1 We follow Christ by Living our Faith, Sharing Knowledge and Serving the Community. 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018 Pack-a-Back 2018 is Coming! Every fall, Sacred Heart distributes backpacks filled with supplies to children who would not otherwise have the materials they need to start the school year. The gift of a supplyfilled backpack allows children to begin school ready to learn. Filled backpacks today nurture the leaders of tomorrow. This year, Sacred Heart will give out 3,300 backpacks! Holy Spirit Parish has generously supported the Pack a Back campaign over the years. You and your family can be part of this important ministry by donating school supplies and/or volunteering with Holy Spirit Parish at Sacred Heart. We will be collecting new school supplies at all Masses the weekends of July 14th and 21st. Bins will also be available in the Parish Hall and Parish Office for donations during the week. See page 7 for a list of needed items. Volunteers will help sort, pack, and distribute supplies and backpacks. Volunteer signups will open on the parish website on July 14th. Here are some important dates: July 14th-22nd, School Supply Drive at Holy Spirit Church July 14th, Volunteer signups open on parish website July 28th, 9:00 a.m. to Noon, Sorting Day at Sacred Heart (ages 8 and up) August 4th, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., Packing Day at Sacred Heart (ages 8 and up) August 10th, 9:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Distribution Day at Sacred Heart (ages 16 and up) We hope you can participate in this drive by donating and/or volunteering! Contact Alison Gibbons Chardos at alison_gibbons@yahoo.com with any questions. Pastor s Note: Welcome! This weekend throughout the diocese, priests move to their new assignments. And some take up new roles as pastor. As you know Fr. Angelo is now pastor of St. Julie Parish in San Jose and he is excited about his new role. He is a little nervous but will do just great. He is a kind and gentle man of faith. Still, change is always hard even when we want it and embrace it. Please keep him in your prayers It is bittersweet news insofar as we have to say good bye to him but we are also very happy for him in this promotion. We are delighted for him and we wish him well. I am also delighted to welcome one of the newly-ordained priests, Fr. Edgar Elamparo. Fr. Edgar was ordained on June 2, 2018 as one of only three priests being ordained for San Jose this year. He went home to the Philippines to celebrate Mass with his extended family back there and also celebrated his first Mass with the communities he served here over the years. We are very happy to welcome him to our community on this weekend. Edgar was born and raised in the Philippines. His family is from the town of Candelaria in the province of Zambales. He has one older (continued on page 2) 1200 Redmond Avenue, San Jose, CA (408)

Principal Has there been a time in your life that you were blown off when sharing about Jesus and the Church? How do we keep the faith and continue to share the gospel with those we love and care about? NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR (continued from page 1) brother, two younger brothers (one deceased), and three younger sisters. They all have their own families and reside in the Philippines. He has a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a major in Computer Science from the Royal Pontifical University of Santo Tomas in Manila. Edgar worked in the Information Technology for a brief period, just like me. Edgar came to the United States in 2005 and served as a Youth Minister at Maria Goretti Parish. He began his Philosophy and Theology studies at St. Patrick s Seminary & University in 2011, where he spent his first six years of formation in the vocation to Priesthood. He served his Pastoral Year with the community of Sacred Heart Saratoga. As many of you know, last year, the San Jose seminarians were transferred to the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/ Mundelein Seminary in Illinois. He is finished the last year of his formation to Priesthood there. Later in the year he will go back to celebrate Mass with the community he served while a deacon in Chicago. About his assignment he says, I am grateful and honored to be assigned and to serve the community of Holy Spirit Parish. I firmly and humbly believe that I am called by God to serve you and to share with you the gifts that He bestowed upon me. I am looking forward to meeting you all and am eager to assist with all your pastoral care needs. Also, in anticipation, I am hoping to minister with you collaboratively and together work as a team, with the help of God, and to learn and share with me your experiences and wisdom as well. Along with a new Parochial Vicar, we also welcome two new staff members to Holy Spirit Parish. With Monica Bayless s retirement in June, we had big shoes to fill finding a new parish administrative assistant. I am pleased to welcome Brendan Randazzo to our staff to take on this new position. Brendan has been involved in Youth Ministry and Music Ministry here at Holy Spirit for several years and is looking forward to giving back to his parish. We also have been looking for a person to help Merry Reardon with Catechetics and Community Engagement as Merry continues to grow our Spirituality offerings at Holy Spirit. I am pleased to announce that Annie Bui will take on those responsibilities beginning July 2, Annie is a recent graduate from San Jose State University and has been working in the Diocesan Chancery offices in the Youth and Young Adult and Liturgy Offices. She has been heavily involved with the Diocesan Youth Retreat as a director in the past. We are delighted to welcome Fr. Edgar, Brendan and Annie and we look forward to working together as a parish team. They are all wonderful people of faith and we are sure that you will love them. Please pray for them as they transition into their new positions, and for Fr. Edgar, his vocation. It is always a great honor and privilege to have a newly ordained priest and we will have the pleasure of being his first parish as priest and we want to make that a great experience. 