is what makes our life meaningful, impactful and a blessing. Why so? Because Jesus Christ lived and showed us who we are meant to be. He displayed what a blessing we are capable of becoming. He opened the way to eternal life. In a world where potent words that can make or break lives float all around us, may the Word shape us. As neuroscience clearly states today, you become what you spend your time with. Ed Sheeran s smash hit, Shape Of You has been everywhere for a while now. Perhaps, it s time to think, who is the shaper of you. What s shaping you? What are you shaping the world around you into? (Rev. Mathews George Youth Chaplain, Mumbai The Game Changer Project) Shalom, October-December

Childrens Corner Technology s Trespass! I am not a psychiatrist, psychologist or counselor. The points I have mentioned in this article come from my experience as a Sunday School teacher and parent. What I have written about, though in a very general sense, impacts our children and youth in some way or other. Parents need to know and understand the challenges our children and youth face. This is a vast subject and I have just put down what I could think of and relate to. Parents, and teachers too, find it difficult to fathom why our children act the way they do sometimes. We don t understand why children always need to do two things at the same time, why they lose interest in something so fast, why they don t understand the value of things, to mention just a few things. In the same way, our children look askance at some of our reactions and they inevitably come to the conclusion that their parents and teachers belong to the Stone age. What we fail to understand is that our children are born and brought up in a different milieu altogether than the one we grew up in. Some of us did not see a TV till we were in school or even college; computers came much later while smartphones are a comparatively new phenomenon. Most of our children and youth have seen these devices from the time they were born. So, these devices are nothing new to them - it comes with the territory. We were not exposed to the different media that they are exposed to now. We only had newspapers, books and magazines, sports we watched at grounds and movies and drama in theatres. But today technology has trespassed into all areas; it has invaded every aspect of our lives and brought everything right into our homes. The outlook of children and youth seem to have changed with the changing times,as a result of being exposed to content we could not even dream of accessing. In general, they are more confident using technology in all spheres of life, be it for education, professionally and also for entertainment. Technology is changing so fast and newer goodies are being advertised daily which make our children crave for new things leaving the marketers laughing all the way to the bank. In spite of all the technological advances, the improved quality of life and increased opportunities, the world has not become an easier place to live in, but only a more complicated and competitive one. Some of the challenges our children face are: Stress resulting from compe-tition and increased expectations both of themselves and from their parents. Today, the sky is the limit 28 Shalom, October-December 2017

and parents push their children relentlessly. They put their children in the best schools and tuition classes and expect, nay demand, that their children excel considering the expensive education they have been given. Be sensitive to any change in the behavior of your child and talk to them before they sink into depression or have anxiety issues. The excessive importance given to studies and career, giving children and youth very little time for church and Christian activities. After this, children don t feel the need to be close to their church or follow Christ implicitly. It is then that parents realize the foolishness of their earlier endeavours. They forget what the Bible says in Proverbs 22:6: Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Peer pressure cannot be underestimated. It forces our children to conform to the majority opinion and forces them to do their best so that they can be accepted as part of the gang. Pressure builds up within them to have the same things their friends possess, like smartphones, go to the places where they holiday at, match the marks they get; in short they don t want to be perceived as any less than any of their friends. Internet usage of our children is increasing by leaps and bounds and cuts across all spheres of online activity. o They chat and share photos and videos in different social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. o Online gaming also takes a lot of their time. There are some very addictive games, ranging from games like Angry Birds and Temple Run to the very destructive ones like the Blue Whale game which drives children to suicide. Such is man s depravity today and our children can be exposed to it. o The amount of media offerings available to the children is incalculable. Innumerable TV channels offer a mix of news, entertainment, edutainment, sports, etc., website channels like Hotstar, Netflix and Amazon offer unlimited movies, shows, sports, etc., so that 24 hours in a day is not enough to watch all these programmes or play games on your SMART TV, computer or smartphone. The list is unending and this has led to many worrying and harmful consequences: Some children and youth retreat into a virtual world as they spend more time online and less time with friends and for healthy pursuits like sports. This may cause relationship issues later as they find it difficult to relate to other people. Short attention span switching channels, multitasking - they don t know how to just sit back and relax. They always need to do something, and after their studies, they inevitably go back Shalom, October-December

