3 The Catholic Church of St. Ann, Raritan, New Jersey Pope Francis General Audience May 30, 2018 From the desk of Bishop James F. Checchio May 17, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters: In our catechesis on the sacrament of Confirmation, we have seen that it is a further spiritual anointing that completes the grace of Baptism and leads to the Eucharist. The rite of Confirmation recalls and renews the promises made at Baptism and invokes a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Just as Jesus received the outpouring of the Spirit at his baptism in order to carry out his messianic mission, the Church prays that we too may receive the gifts and fruits of the Spirit that enable us to help the Body of Christ grow in unity and missionary zeal. The gift of the Spirit is communicated through the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred chrism. Saint Paul sheds light on the meaning of these sacramental signs when he says that God has anointed us, by putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit in our hearts (2 Cor 1:21-22). Sealed with the Holy Spirit, we are configured more closely to Christ and strengthened to bear witness to him in our world. May each of us grow in gratitude for the gift received at our Confirmation and open our hearts ever more fully to the creativity of the Spirit who makes all things new. Pope Francis Prayer Intentions Each year, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention each month. The Holy Father plans to add a prayer intention each month related to current events or urgent needs, like disaster relief. The urgent prayer request will help mobilize prayer and action related to the urgent situation. The Holy Father has entrusted these intentions in a particular way to the Apostleship of Prayer, an organization that works to encourage Christians to respond to the Pope's appeal and to deepen their daily prayer. Pope Francis Prayer Intention for June 2018 Social Networks That social networks may work towards that inclusiveness which respects others for their differences. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, To continue, I am told that within the next few weeks, I will have celebrated Mass and visited all our parishes at least twice since my arrival, and many pastors have been kind enough to host me more frequently for Masses on various occasions. Likewise, I have visited all of our elementary and high schools and have prayed with our students. I decided early on in my time here to only celebrate confirmations during the weekdays, so as to leave the weekends for diocesan events and parish visits. This has been a joy for me and gives me great encouragement in my episcopal ministry. Finally, I want to share some thoughts with you about this time of year which is such an exciting and powerful one. The readings at Mass, particularly from the Acts of the Apostles, tell us about the growth and blessings as well as the many serious challenges the Early Church experienced after the Lord s resurrection. We are now also in the midst of the greatest novena the Church prays all year long, the nine days between the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost. Mary and the Apostles were gathered in the Upper Room in prayer, awaiting the Holy Spirit. They join us in prayer now, for our diocese as we await a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As I wrote in my pastoral letter to you last year, There will be no renewal in our diocese without begging the Holy Spirit to pour out once again those graces that were poured out on that first Pentecost. We must personally and communally expect, yearn and pray for a New Pentecost in our midst. Please join me in fervent prayer throughout this week for this new Pentecost for us! The Holy Spirit has come alive for me in a new way throughout these two years with you as I have been blessed to confirm so many of our youth with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and have prayed with you in our parishes and schools communities. I am eager for all to experience and see this same movement of the Holy Spirit gently blowing across our beautiful diocese. So, I want to take this opportunity to remind us all again, that if we are to live our Christian lives to the full, we must have a renewed appreciation for, and relationship with, the Holy Spirit. The Most Reverend James F. Checchio, JCD, MBA Bishop of Metuchen 2018 Bishop s Annual Appeal The Catholic Church of St. Ann Contribution Update To date, the Development Office has received pledges totaling $62, and payments totaling $55, from 278 parishioners. This represents 96.6% of your $65, goal. 3

4 Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ - June 3, 2018 June 3, 2018 Dear Family of St. Ann, We gather today on the beautiful feast of Corpus Christi. Saint John Paul II said of this day in 2001: Christ who died and rose for us is really present in the Holy Eucharist. In the consecrated Bread and Wine, the same Jesus of the Gospels remains with us whom the disciples met and followed, whom they saw crucified and risen, whose wounds Thomas touched, exclaiming prostrate in adoration: My Lord and my God!. In the Sacrament of the altar, there are offered for our contemplation the full depths of the mystery of Christ, the Word and the flesh, the divine glory and his tent among men. Before this Sacrament, we are sure that God is with us, that in Jesus Christ he assumed all the dimensions of our human nature, except sin, emptying himself of his glory to clothe us with it. The invisible face of Christ, the Son of God, is manifest in his Body and Blood in the simplest and, at the same time, the most exalted way possible in this world. The ecclesial community responds to people in every age who ask perplexed: We wish to see Jesus, by repeating what the Lord did for the disciples of Emmaus: He broke the bread. In the breaking of the bread, the eyes of those who seek him with a sincere heart are opened. In the Eucharist, the intuition of the heart recognizes Jesus and his unmistakable love lived to the end. And in him, in that gesture, it recognizes the Face of God! The Face of God is here with us. Gaze at Him. Let Him gaze at you. Let your heart be changed by His Presence with us. As a Christian people, this reality is the greatest reality of our lives. We belong to Him who came among us and made Himself one of us. Whatever your weaknesses are, whatever your sins are, let God love you in His mercy. Go to Him Who made you. He knows you and loves you and wants to make of your life only love. We can be such instruments of His love in the world, if we would only give Him our time and our lives. Wherever we are as Christian believers, as baptized Catholics, we are His and we are meant to give all for Him. Give thanks to Him for wherever He brings us, whatever He asks us. Last year on this solemnity, Pope Francis said: The Eucharist gives us a grateful memory, because it makes us see that we are the Father s children, whom he loves and nourishes. It gives us a free memory, because Jesus love and forgiveness heal the wounds of the past, soothe our remembrance of wrongs experienced and inflicted. It gives us a patient memory, because amid all our troubles we know that the Spirit of Jesus remains in us. The Eucharist encourages us: even on the roughest road, we are not alone; the Lord does not forget us and whenever we turn to him, he restores us with his love. Be grateful and be restored. Each and every one of us is called to this encouragement, for we are not alone, especially when we feel most troubled. The Lord is near. Give thanks to Him and let Him embrace you, your whole life and everyone in it. Don t try to live life without Him. Self-reliance only takes us away from His tremendous Presence. See you in the Eucharist, Fr. John Rozembajgier 4

The choir will be singing two timeless hymns regarding this mystery. The first is Ave Verum Corpus whose text is translated, Hail true body, born of the Virgin Mary suffered on the cross for man. From whose perforated side flowed water and blood be a foretaste of death for man. The second is Panis Angelicus, The bread of heaven is made the bread of men; the bread of heaven puts an end to the symbol. What a wonder! Eating the poor, servant, and humble Lord. May these ancient texts make us further understand the mystery of the Body and Blood of Christ.
