Principal How do I participate in spreading and growing the Kingdom of God? NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR This past week Holy Spirit School finished its last classes for the year. Now we get the campus ready for summer school and Vacation Bible School (VBS). It is always such fun with VBS to have all those little kids having a blast while they learn about their faith. The children have so much energy, I would love to bottle it and sell it. It is the last hurrah before the summer break. Ahead of time I want to thank so many VBS volunteers and our staff who work so hard to make that a reality. Thank you for your passion and commitment. Also this past week, we said farewell to some staff and faculty and I just want to acknowledge all their hard work and dedication over the years. Some of them for a short number of years and others for a long number of years of distinguished service. It is always hard to highlight one or two over others but there is a need to recognize and acknowledge some in a special way. Firstly, Fr. Angelo will have his last weekend of Masses on June 16th-17th and will say goodbye for the last time at all Masses. I want to personally thank him publicly for his ministerial priesthood and the gift of his compassion for so many. Fr. Angelo has grown so much with us and I am deeply grateful that he opened his heart and soul to our community. So many of you have told me how much you love him and will miss him. I want to acknowledge his dedication to the young and old alike and his consistent willingness to do whatever is necessary to help parishioners who come to him in need. The youth group will especially miss him. Thank you. Secondly, I want to acknowledge and thank Monica Bayless. Monica has been on staff for over 22 years in multiple roles. She has been a staple at the front office and the backbone of so much of our services to others. Most of what she has done over the years is never seen by the general parishioners but be assured we will miss her dearly. Of course, we understand she seeks to spend more time with her grandchildren and family in retirement. We wish her well but thank her for her dedication and hard work over the years. Thirdly, I want to acknowledge the gift of Peggy Krewson, our co-principal as she moves to a new role with the Drexel Schools as Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Peggy has been here since the school opened in 2000 and has been the steady hand that has guided us through many turbulent waters. I have come appreciate her deep faith and how it informs her leadership as a principal and educator. She loves the kids and has consistently advocated for their best interests in all her decisions. She is a true gift and wonderful person and I will miss her dearly. Thank you, Peggy for your leadership and commitment to Catholic School education and for your love of the children. Finally, we bid farewell to Ms. Colette O Bannion, assistant principal at Holy Spirit School and Mr. Robert Graves, co-principal with Mrs. Krewson. Ms. O Bannion taught 5th grade for many years before becoming assistant principal. She is heading back home to Southern California for new adventures. Mr. Graves will be moving to the Lake Tahoe area for his new adventures. On behalf of all the staff thank you to all those who are leaving. We will keep you all in our prayers and hope to see you back to visit. Page 2 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018

3 LIVING THE LITURGY M Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3; Ps 98:1-6; Mt 5:1-12 The Four Presences of Christ Last weekend s feast day, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is a celebration where we bring special attention to the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist we receive every week during Communion. This Real Presence of Christ in the bread and the wine consecrated on the altar is one of the most monumental parts of our belief as Catholics, and is absolutely crucial to our worship of God at Sunday Masses. However, while Christ is indeed present in a special way in the Eucharist, there are several other occasions during which Christ is present during the Eucharistic Liturgy. In the years leading up to and following the Second Vatican Council, our Church taught of multiple or unfolding presences of Christ in the Mass. In the 1967 document Instruction on the Eucharistic Mystery, The Church teaches that in the celebration of the Mass the principal modes of Christ s presence to his Church energy clearly one after the other: first he is seen to be present in the assembly of the faithful gathered in his name; then in his word, with the reading and explanation of Scripture; also in the person of the minister; finally in a singular way under the Eucharistic elements. According to the teachings of the Church, the presence unfolds throughout the liturgy in four different forms; the community gathered for Worship in the Liturgy, the Sacred Scripture, the celebrating Priest, and the Eucharist. Christ himself taught that When two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst of them (Mt 18:20). This means that Christ is with us when we gather as a community, whether the gathering is for worship, for fellowship, or for family time. As we lift our time together up to the Lord, Christ in turn makes himself present among us in our celebration together in the Eucharistic Celebration. 4 STEWARDSHIP Saturday at Sacred Heart School aged children and older are invited to join us for our next Saturday at Sacred Heart on June 16th, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. We will help in the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, and anywhere else we are needed to help Sacred Heart prepare to serve their customers in the week ahead. Sign up on the parish website. School aged children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent. Service hours can be earned. Hope to see you at The Heart! Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it. And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. - Matthew 19:14 What better way to honor children than to volunteer to help in our nursey on Sunday mornings at our 9:30 a.m. Mass? Jean Lattie, who heads up our nursery, is seeking volunteers of all ages to help in the Holy Spirit nursery. Volunteers will receive community service hours for their service, but more importantly a taste of the beauty of service in our community. To qualify to serve, teens under 14 must complete a teen leadership code of conduct with their parents; teens between 14 and 18 must complete an online teen training course; and adults 18 and over must be fingerprinted and take an online training course through Virtusonline.com per the requirements of the Diocese of San Jose. Please prayerfully consider whether or not the Lord is calling you or your child to this ministry. If you are interested in serving our community in this way, please contact Katie Metzger at or kmetzger@dsj.org. Layette Ministry Collection Summer Blood Drive Stanford Blood Center will be on site on Saturday, June 23rd from 1:30-6:30 p.m. The bloodmobile will be out in the front parking lot area. If you are free and able, please consider donating blood to help alleviate summer blood shortages. To make an appointment, please visit or contact Row at rdavid@dsj.org. This weekend, June 9th and 10th, the second offering will go to help the layette ministry to purchase diapers, wipes, onesies, sleep/play suits and socks for families in need. The recipient families are a combination of low income, low education and increased exposure to crime, drug use or domestic violence; often single mothers. The members of this ministry knit, crochet and sew afghans, quilts, sweater sets, gowns, fleece sleepers, bibs and caps. These items along with what we purchase through your donation makes up a complete layette. We provide 3 complete layettes a month to the Public Health Nurse along with taking many of our layette items to the Annual Layette Tea, sponsored by the Department of Evangelization, Office for Family Life held in December. We have recently partnered with Sacred Heart Community Services providing them with baby items for their layette program. We are very grateful to our parishioners for your help supporting this ministry. Page 4 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018

5 YOUTH MINISTRY SCHOOL NEWS Diocesan Youth Retreat This week, June 11th-15th, Holy Spirit will be taking a record number of youth to Lake Tahoe for the annual Diocesan Youth Retreat. Roughly 50 youth and 10 leaders will join the 260 youth and 60 leaders up for a five-day retreat. Please keep the youth and leaders in your prayers. Next Steps Edge Middle School Ministry Diocesan Youth Retreat for Middle Schoolers Edge registrations for the school year will open up in August. In the meantime, there is a wonderful opportunity for middle school youth as the Diocese will hold its first ever Diocesan Youth Retreat specifically for Middle School youth. All incoming 6th graders to incoming 8th graders are invited to come! The retreat will be on August 6th-8th at the Alliance Redwoods Retreat site in Occidental, CA. Registration is now open. Please contact Row at rdavid@dsj.org for more info. Last week the Holy Spirit School Class of 2018 received their awards and diplomas as part of a daylong celebration. The Honor s Assembly in the morning was followed by a special luncheon for the graduates and their parents. The evening ended with Mass and the graduation ceremony itself. Congratulations to all the Graduates! We celebrated another milestone last week when the Playground Area was dedicated to Mrs. Peggy Krewson who is moving on after 18 years at Holy Spirit School. On staff since the school opened, Mrs. Krewson s has seen over 700 students graduate and we are incredibly grateful for the invaluable contributions she has made to our school and the children, parents and staff. 6 PASTORAL CARE PARISH ACTIVITIES WEEK AT A GLANCE Dates subject to change. View our complete calendar at: VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL & DIOCESAN YOUTH RETREAT JUNE 11TH-15TH Elder Abuse, Part 1 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2018 is on June 15th and is an annual international UN observance day on the same date each year. With a growing global population of elderly people, and as longevity increases, abuse of the elderly is an increasing and serious problem that affects health and human rights and can cause death, so it is vital to raise awareness of it and thus prevent it whenever and wherever possible. Elder abuse is global and comes in many forms including: Physical abuse use of physical force that results in illness or injury; forced or unwanted contact. Emotional or psychological abuse verbal or nonverbal behavior that causes mental pain. Neglect failure to provide essential medical care, hygiene, food, shelter and other basic necessities of life. Financial exploitation illegal, unauthorized use of a senior's resources, including theft, forgery and misuse of funds, or improper use of guardianship or power of attorney. Seniors who are physically frail, isolated or have Alzheimer's disease or other memory loss are at the highest risk of elder abuse. It happens in a senior's home, in a nursing home or other senior living environment. The abuser might be a stranger, but, sadly, can also be a family member or other trusted person. Other family members can also be affected: seniors lose billions of dollars each year to financial abuse and exploitation costs that are often passed along to loved ones who must step in to cover their care. 7 PARISH ACTIVITIES The Four Presences of Christ (continued from page 3) Christ also becomes present in His teachings through Sacred Scripture. Scripture teaches us about our relationship with God, and teaches us about how to live according to those teachings. In our quest for understanding of how to live in the Light of Christ, God s communication with us makes him present in our hearing of the Word. Hot August Nights Save the date! Our Hot August Nights event is on Saturday, August 25th, from 6:15-7:30 p.m. Hot dogs and salads will be provided. Stay tuned for more information coming soon! Just as Christ teaches about how to live according to God s command in the Gospels, he also establishes for us a lineage of leaders that will represent Him on Earth. These representatives are the Priests who celebrate the Sacred Liturgy and facilitate our Worship. Through their explanation of the readings on Sundays and through the grace of God that enables them to act in the place of Christ (also known as Persona Christi) to administer His miracles of grace through the Sacraments (Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick), they also make Christ present in the liturgy. As the celebrant is present in the Mass, he makes possible the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, which is a grace that allows us to receive Christ, and results in the presence of Christ accompanying us home as we leave our Eucharistic Celebrations. Each of these different presences unfold into each other to result in Christ s presence, and combine to form our ultimate form of Worship: the Mass. Page 7 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018