to their smartphone, TV or computer. Multi-tasking They need to get the best of everything and there is not enough time in a day to do all of it, so they do two or even three tasks at a time. Children have lost the habit of reading, other than for their studies. They have lost the habit of sitting back, relaxing and just observing things going on around them which would help them when they have to face the world on their own. They lack general knowledge and awareness of current affairs. Another worrying aspect of being online is the effect of viruses and malware on our devices. Some of these harmful programs destroy our data but some others are equally harmful because they steal our data, sometimes even our personal data. Our children could be at risk and, maybe this statement is far out, so please avoid, as much as possible, putting the pictures and other personal information of our children and family on social media. You don t know who is watching your social media activity! Some Suggested Do s and Don ts Do s 1. Be a friend to your child and try to understand their point of view. This will reduce the pressure on them to succeed at any cost, and consequently lessen their stress. 2. Recognize that change is necessary and encourage them to do what they like and want to excel in. 3. Be their guide. Don t expect your children to think and behave in the same way that you do. You should take into account that they are but children and they will behave as children, not having the knowledge and experience that we have gained over the years. 4. Keep a track of the websites they visit. It is not that you mistrust them, but it is only for their own good so that you can advise them which sites to visit and which not to. 5. Recognize the danger signals from your child. Watch out for tell-tale signs of disinterest, bursts of anger and a tendency to be alone. Pray and take counsel from the right people and, of course, step in with sensitivity and love. 6. Encourage and give paramount importance to their spiritual life or you will lose them later on in life. 7. Ensure that there is a limit as to the time they use their phone, computer or TV. Otherwise, the children could be exposed to: 30 Shalom, October-December 2017

o o o o Internet addiction Objectionable content of all kinds that are floating around on the Internet Negative effects on physical and mental health, neurological development and personal relationships A lack of creativity as they have less time to think 8. Advise your children not to use their smartphones while walking on the roads or pavements. A loss in concentration may prove to be costly. 9. Increase family interactions. Some examples of this are of the family having their meals together and also getting together for family prayer. This will give all the family members an opportunity to share and sort out issues at the table itself. Don ts 1. Don t introduce your children at too early an age to these devices, before they understand their purpose. 2. Don t post pictures of your family and children online as well as personal information. It is not advisable. 3. Don t allow your children to keep the doors of their room closed. They need to understand the principle that whatever they do in private should stand the test of transparency. Roy Samuel, Mulund West Prayer Group questioinnaire for Sunday School Children (Junior * Inters * Seniors * Young Adults) In an increasingly busy, hyperconnected world, where there is so much out there fighting for the time and attention of children, teens and young adults, the challenges a Sunday School faces are many faceted. Heavy study workloads, easy access to riveting entertainment, overload of information are seemingly making it an unequal battle for their hearts and minds. But, if anything, more than ever, there s a need to offer a persuasive perspective of the Christian view of life here and in the hereafter. Because if our homes, churches and Sunday Schools will not offer them reasons to draw unto Jesus, who else will? Schools?Colleges?Workplaces? Here s a simple exercise to see life the way they experience it and discover pointers to ways of re-engaging with these young and fertile minds. There are three sections that cover a student s take on Sunday School, technology and daily life. Shalom, October-December

Mission News Mulund-Bhejgaon Combined Youth Camp - A milestone in our mission journey Since 2012, the villages of Bhejgaon and Yejgaon have been a constant prayer point for the NBMP church. Over the years, the trips to Bhejgaon for visits, VBS and youth camps conveyed to us the growth of the believers there and to them of our commitment to partner with them for the Lord s work. The Mulund-Bhejgaon Combined Youth Camp from 25th to 27th August 2017 was taking a step ahead. Arranging the camp for the Bhejgaon youths in Mumbai gave a larger number of Mulund youths and parishioners to fellowship with them over a period of 2 days. The interaction enabled everyone to reflect on the fact that the church truly was one body in Christ. It also reminded us of the road ahead for this growing mission, of shared responsibilities, of togetherness and love. We were blessed with God s abundant grace and provision throughout the camp. The plan for the trip was to take them around the city on the first day, have the camp sessions and activities on the second day, and worship at NBMP church on the third day. Despite the rains, neither the camp schedule nor the return journey of the Bhejgaon team was affected. Friday, August 25, 2017 On a very rainy Aug 25 morning, finallya team of 30 adults and two infants reached CST, including Pradeep and Shini David, and Gangaram and Rekha Pawar. After stopping by at the Wilson College boy s hostelfor freshening up and breakfast (graciously arranged by the college authorities), we took them on a tour of thegateway of India, Marine Drive, Taraporewalla Aquarium, Malabar s Hanging Garden, and the Nehru Science Centre. Interestingly, for nearly everyone from Bhejgaon, this was their first view of the seaever.so, the route to the camp site, St. Pius Bio Medical Ethics Centre, Goregaon via the Worli -Bandra sealink was an added bonus. 34 Shalom, October-December 2017

