1 The Servant s Song January February 2014 Thinking of the ways God has touched our lives over the last year, I am grateful for: A Loving God, expressed in three distinct ways. My family who continues to love me (even though they know me pretty well). People who are loving truth-tellers. This congregation which is courageous enough to step forward in faith, with the full knowledge that failure OR success may occur for: ideas, groups, worship, time, efforts, relationships because the Love of God shows how to recover with grace, forgiveness, and belonging. Another year to try living as individual and community with a purpose; to be the people God created us to be (Called by God, Forgiven in Christ, United in Spirit, Sent to Serve) Friends who support us and share our faith story. Those who challenge us in meaningful ways that create growth and trust; limiting fear and anxiety. Times of silence and reflection. Times of strategy and talking. Preaching God s Word (in whatever ways we can and are able) Sharing our collective things (time, abilities, money, and resources) so that ministries might grow and that others might get to know the love of Jesus in big and small ways. Christian brothers and sisters in places near (like Vermillion) and far (like Cameroon, Central African Republic, Nicaragua, and Guatemala) The Holy Spirit (who continues to scare me into life every day) The light that shines and draws us to Christ the Light of the World. May your days be holy in God s promise fulfilled that God is with us, Emmanuel. 2 Stephen Ministry at Trinity I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. John 8:12 The Christmas lights in the streets and yards and homes are so welcome at this the darkest time of the year. I leave mine up through February just because I think we need that cheerfulness in the dark and cold of South Dakota winters. After Christmas I call them winter lights. There is another darkness that often grips us, and that is spiritual and emotional despair or depression. Whether it is caused by the season, uncontrollable circumstances, illness, or doubting faith, this situation often needs help outside ourselves to give us relief. Stephen Ministers are trained to help in many of these cases. They are equipped to bring the light of Christ to those whose lives have been darkened by the sorrows that life has handed them. If you or anyone you know could use this service from a Stephen Minister, talk to one of the pastors or Barb Schwartz or me. We are here to offer hope. Jesus, light of the world, shine your light and love into our lives in the coming year. Give us the courage to ask for the help we need. In your holy name we pray Amen Janice Olson Stephen Leader Page 2 January: Brad and Karol Brodersen; Kevin and Cindy Brown, Jack; Bob and Elaine Brown; Curtis Crichton; Reta Eidem; Carol Finnegan, Rachel, Amanda, and Ben; Michele Gerten, Chance, Jason, Kylee and Keegan; Paul and Jeanne Hagenbuch, Thomas; Mark and Lori Jerred; Sierra Johnson; Sid Johnson; Dustin and Katie Larson, Jayce; Steve and Jan Mattes, Jacob, Caleb, and Cody; Derek and Crystal Moeller, Aubri and Braxton; Tim and Cristi McClelland, Emily and Hannah; Jerry and Kim Miller, Dylan; Todd and Linda Moe; Elmer and Beverly Mount; Harvey and Barb Mount; Cindy Nelson; Rick Retzlaff; Fred and Diane Savoie; Craig and Lisa Sorensen, Emma, Alexander; Steve and Jane Stewart; Donnie Stewart; Lyle and Edna Timm; John and Glenda Walker; John and Brenda Wortmann, Cody February Scott Abbott; Caroline Anderberg and Parker; Greg and Linda Baedke; Ryan and Lora Baedke; Mary Lynn Berntson; Dave and Shelly Brunick; Tim and Kim Cowman; Craig and Liz DeVelder, Tyler and Kate; Julie and Dave Fallan, Erika; Kelsy Fallan and Todd Gannon, Kyler; Harold and Beverly Fischer; Tiffany Glenn; Larry and Lori Hawley; Kaius and Paula Helenurm, Mark and Kevin; Craig and Chris Johnson, Courtney and Jeremiah; Eileen Johnson; Richard and Ramona Kellogg; Marcy Lund; Mark and Pat Meyers; Jane O Brien; Ron and Ann Schoellerman; Dennis and Sophia Sjolie, Julius and Elias; Opal Smith; Grand Sommervold, Cody; Ford Sommervold; Tom and Mary Sorensen; Jason and DeAnn Szymonski, Sarah, Matt, Beth Serving Groups for January-February 2014 All those who attend Trinity are invited to volunteer to serve as greeters, ushers, coffee hosts, reader, and nursery attendants for the Sundays in January and February. 5 Page 5 The View from the Bench Happy New Year! And it IS a happy new year, in ever so many ways. As I write this, we are getting ready for Christmas services here at Trinity. I love to hear the singing of the carols, the reading of the Word, the children in worship, and seeing people who I only see that one time a year. On Christmas Day my mother, my husband, and I will be flying to California where we will see our little four-month-old Nova, her mommy and daddy, her uncle Ben, and her Aunt Sarah and cousins, Abby and Avery. It is going to be such a good time! We are all excited about it. Our celebrations will be low key. No big meals, no piles of presents. But there will be lots of playing, singing, and talking. I will probably need a vacation when I get home! The girls and I will probably be up during the night when Nova wakes. But she is only little once and under normal circumstances I only get to see my kids every 2-3 years. So it is worth it. I have been thinking about Mary and Joseph and this wonderful baby, Jesus, who came into their lives ever so many years ago. They had so many visitors: angels, shepherds, wise men, and who knows who else. They took Jesus to the temple for circumcision, where he was the visitor long awaited by Simeon and Anna. They each felt that now their lives were fulfilled - they could die in peace because they had seen Jesus and God had revealed who he was. Then the little family was visited by more angels and finally Herod s soldiers. It turned out that they had to flee to Egypt to escape those soldiers. That is the message the angels brought. It was several years before they could return to their home of record, Nazareth. They traveled for the feast of the Passover. Jesus got left behind and when his parents found him, he said, Didn t you know I must be about my Father s business? (This would have been, according to the Bible, the first time Jesus really confronted his parents with who he really was. The Biblical response was, And Mary pondered all these things in her heart. We too have a star to guide us, which forever will provide us with the light to find our Lord, with the light to find our Lord. And this star, as bright as day, that will never lead astray with its message so appealing, is the word of God, revealing Christ, the way