This is to accommodate a safer procedure for picking up and dropping off children at the school. Please note that given the new direction of the parking stripes it is better to enter the parking lot from Fifth Street and exit onto Columbus Avenue.
2 Director Found We have found a Catholic Education Director to coordinate our parish education programs. Kara McManus, who is currently our full-time Parish Secretary, has been offered a new position with a local company which she has accepted. She will stay on at Our Lady of Peace, however, in a different part-time position as our Catholic Education Director. Book Discussion Group This first meeting of the Book Discussion Group will be this Thursday, September 20, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. in the church basement meeting room. We will be reading Life s Greatest Lesson by Allen Hunt. New members are always welcome. Please register by contacting Sister Virdean at Capital Campaign Thanks to all who have contributed to our recent capital campaign. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. If you have not yet contributed, we hope you will still consider making a donation. While we have exceeded our goal for the cost of the campaign, our parish has a long tradition of having a comfortable reserve in our Building & Grounds Fund, usually $75,000 to $100,000. It would be wonderful if we could continue this practice. We should all be very proud of the beautiful buildings of our parish and how well we have been able to maintain them over the years. On the first weekend of October, a list of donors to the Campaign will be printed in the bulletin to publicly thank them and acknowledge their support Fr. Doug. Feed the Hungry Volunteers from Our Lady of Peace are scheduled to prepare and serve the St. Vincent de Paul Fellowship Meal this Wednesday, September 19. If you are able to help cook, serve, or clean up, please come to St. Vincent de Paul by 4:00 p.m. Please contact Marie Fleisner at for more information. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the program by which those who are not Catholic prepare to become members of the Church or adult Catholics who are not confirmed prepare for Confirmation. Confirmed Catholics have also participated in RCIA just to learn more about their faith. Our Lady of Peace Parish will begin our RCIA program this Monday, September 10, at 6:30 p.m. in Dillenburg Hall. To register for the program or for additional information please contact Sister Virdean Meyer at
3 Life Savers The Knights of Columbus will be offering Lifesavers candies for a monetary donation after the Masses on October 6-7. Some look to Jesus as the reliever of pain and suffering. We want to believe in a God who will take away the discomfort we are feeling and make things better. Frustration and even a lessening of faith can happen when we realize this is not happening. Jesus is the Christ. As the Christ, he is the one who shows us how to keep both the joys and sorrows of life in balance. There is no hopping, skipping, or jumping over suffering. It is a part of life. In addition to the physical pain we are asked to endure, living the Gospel can bring rejection and suffering as well. Jesus the Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Do we have the desire and faith to follow him? Stewardship I must confess. I have not always prayed for someone if I told him or her I would. I have fallen victim to making the phrase, "You are in my prayers," a sentence void of real emotion or intent. It is like asking the question, "How are you?" Do I always want to know how you are at the time? Then follows the most common responses of "fine" or "good." I could have had the worst day, but I still utter a response that does not reflect my true state. Many of us say things to be nice without really thinking about it. At least, I hope I am not the only one. The truth is that words are meaningless without action. We sometimes make ourselves and others feel better by saying we will do things only to provide no action at all. Offering best wishes to those in real need without any action is worth little. Even if we think we are sincere, true faith without works is dead. Good stewardship requires us to say what we mean and mean what we say. Stewardship is a way of living.
4 It does ask for sentiments of love. It asks for profound actions of love. We need to offer our gifts, talents, time, and prayers to one another and then follow through. This means we need to be more mindful of what we are saying, more committed to following through, and more accountable for our actions if we fail. If we practice this way of living, not only will we be able to say we are doing the right thing, but our integrity will be intact and we will bear witness to the transforming power of Jesus Christ Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS. Catholic Quote There can be no peace unless there is soul peace. For nothing happens in the external world that has not first happened within a soul Bishop Fulton Sheen. Q&A Why do we celebrate Catechetical Sunday? The mission of the church reflects the mission of Jesus to teach, preach, heal, and forgive. Through these acts, Jesus shares the good news of salvation and invites all people to share in the life and love of God. The church continues this mission in all its ministries, but especially, and perhaps most importantly, through catechesis. the Gospel is entrusted to the whole community, who by word and example, form young and new members in the way of the Gospel. Parish programs assist parents in teaching the basics of faith through liturgical experience, instruction, and faith formation. This ministry is essential for the parish to grow, for individuals to develop as believers, and for the ongoing spiritual formation of the whole community. It reminds the church that preaching the Gospel and growing in faith are essential to our sacramental practice and our liturgical prayer. On this Sunday, we recognize those who are called to be teachers and ask for God's blessing and grace. Catechetical Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of September. The task of handing on