Later that evening, a bhajan style worship by the Bhejgaon youth and a devotion led by Pradeepbrought the day to an end. Saturday, August 26, 2017 The Mulund team (25 in all) joined the Bhejgaon youths by 8.30 amready to get the camp off to a bright start with icebreakers and singing, and later group discussions, theme activities and games.after the inaugural message by EapenAbraham Achen and welcome address by the Mr. John Varughese (Parish Secretary),the main speaker BlessenVarughese, Thane Mission Co-ordinator, took over.he conveyed the message of the theme (Run with Endurance, looking to Jesus-Heb 12:1) bi-lingually - in Marathi and English. Communicating in Marathi/Hindi, the Mulund teamworkedat wholehearted participation from both sides.the day ended with testimonies. Sunday, August 27, 2017 For only the 2nd time(the first was in 2012), the church had the opportunity to conduct Holy Communion service in Marathi. Instead of our local prayer group, members of the Bhejgaon community were invited to assist in every aspect of the service - opening songs (bhajans), lesson readings,in the altar, sermon (EvgGangaram), prayer (Rekha), and the Kiss of Peace. The choir led the songs well throughout the service in Marathi and Hindi, setting the tone for a moving time of worship. Enabled by the Holy Spirit,EapenAchen, in a language alien to him, celebrated the Qurbana servicein Marathi (using the Diocesan approved Malayalam transliterated version of the Marathi liturgy). After the service ended with a brief report by Pradeep and testimonies by Bhejgaon youths, Blessen concluded the camp with the final Main Talk.Even as they left for CST, we knew the Lord had achieved far more than what we d set out to do. A special thanks to Pradeep David and Shinifor their counsel and help in planning and executing the camp. Thanks to Evg. GangaramPawar and Rekha for nurturing these youths through over the last 5 years. Shalom, October-December

Testimonies of youth from Bhejgaon who attended the B&M Youth camp Monit Bhaskar Goradwar I never expected this opportunity to see Mumbai. I thank God for His grace that I could see a lot of places in Mumbai and see nice gardens also. But there were a lot more things for me to learn as I reached the camp site. I had great fellowship with our friends there. The worship there was Spirit filled and I felt Christ Himself talking to me. learned what I should do to live a blessed life During these days I learned how to deal with older people. I also understood that God takes care of us and fills us with His Testimony by Mulund youths Aaron Thomas, Ranjita Biju presence when we live according to His will, follow Him, meditate on his Word and keep His Word in our hearts. I removed all the bad thoughts from my mind there and repented of the wrongs I had done so far. God transformed me through this camp. There is love, respect and gratitude in my heart for the Lord now. I felt like staying back there, worshipping and praying. I want to tell my friends, my neighbors and other people about what Jesus has done for me and tell that Jesus is the only One who has died for our sins and who gives us new life. Mayuri Goradwar I thank God for enabling Mulund Parish to arrange this youth camp at Mumbai because of which I was able to see Mumbai. Our train travel was nice and safe. At the camp site I was able to meet our brothers and sisters in Mumbai and get to know them. We were able to learn new songs and there was so much power in those songs that I could feel the Holy Spirit descend upon us and fill us. Action songs were taught and I loved dancing on those songs. I learnt the importance of giving the first place to God in life so that we can be blessed in life. I could get to know God better. We were taught the importance of fearing God, to live honoring God, give time to Him, obey God s commands, pray wherever we go and mediate on the Word of God. I praise God for the wonderful message which enriched me and touched my heart. I also learned to depend on God rather than trust my own strength and knowledge. Praise God. 36 Shalom, October-December 2017

