2 May 1, 2016 CELEBRATION OF WORSHIP Sixth Sunday of Easter Communion Sunday 11:00 AM PRELUDE Andante in D Flat Rheinberger GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS WE APPROACH GOD CHORAL INTROIT This Is the Day the Lord Hath Made Whitworth Chancel Choir *CALL TO WORSHIP Philippians 2:5-11 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore, God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Let us worship God together, Creator, Son, and Spirit. *HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 263 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name Coronation *PRAYER OF ADORATION Gracious and Loving God, we come to you with wonder of what you would have us learn this day. You know our essence and you know our potential, so what new person will you help to create in us today? We come with expectant hope of new life in this season of Easter and all the seasons to come. Work with this clay that is each of us and each day re-mold us once again. All praise be to you our Potter and our God. Amen. *ACT OF PRAISE Creation Sings! Each Plant and Tree St. Catherine Creation sings! Each plant and tree, each bird and beast in harmony; the brightest star, the smallest cell, God s tender care and glory tell. From ocean depths to mountain peaks, in praise of God, creation speaks! WE HEAR GOD S WORD GOSPEL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Teaching Elder Keith Sundberg (Following the time with children, our young people through kindergarten age may be excused to child care) PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
3 Unpack the ten words, O God, that we are about to read. May they continue to speak to our hearts and minds long after the service ends. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. We begin this morning and this week in celebration of you. We are grateful for the gift of life, of faith, and of new life which is renewed in and through this communion meal. Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy, Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy, Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray, Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day. Empower us to live faith-filled lives at work and at play, finding ways to advance your kingdom in the intentional and the accidental. May this meal fuel our hearts and our hands to be your faithful servants in the world. Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith, Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe, Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray, Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day. As you are gracious to us may we be gracious to others: those who are easy to love and those who are a challenge. Fill us with agape love that requires nothing other than a willingness to care. Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace, Your hands swift to welcome, your arms to embrace, Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray, Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
4 Watch over us to the end of our waking hours and our living hours. For in your hands we place our trust with assurance of your eternal love. Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm, Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm, Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray, Your peace in our hearts, Lord, at the end of the day. As Jesus bid us pray, we offer his words together praying, Our Father. 5 WAYSIDE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Sunday, May 1, 2016 WELCOME I will show love to those who were called unloved and, to those who were called not-my-people, I will say you are my people and they will answer, you are our God. (Hosea 2:23) Wayside Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) is a place where the mind is nourished as well as the spirit, and where we affirm the dignity and worth of every person. As we are all created in the image of God, we believe discrimination is incompatible with Christ s Gospel of unconditional love. While we celebrate our Presbyterian identity, we acknowledge that we are not alone on the path to understanding God. We invite conversations that move us to seek a deeper understanding of life in the Spirit. Be who you are and be welcome here. FOR OUR CHILDREN Childcare is available during the entire worship hour for infants and preschool children. Children may remain for the entire service or take advantage of childcare (kindergarten and younger). Children s worship activity bags are available for children remaining in the worship service. Please return them following worship. SERVICE NOTES A hearing enhancement system is available for those who have a need. An usher will be happy to provide you with a receiver this morning. A complete list of needed items is located at the collection point in the lobby and slips to take home are on the Information Table. Items may be placed in the baskets in the lobby and will be delivered to the Soldiers' and Sailors' Home during the week of May 23, or more often as necessary. SUPPORT THE YOUTH MISSION TO BROAD STREET MINISTRIES IN PHILADELPHIA May provides two opportunities to support this year s Youth Mission. During today s the Spring Convocation, we will hold another bake sale. On Sunday May 22, the Youth will wash cars to help fund their trip. We hope you will support their efforts. HABITAT WALK/RUN On June 4 at 9:00 AM, Habitat for Humanity will join with 23 other local agencies to participate in a 5K walk/run at Beach 1 on Presque Isle State Park. Last year 28 Waysiders signed up to walk or run in this event to earn funds for Habitat s Celebration House. We hope to exceed that number this year and earn money to help build this year s house, The House of Trust! If you would like to join us, please sign up at the Habitat table in the church lobby before June 4 th. This is a fun run (or walk) and is a wonderful chance for families to spend time walking with friends at Presque Isle. Strollers and wagons are welcome! Since our walkers and runners are giving their time the day of this event, we do not want them to have to solicit their own sponsors. We, as a congregation, will sponsor all our participants. We hope that many people will stop by the Habitat table and fill out a pledge card in support of all our walkers and runners! Last year we earned $1,050 and we hope raise at least $1 more than that this year! All checks should be payable to Habitat for Humanity-Erie and should be turned in to the church before June 4. Stop by the Habitat table in the lobby for more information and to sign up to walk or run AND to sign a pledge card! WEEKLY GIFTS TO THE WEST MILLCREEK FOOD PANTRY Next week s suggested items for the Food Pantry are tuna and canned spaghetti. Non-perishable items such as diapers, feminine hygiene products, toiletries and pet foods are always appreciated. Checks should be made out to West Millcreek Food Pantry.
