2 WELCOME TO HOPE & PURPOSE at EASTWOOD HALL Guys, welcome to our Autumn Conference, a brand new event for CVM. One of the things that we continually see at CVM is that the Gospel is the hope for our nation. As men from all different journeys and paths we have this incredible potential to not only discover Jesus for ourselves but to boldly and unashamedly live for Him too and introduce as many of our mates to him as we can. This year at Hope & Purpose, we want to welcome you to have a cracking weekend (no pun intended on the injury award) to relax, find the space you might be needing but to also, and critically, set some space aside in your head and heart for God to speak to you. 3 autumn conference SPEAKERS NATHAN BLACKABY Nathan is CEO of CVM and is co-hosting and speaking this weekend. He spent about 10 years working in north-east Brazil with Latin Link and Teen Challenge. He also pastored a church in Essex before joining CVM full-time in Nathan loves gaming, motorbikes, fast cars, ales and writing. CARL BEECH Carl is President of CVM and is co-hosting and speaking this weekend. He is a church leader and renowned speaker and writer. He joined the CVM team in 2005 having already served as a trustee. Carl enjoys endurance challenges and has competed in several marathons and long-distance cycle rides. IAN COFFEY Ian is taking our daily Bible studies this weekend. He is a Vice Principal of Moorlands College, he lectures on both the BA and MA courses, where he draws upon more than 40 years of leadership experience in both the local church and parachurch contexts. PHIL SLANEY Phil is taking our thought for the day sessions this weekend. He is a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor and a Director at Crossroads Counselling. He was previously a member of the National Executive at the Baptist Men s Movement. GRAHAM KENDRICK Graham and his band will be leading us in worship this weekend. He is a singer, songwriter and worship leader. His career began in the late 60s and he has written some of the most widely heard songs in contemorary Christian worship worldwide. He and his band will also be performing to us on Saturday evening. STEVE LEGG Steve will be entertaining us on Friday evening and throughout the weekend. He travels the length and breadth of the UK and internationally using a daft mix of comedy, trickery, mystery and escapology to communicate the gospel. 6 SEMINARS We have a packed programme of seminars for you with some excellent speakers who are experts in their field. Each seminar lasts for 45-minutes and will be repeated up to three times* to enable you to attend the sessions that are right for you. Please sign up on the board after the evening meeting on Friday to give us an indication of numbers and help us allocate the right sized rooms. Details of exact locations of each seminar will be available on Saturday morning. Men in Midlife - TONY HORSFALL Midlife what is it? Must it be a crisis? Five changes you (and others) will notice. Five challenges you will face. Four choices you can make. Tony is a freelance trainer and retreat leader based in Yorkshire where he is an elder at Ackworth Community Church. Tony has served as a missionary and church leader, is an established author, and gives time to mentoring others. He survived midlife by the skin of his teeth and is passionate about helping others make a good transition. Sporting Memories - MARK BLYTHE (*only available once at 14:00) Old sports photos, programmes, memorabilia, quizzes, stories, laughs, laughs, laughs... Some can remember the 1962 school team but not what they had for breakfast, reminiscing is good for the mind. Mark Blythe leads Sporting Memories sessions for Fulham FC Foundation, walking football for West Ham and Chelsea Foundations, is a Sports Centre Chaplain and the CVM Sports guy. Amazing for a guy with such little sporting talent. Facing our Mortality - preparing for and coping with death and bereavement - Phil slaney The seminar will look at coping with the death of a loved one and facing our own death maybe because of accident or illness/disease. Also some practical steps on how to deal with grief and who to ask for help and support. We will be drawing on what we can learn from scripture to help us cope in today s world. 7 Too Good to Keep? Pass it On. Sharing the Gospel with Your Generations - Paul GASKY Gask Kingdom succession planning? What does this really mean? How do we, as men, share the good news of Jesus with our families? What are the results? Gasky will share some of his thoughts and experiences on reaching those following on. What legacy will you leave with your family? Gasky has been married to Sue for 32 years and they have two daughters and five grandchildren. He retired as a police officer from the Leicestershire Police in October 2011 after 30 years of service. The bulk of his service was spent in the specialist crime arena. He now serves as CVM s Regional Director for the north of England and spends his days telling men about Jesus! Men s Health, those questions you hoped you wouldn t be asked - Phil Charlton This won t be a rant to eat salad, steam chicken and do more exercise. We ll look at why men view health differently, what s likely to kill you, how you might spot it, and how to get it sorted. Phil has been married to Denise for twenty years, and is the father of three grown up children. He trained as a nurse with the Royal Air Force at the University of Portsmouth qualifying in 1999, his post registration studies have been with Universities of Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Southampton and The Royal Defence Medical College. He s been a Christian since 1991 and is now working as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in General Practice. Going it alone? - ROGER LEITCH A change in circumstances can mean any of us can find that we are going it alone. In this seminar we will explore, through discussion; the impact of loneliness; what causes loneliness?; what can we do about it personally?; what can we do about it as churches?; what practical next steps can we take? Roger has been married to Deborah for 34 years. They have three grown up children and this year they became instant grandparents to 2 young boys through adoption. For 43 years he worked for a well-known British Telecommunications company, starting out as an apprentice and retired early 4 years ago. He became a Christian aged 17 and has been very involved in all aspects of church life. He is a contributor to the CVM Blog and regularly wears an orange hi-vis vest at The Gathering.