Devidas Mohurle First of all, I praise God for the opportunity to see a city like Mumbai. When we started our journey from Bhejgaon, I wondered.was I just going to see Mumbai? Then I prayed to the Lord to help me concentrate on God and godly things. During our travel we had no problems at all by His grace. We were welcomed with heavy rains in Mumbai. I was happy as we entered Mumbai. Looking Testimony on Sunday after service by Manoj Pipre (in the chair) and Gurudas Wadai. around, I could see everyone else was equally excited. The first day waswonderful.we went around Mumbai, saw the sea, the Gateway of India, Taj Hotel, Mantralaya, the Asiatic Library and many other places. We also had the opportunity to travel by the Sea link road. As it was raining heavily, the sea was rough. It was such a great joy to see. On day two, I got up early, prayed and read the Word of God. Our brothers and sisters in Mumbai taught us new songs. Blessen Sir taught us on the life of Saul from chapters 1Samuel How God raised him to be a king, how he sinned against God, among other things. Our friends in Mumbai taught us a lot of good lessons through games and activities. It gave me a better understanding about God, and the measure of my faith in Him. It was a time of introspection for me. On the 3 rd day we leftfor Mulund Church. At the church, we had a blessed bhajan program along with a blessed worship service. We were glad that we could see the church and attend the Holy Communion. I was personally very blessed by this camp. Studying the Word of God was an enriching experience. I didn t want to leave the camp site. I want to thank God and the Mulund Mar Thoma church for arranging this program. Akash Bhoir I praise God for reminding me to Run the race looking unto Jesus through this camp. It enabled me to look back in to my life. As we reached Mumbai, everything looked very new and sitting in the bus we just kept looking all around. Sony dada helped us understand the places by explaining everything. We just loved it all. Shalom, October-December

Testimony by Bhejgaon youths (from L to R) Aakash Bhoir, Priyanka Aliwaar, Tripat Goradwar During these three days we were able to study the Word of God from 1 st Samuel 9 to 14 chapter. Blessen Sir taught us about the life of Saul. I could experience the love and mercy of God through the meditation of the Word of God. I also loved the new songs and action songs. There was so much to learn from the games too. I was so immersed in the group prayer and meditation I forgot all my pains and burdens of life. We visited the Mulund church and participated in the Holy Communion. It was nice to hear from many of our brothers and sisters how the Lord transformed their lives. We, as the youth of Bhejgaon, drew closer to God through this camp. I thank God for the Mulund church which took all the effort to bring us to Mumbai. Dhanraj Kumre I praise God for giving me an opportunity to see Mumbai. It was a nice experience to see different places. I just loved being there. Being at the camp site was an enriching experience as I saw and realized the new life and the work of the Holy Spirit there. The testimonies of others made me to realize that the Lord is at work in me. I got a new direction in my life by attending this camp. My faith in God got stronger and I want to walk with the Lord and be with the Lord. I also realized the need of giving first place to God in my life. It was wonderful to see how united the youth there were and how they worked together. I pray that the Lord would enable me to implement whatever I have learned through the camp. Praise God. Meena I never thought I would ever see Mumbai in my life. It s only because I knew Jesus I had this opportunity. 38 Shalom, October-December 2017

As I was listening to the Word during the camp, I could feel it was the living Word flowing there. I did not want to leave that place. I usually think of the Lord only when I go through bad times but here I realized that I was wrong and in all situation I should give God the first place in everything. I praise God that He chose me and gave me these three marvelous days. Gangaram Pawar I praise God for the youth camp organized by the Mulund Parish for the Bhejgaon youth from 25 th - 27 th August. I thank the Mulund Parish Achen and leaders of the Church for this effort. I am grateful that the youth of Bhejgaonwere able to see new places in Mumbai. The arrangement of accommodation and food was awesome. I praise God for a parish like Mulund which prays, co-operates, carries others burdens and cares for others. I believe that this is the inspiration of God. I praise God for Blessen Sir for the teaching given on the theme. Through the sharing of the Word the youth were drawn closer to God. Through the discussion in groups and through group prayers the children learnt a lot of things. God took these youngsters to Mumbai with a special purpose. His call is for everyone.every youth who attended this youth camp came back with a new life. I hope and pray that every youth who attended this meeting are called by God. The youth of our church are the pillars of the church. The youth should be built up carefully. I am seeing that change happening. I have decided that hence forth youth meetings will be arranged at least twice a month. I thank you all for taking extra efforts for making this program a successful one. We will continue to pray for all of you. (Translated from Marathi by Pradeep David) Shalom, October-December