the truth, the life, Christ, the way, the truth, the life. I give thanks for you each and every day, as we walk together through these days when we really don t know what is going to happen. May we live in the knowledge that this Christ in whom we believe IS indeed the way, the truth, and the life. See YOU in church! Christy Kimball As I write this article Christmas is just a week away and the New Year is in sight. I always get excited for the holidays. I love everything about them. Before I know it, I become consumed with all of the cooking, the parties, the friends and family gathering together, and all of the minute details that only I probably care about. Somewhere in the middle of the chaos, I have to stop and remind myself to be present in the here and now. That is, to take today for the joys or sorrows it brings. I am guessing that many of you, like me, do the same thing. We are constantly bombarded by messages of the things that we supposedly need, and with the New Year around the corner there are those New Year s resolutions. There is much to worry about, contemplate and consume our time with, and it s usually in preparation for tomorrow. If we are not careful, this has the potential to rob us of the things that are important in the here and now. Sometimes we just need permission from an outside source (someone or something other than ourselves). So I share this verse from Matthew 6:34 with you, Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. What if our lives were like that? I remember when my first child was born. It was SO exciting! We had a lot of family nearby. It was a celebration. But Mary and Joseph were in a strange town, in a stable not even a nice bed for the time! All these odd people coming to see them, and before their son was 2 to have his life endangered by the ruler of the country! Mary s response over time was to ponder these things. She would have thought about them from time to time. I imagine there are some things that we ponder also the what ifs of our lives. And yet, when we gather together at this time of year, we sing these glorious carols and celebrate all the good things that even we don t truly understand. As we go into this happy, yet unknown, new year, let us remember the last 2 verses of Bright and Glorious Is the Sky, Guided by the star they found him whose praise the ages sound. Each day we are made new! In the Small Catechism Luther asks the question, What does baptism mean for daily living? He answers that question by saying that we need to drown our sin and rise a new creation each day. Leave our shortcomings at the door of yesterday and be ready for what today brings. Of course this doesn t mean that we stop thinking about what comes tomorrow or the day after that and etc. It also doesn t mean that we can easily forget what happened yesterday. It does, however, give us permission to stop and breath, smell the roses, or just enjoy the company of loved ones today. May your New Year be one that is filled with love, peace, laughter and the joy of friendship. Peace, Intern Pastor Jason

7 Page 7 A message from the President Ah, January!!! Please remember and attend the Congregation s Annual Meeting which will be held after Sunday services on January 19, 2014, in the Church Sanctuary. We have several VERY IMPORTANT items to discuss and decisions to make. As you are aware. 1) Synod and Church-wide have passed down several optional changes from their model constitution. 2) Also, due to our Financial Emergency and lack of funds, the Executive Committee and Council have set staff positions as follows: one (1) full-time pastor, one(1) full-time Office Administrator/ Manager, one (1) part-time Worship Planner and Music Ministry Professional, and three (3) part-time custodians. (Pre-School teachers as needed and determined by the Pre -School/Education Board.) Salary and benefits have been frozen until the Financial Emergency is cancelled and offerings are regularly adequate to ensure that all bills, debts, and expenditures can be paid in full and on time. Thus, no new or renewed positions. And, an end to the Intern Program when Jason s Internship is finished in August.. As we think back on 2013, let us not forget the amazing pot luck dinners, Stone Soup Supper, special events and gatherings, gifts to the congregation, Bible studies, programs, Vacation Bible School, confirmation, choir presentations, volunteers and their various ministries, the fellowship and sharing among our congregation, those who joined our Lord, services and children s sermons, Will and Jason, quilts, graduates, Lutheran World Relief, food pantry gifts and services, talents provided by members and guests, radio broadcasts, the joy of God s love and Son, and the hope of God s promise and Good News. May God continue to bless Trinity Lutheran, its congregation, and its ministries. Thank you one and all. May we all be a blessing to our families, our congregation, our Church, our communities, our country, and everyone we meet and greet. Please remember, also, those less fortunate than ourselves -- those in prison, the homeless, the oppressed, the needy, the sick and afflicted, and those who grieve. AND, may we all make time to rejoice in what God has given us and share the Good News with others. NEW YEAR 2014 May, God Bless you and yours in the coming year. And, may you always remember His son, love, and promises. January s birthdays and anniversaries: CON- GRATULATIONS to ALL. Please remember the Birthday and Anniversary Clubs to which a contribution of $1 for each year really helps us meet our benevolence pledge to the Synod. We will be working with Pastor Jeff, the pastor at our host church. We will get to experience some of his heart for the community. As we immerse ourselves in the culture of this region, we will have the opportunity to serve those residents who struggle with poverty through a variety of work projects and facilitating a Kids Club. We ll learn more about the history and culture of this community when we visit Mesa Verde National Park where people carved homes into side of a mountain, attend a church service and help to host a community cookout. In addition we will meet Shirley, a community friend who teaches about the influence of native culture in Cortez, shares about her family's work of making and selling horsehair pottery, and makes fry bread for groups to try. In 2014 Youthworks will also be serving on the nearby Ute Mountain Reservation. This trip is facilitated by Youthworks, we will join in service with youth from other parts of the country and share in the ministry of the Church. Youthworks is an organization that facilitates mission trips throughout the country.
