4 In the previous week s installment of APA and Caring for the Community we saw how the Diocese supports the elderly. Care for the elderly is a major concern, especially here in the state of Florida with so many re rees. This week we are featuring care for low income families Part of the $1,801,000 budget for Catholic Social Services goes towards assis ng the low income families. Considering the cutbacks in state and federal assistance to these families and the escalated values of the Tampa Bay housing market, one of the objec ves of the Courageously Living the Gospel program is to establish 8 10 new loca ons of affordable housing for low, fixed income families or singles. This is your APA dona on at work. Blessed are we APA and Caring for the Community Reflec ons Reflec ons on the Scriptures by Jack Conroy, Ph. D - 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time I. Genesis 2:18-24 The Model for Community Reflec on: We read part of the second Crea on Story from Genesis. Scholars have recognized that the Crea on narra ve is dependant upon Ancient Near East culture; if we read carefully, the author depicts a God who works much like we do...he tried one solu on to the solitude of "the man" and it did not work; so, He tried another, making "woman" (Heb. ish-shah) from "man" (ish). The crucial element, however, is that it is human community that fulfills our des ny. Life with animals was not sufficient. The Creator knew that being-alone was inhuman; and only another human could remedy that defect. This passage introduces perhaps the central theme of all Scripture: the human "experiment" is communal in character; and its success depends upon the recogni on that other humans are not "alien," but are "bone of my bone..." And the model for all community is the dyad-become-monad of two persons who become one being. II. Hebrews 2:9-11 Another Source of "Community" Reflec on: This short reading packs into it two cri cal ideas: 1) While Christ (the same pre-existent Logos who was vehicle of Crea on) assumed a form of a mere human being ("lower than the angels"), He was perfected as a result of His suffering and death. He became one of us, even to embracing death, and was glorified therein. He thus became the "High Priest" who con nues to offer the Perfect Sacrifice. 2) By His assuming our form, by becoming totally and fully human, He became our Brother. The Incarna on becomes that bridge that spans the impossible chasm that separates the Totally Other, the Origin of Being, from the u erly con ngent, fragile and minuscule crea on. Contemporary science, which recognizes our en re solar system as a barely percep ble pimple in one small galaxy, merely reinforces the character of the centrality of the Incarna on. Despite the almost impossibility of finding our planet on a cosmic scale, God cared/cares for us. III. Mark 10:2-16 Community Again Reflec on: We have two stories combined in this reading: The first is a "controversy" story, but which was most likely the standard form of discussion about Torah that existed among learned Jews at the me. Jesus took a stricter posi on about divorce than was normal at the me. The emphasis, I suggest, is the cri cal character of stability within the human community. This does not mean that the human community cannot exist if divorce exists; but divorce introduces stress on the basic unit of society that ought to be avoided. The second story reflects another aspect of "community." Children were the most powerless in that society; and to suggest that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to these affirms the inclusiveness that Christ and His Church insist upon. The same issue is being dealt with: "Community." San Jose Mission Apartments
5 50 Years of Caring for the Community Our Diocese is 50 Years Old. We have made a difference in the world and in our local area. We conbnue to make a difference making the world a bever place for all people as we serve God s people together. On June 17, 2018, the Diocese of St. Petersburg celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment. Bishop Gregory Parkes has chosen the theme of Gra#tude, Joy and Hope for the Diocese s golden jubilee. He is asking all Catholics to remember the past with gra#tude, celebrate the present with joy and look to the future with hope. Below is a featured highlight from the past 50 years recalling the IMPACT we have made in this community we call home. IMPACT ON LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

That is hope: she had it. And that hope has renewed everything. May God grant us that grace. Pope Francis Rev. Kenneth Bonadies, a re red priest of the Archdiocese of Har ord, who has served in this parish, was recently informed by his archdiocese that he has been accused of the sexual abuse of a minor during the 1980s, while in ac ve ministry in Connec cut. Facul es for ministry in the Diocese of St. Petersburg have been removed pending the outcome of the inves ga on. Prayer for Healing Vic ms of Abuse God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by the blood of his cross. Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear our cries as we agonize over the harm done to our brothers and sisters. Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to jus ce and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with jus ce and find peace in you. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. To date more than $270,000 has been paid to the 2018 Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA), bringing us to 74% of our parish goal from 978 families! Following Mary s example, we must shelter hope in our hearts and cul vate that which has been entrusted to us for this genera on and those to follow. Let us Rejoice in Hope and recommit ourselves to Christ s mission of spreading the gospel message to those who seek Him through our gi s to the Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA). Thank you to our parishioners who have par cipated in the APA this year, helping our diocesan church extend Christ s love and mercy. Your generosity is a blessing to those we serve.