3 LIVING THE LITURGY Our Sacrifice Meets THE Sacrifice As we attend Mass from week to week, it is important for us to continue to ruminate upon the nature of the celebration. The Mass is a profound encounter with Jesus Christ, during which we join our human sacrifices from our everyday lives with that of Jesus divine Sacrifice, given for us in the form of life, body and blood. There is moment in the Mass during which this joining of our sacrifice with Jesus sacrifice unfolds. After the Gospel reading is proclaimed, the Homily is given, and the interceptions are prayed, the preparatory song begins, and the faithful rise from the pews to place their gift in the offeratory baskets placed in the sanctuary. These baskets are then placed at the altar, and the gifts of wine and bread are brought to the Altar for consecration during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Once all of these gifts are prepared, the presider says: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. We then respond by saying, May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. When we say these words, we are acknowledging two different sacrifices, presented as one to God; the sacrifice of our labors, earnings and prayers, with the sacrifice of Jesus, who sacrificed himself to put and end to the separation from God that comes with sin. When the presider presents the consecrated bread and wine to God during the Eucharistic Prayer, he is presenting a sacrifice that is eternally acceptable to God, and is newly united with the sacrifice of his Church. We then receive this sacrifice, consuming it to become a part of Christ s living sacrifice. As we encounter Christ in the Eucharist at Mass, it is important to remember that the sacrifice of our lives is present in the eternal sacrifice of Jesus Body and Blood. We come to Mass to join in that sacrifice at the Altar, and to bring that sacrifice to the world. 4 STEWARDSHIP Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 17 Saturday Lunch Ministry Please join us in an exciting way to serve others. We meet in the Parish Hall at 10:30 a.m. to make sandwiches and then pack the lunches, which include sandwiches, fruit, cookie, and a drink. After the lunches have been made, we drive to the St. James Park area of downtown San Jose. The sandwiches are distributed to everyone in the park. When everyone has been served, part of the group follows the light rail tracks into the center of the city and distributes sandwiches as they walk. The part of the group who remains in the park cleans up litter. Even litter that isn t part of the Holy Spirit lunches will be cleared away. As we celebrate our liberty and freedom on the Fourth of July coming up on Wednesday, we are aware that we are truly not free and independent. We are necessarily dependent on the goodness of God and the goodness of one another. While a few have stepped up in response to the series of articles seeking additional Liturgical Ministers, we are still in need to make sure we have enough ministers to share the joy. Father Brendan and Father Edgar cannot do this alone. As a reminder we have a need for the following ministers: EMOEs Chairperson: John Greene johnsuegreene@yahoo.com Altar Servers Chairperson: Vani Aboud vaboud@yahoo.com Lectors Chairperson: Sam Florio sfinsj@gmail.com Ushers Chairperson: Leo Semkiw semkiw@pacbell.net Bread Bakers Chairperson: Ted Buszkiewicz buszkie@aol.com Linen Minister Chairperson: Pam O Klock pamo1942@gmail.com Art and Environment Chairperson: Sue Schill sue@bobschill.com If you are interested in serving behind the scenes or during Mass, please reach out to the Chairperson listed for each of our Liturgical Ministries. We invite ten families to join us every 1st Saturday of the month. We ask for a one to one ratio of adults to students as parents need to be with their child especially during the distribution in St. James Park. Student participation is limited to sixth grade and older. A donation of $10 is asked from each family to cover the cost of food and supplies. Our next Saturday Lunch Ministry is July 7th. Signups are now open on the parish website. Saturday at Sacred Heart School aged children and older are invited to join us for our next Saturday at Sacred Heart on Saturday, July 14th, 9:00 a.m. to Noon. We will help in the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet, and anywhere else we are needed to help Sacred Heart prepare to serve their customers in the week ahead. Sign up on the parish website. School aged children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent. Service hours can be earned. Hope to see you at The Heart! Survival Sacks Consider joining us on either July 5th and/or July 19th to distribute Survival Sacks at Sacred Heart Community Service. Volunteers must be 16 or older. We meet at Sacred Heart at 8:45 a.m. and finish up about 10:45 a.m. Sign ups for July open on the parish website on June 25th. Should you need more information, contact either Patty O'Neil or Tom Burgei at tnburgei@yahoo.com. Page 4 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018

View our complete calendar at: MON 7:00 p.m. 7:15 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Music Practice Men s Faith Group AA Meeting Church Classroom 4 PK1 & Parish Hall Summer Heat and Caregiving The dog days of summer can complicate caregiving. Many seniors and vulnerable adults with medical challenges, cognitive diseases, dementia or Alzheimer s, are sensitive to temperature extremes--whether too hot (high Summer temps) or too cold (overlyair conditioned rooms). The result presents as low motivation, appetite and activity levels that aren t good for their health. Here are some ways to keep up with your loved one s health care, socialization and exercise needs during the extreme heat of summer: Use mobile health care. During milder weather, getting out of the house for appointments provides cognitive stimulation and social interaction. But in the sizzling summer months, take advantage of a home health practitioner who makes house calls, mobile labs that come to the house to collect blood or urine samples, and other services. Postpone nonessential appointments on particularly hot days or days with bad air quality. Bring in friends, services & exercise. Invite friends over for meals or short visits, so both care receiver and caregiver have opportunities to socialize with others. Utilize your swimming pool, indoor steps and household items to offer variety in exercise. Even getting up from a chair and sitting down 10 times is good for balance and strength. Watch fluid intake. Even with staying inside most of the summer, increased fluids are still necessary. Seniors often don t feel thirsty, so frequently remind your loved one to sip water. Be cautious of sugar intake. With a doctor s consent, electrolyte supplements may also be beneficial. Insulated cups with straws ensures that drinks stay cooler and, for some reason, straws seem to encourage more drinking. Get your four-legged friends involved. Daily walks are still important for both pets and their owners but remember that hot weather is hard on animals, too. Make sure their water bowls are full, and don t forget that hot pavement can burn paws. Try to save outdoor walks for earlier morning and later evening when shade and cooler temps are more prevalent.
