2017 SUNDAY SERVICES Holy Eucharist 8 a.m. & 10 a.m. WEEKDAY SERVICES Holy Eucharist Thursday 10:45 a.m. TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH 55 River Road Collinsville, CT

What s Different about our Lenten Worship Services? Lent is the season of the Church year that runs for 40 weekdays and 6 Sundays between Ash Wednesday and Easter Day. It is a penitential season where we do not say or sing the Gloria in Excelsis nor do we use Alleluias in our prayers or music. You ll notice the liturgical color of purple and that there are no flowers on the Altar. We ll ring a gong at the time the procession is to begin. At 10 a.m. we ll process and recess in silence and without the singing of hymns. Hymns that are sung during the service will be a little more penitential in nature. Our service will begin with the different opening acclamation, Bless the Lord who forgiveth/forgives all our sins and the people respond with His mercy endureth/endures for ever. We ll use on occasion the Decalogue where we hear the commandments of God to God s people. All of these changes help us live more fully into the penitential nature of Lent and help us prepare ourselves for the joy of Easter Day. There are many offerings during Lent to consider, and we hope that you will find new or renewed ways to be nourished as we journey together through the season of Lent

Services and Special Events Silent Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery, West Park, N.Y. Friday, February 10 Sunday, February 12 Trinity joined other Episcopal Churches in the Hartford area for a silent retreat and guided meditations at this Episcopal Monastery with a focus on keeping a holy Lent. We shared this time away with Grace Episcopal Church-Hartford, St. James Episcopal Church-Glastonbury, St. Mary s-manchester, and Trinity Episcopal Church-Hartford, and the Revs. Don Hamer, Rowena Kemp and Linda Spiers were to share the meditations. The Rev. Joe Pace was guest Preacher and Celebrant at Trinity on February 12. Save the date for next year s retreat at Holy Cross, which will be the first weekend in Lent (February 16-18, 2018)! Shrove Tuesday Mardi Gras Dinner returns on February 6:30 p.m. Join us for an authentic Mardi Gras celebration on this night. We ll have New Orleans delicacies along with traditional pancakes. A free will offering will be taken that evening and proceeds will be given to Miriam s Closet. Trinity young people will help cook pancakes! Among other treats you ll find Al Prudhomme s New Orleans Gumbo, Nancy Hearn s Jambalaya, and King Cake. Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and the name Shrove comes from the Middle Ages word shrive to confess. On that day people would go to Confession so that their sins would be forgiven before the holy 2

season of Lent began. It was also the day that all of the cream, butter, eggs and the fat in a household had to be used up, since Lent was truly a time of penitence and those products were forbidden to be eaten during Lent. Therefore, using up all of those delicious ingredients by making pancakes became a means for celebrating one last time before the discipline of Lent began. In that spirit you ll be able to enjoy pancakes and there will be much, much more. So, join us to celebrate together as a parish family on Tuesday, February 28! Bring a friend and come. Ash Wednesday, March 1 Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes Ashes to Go 6:30-8:30 a.m., Ash Wednesday traditional liturgy at 4 p.m. & 7 p.m. Each service invites all to the observance of a holy Lent. We are all called to Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. (BCP, 265). Ashes to Go will be in Trinity s parking lot with the Invitation to a Holy Lent and Imposition of Ashes and a hot cross bun to go. The two later services include the Imposition of Ashes and the Holy Eucharist. Our choir will sing at the 7 p.m. service. Lenten Book Study Sundays of March 5, 12, 19, 26, April 2 and April 9. On Sundays in Lent at 9:10 a.m. you re invited to gather in the Memorial Room for a weekly exploration of Michelle Alexander s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. This is a New York Times Bestseller, winner of 3

the NAACP Image Award, and winner of the Constitutional Commentary Award. Once in a great while a book comes along that changes the way we see the world and helps to fuel a nationwide social movement With dazzling candor, legal scholar Michelle Alexander argues that we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it. Linda has copies of the book available and there is a Kindle edition as well. Please to join us. Lenten Lending Library March 1 and throughout Lent In the Narthex are books recommended for your Lenten reading. Please select a book that interests you, and sign your name and the book you ve borrowed. Enjoy this way to focus on a Lenten theme. Be sure to take a copy of the Living Compass s Living Well Through Lent: Listening With All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind. There are resources for all ages. Lenten devotional materials for families to use at home are also available. Trinity s teens will be given a day-by-day booklet for their use during Lent. Electronic Devotional Materials There are a number of options available for those who wish to receive a day-by-day devotional on your computer or smartphone. Check out It s a great website for Lenten devotions for teens and young adults or for adults that includes a short series of prayer and meditative music. Another possibility is where you ll find information about the ministry of the brothers of the Anglican Society of Saint John the Evangelist, Cambridge. This year the Brothers Lenten weekly series will 4

focus on Five Marks of Love. You can also sign up there for Brother Give Us a Word, and a word with brief reflection will be sent to you daily. Another option is where you ll find a site run by Irish Jesuits and a way to make a Sacred Space in your day with daily prayer. You can bookmark this site and offer daily prayers by being led deeply into Holy Scripture each day. Check out churchnextblog.wordpress.com for some free Lenten resources online for prayer or study. These are just a few options. Find something that works for you Connect to Our Holy Land This year the services in Lent, Holy Week and Easter will include Prayers of the People that help us to remember the plight of our sisters and brothers living in Israel/Palestine. There are two organizations, Jerusalem Peacebuilders (JPB) and the American Friends of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem (AFEDJ), that have profound ministries in our Holy Land working for peace and justice among all the peoples of the land. Learn more about their work by going to their websites: to see how young people are making a difference and to to see how education and healthcare are being made available to all the people of the Holy Land. Go to to watch vidoes of our bishops and others who have traveled to the Holy Land and hear about 5

their experiences. Consider a Lenten discipline of learning more about the land where Jesus walked and taught, lived and died. Pray for peace in Jerusalem and for all the peoples of our Holy Land. Friday Lenten Soup Suppers and Program P L E A S E G O D I W A N T T O S E E L I K E J E S U S COME AND SEE: Can a Lenten Discipline be fun? Movie nights with Jesus Come and join us for a warming soup supper (or pizza) and participate in a Lenten adventure, viewing through different film offerings ways to see ourselves, our world and others through the eyes of Jesus. Have a little discussion, a little reflection, and a lot of fun. Here s what s in store: March 17 Movie The Visitor March 24 Nooma videos Rain & Noise March 31 Movie Up with pizza! April 7 - Taizé Worship following supper. A calming, sacred space will be created in the sanctuary; simple songs of prayer will be sung or chanted; Sacred Scripture will be read and we will be together in the quiet, continuing to walk in faith with Jesus! 6

Each night begins at 6:30 p.m. Join us and invite a friend! All ages are welcomed. Reaching Out Throughout Lent There is a Lenten resource from Bread for the World available for families to use at home a tent card that contains readings, prayers and actions to help you observe a holy Lent remembering those who struggle to have food each day. The tent card first week s prayer is: O God, Jesus suffered all the temptations and trials of human life so that we might be freed from all the forces of evil. May we be instruments of your love for all people, especially those who are without enough to eat. Amen. Take a tent card to use at your dinner table. On Saturday, March 25, Trinity will prepare lunches for Lunch in the Park, beginning at 11 a.m. in the Parish Hall. At 1 p.m. we leave for Bushnell Park for the Church by the Pond service of Holy Eucharist. This is church being taken to the people every Saturday of the year, held outside close to Bushnell Park s carousel regardless of weather. Linda will celebrate, and after the service the lunches we bring are distributed to Hartford s hungry and poor. All ages are welcomed to help prepare and to serve, as a special way of reaching out during Lent. Trinity is part of this ministry quarterly. See the signup sheet that will be in the Narthex close to this date. 7

Happening Weekend A weekend for teenagers presented by teenagers. Camp Washington, March Happening is a spiritual retreat for high school students. Young people will come from all over the state to help plan and implement the weekend. Happening creates a relaxed, fun, and safe environment where youth can share their faith in a Christian atmosphere. It includes a wide range of activities such as active discussion, low-key reflection time, informal musical jam sessions, and high-energy creative activities. A young person serves as Rector and leads the weekend with the help of clergy and a support staff. Happening is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. It begins on Friday, March 24, at 6 p.m. and concludes on Sunday, at 5:30 p.m. after a closing Eucharist. Cost is $150. Scholarships are available by talking to Linda+. Camp Washington Lenten Retreat March 31 April 1 This retreat is titled Making Space for Silence: Exploring Contemplative Prayer and will be presented by Br. Robert L Esperance from the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE) in Cambridge, MA. Check out Camp Washington s website for more information at 8

Knitting as a Spiritual Discipline Consider knitting or crocheting as a spiritual discipline for Lent. Creating something with your hands in the context of prayer can be a way of calming the soul as well as a way of reaching out to someone in a quiet way. We give a prayer shawl to someone as a symbol of God s love and comfort. It may be given for a joyful celebration or in a time when we want someone to know we care deeply about what she/he is going through. There are prayer shawls available for you to give someone just see Ann McAdoo or Linda. There are prayer shawl kits in the Memorial Room that include yarn, needles, and instructions. The kits only need your hands and the warmth of your heart. Consider how the work of your hands might be blessed gifts. We re also continuing to make prayer squares, some of which can be found in the Narthex for you to take or give to someone. These are very easy to make! Ann McAdoo will repeat her Quiet hour offerings during Lent on Wednesdays of March 22, April 12(Holy Week) and April 26 (post Easter) from 7 to 8 p.m. This is a way to enter into silence as one brings knitting or any handiwork or just yourself to sit in silence for an hour. Ann offers a very brief meditation, soothing hot tea, and some quiet background music. It s a way to quiet the busyness of the world around you. All are welcomed. We believe in what? What s the Episcopal Tradition all About Anyway? Have you ever wondered what we Episcopalians believe? What do you know about the history of the Episcopal Church? Could you name an Anglican theologian? Ever wondered what those strange pages in the back of The Book of Common Prayer are all 9

about? If you are interested in exploring what it means to formally join the Episcopal Church, Lent is a good time of thoughtful consideration. If you are interested as an adult to be confirmed or received this year, please speak with Linda for preparation, and we ll set a time that works for us to meet. The Reconciliation of a Penitent Anytime Lent is often a time when individuals choose to make a formal confession of those sins that trouble the conscience. The Reconciliation of a Penitent is a sacramental rite in The Book of Common Prayer found on page 447. It has been said of this rite about those who consider it: all may, some will, none must. The rite is available to all who desire it. If you wish to make this part of your Lenten discipline, please contact Linda+ for more information or to schedule an appointed time. Holy Scripture Study Thursdays 9:30 a.m. & 7:00 p.m. Please remember that there are two Scripture Study/Reflection groups that meet each Thursday at the above hours in the Memorial Room. Anyone is welcomed to join either group for the six weeks of Lent if you choose to add the study of Holy Scripture as a Lenten discipline. We spend time with the readings of the upcoming Sunday Scripture and deepen our understanding of Scripture as the Living Word of God. Please call Theresa ( ) if you have questions or are interested in joining one of these groups. 10
