4 APA and Caring for the Community In the previous week s installment of APA and Caring for the Community we saw how the Diocese supports Catholic Educa#on from training our seminarians to tui#on support for our schools and more. This week we are featuring elderly care. Care for the elderly is a major concern, especially here in the state of Florida with so many re#rees. Part of the $1,801,000 budget for Catholic Social Services goes towards the well being of our elderly. One of the objec#ves of the Courageously Living the Gospel celebra#on is to establish 8 10 new loca#ons of affordable housing for low, fixed income families or singles. This is your APA dona#on at work. Blessed are we. ReflecBons ReflecBons on the Scriptures by Jack Conroy, Ph. D - 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time I. Numbers 11:25-29 Enough Sprit for All! ReflecBon: We must read this through the eyes of an ancient person. The contemporary idea of a Win/Win situa#on had not been discovered. The ancient world was one where there were only zero-sum games; if I won, you had to lose. The ancient author even visualized that the Spirit of God was limited, and had to be shared. The evidence for the presence of God=Spirit was that prophesy occurred. When two persons who were not physically present with the seventy spoke in the same manner, people objected, since they had to have less Spirit if the persons not present received some. Jealousy was natural at that #me. Moses, however, saw the larger picture, and while not being explicit, realized that the Spirit of the Lord was not limited; it didn t run out if it was shared. Indeed, we bap#zed are called to be prophets, to bring about God s presence in a world that is some#mes hos#le and alien. II. James 5:1-6 A PropheBc ProclamaBon ReflecBon: This sec#on has the flavor of the great Old Testament prophets, like Hosea or Amos. Again, St. James depicts the counter-cultural character of the early church in its artude towards what was then (and is now) considered value? The central issue is, In what do you place your trust? The tradi#onal answer has been, Wealth provides security, so I will act to acquire as much as I can. This is also the contemporary American /Global Economic answer. Now the economic system at the #me this was wri?en was significantly different than ours. There were two classes: the #ny group who held poli#cal economic and religious power, who also controlled virtually all the wealth, and the huge propor#on of the masses. Hence, anyone who had wealth was necessarily an oppressor. While our economic system is different, the ques#on of What do you trust in this world? is s#ll valid. We answer not by words, but by how we act every single day. III. Mark 9:38-43, 45, Once again: What is valuable? ReflecBon: We see the same perspec#ve in this Gospel reading as we saw in Numbers above. Jesus and Moses realized that there is no limit to the ac#vity of the Spirit. Both sets of followers applied the normal social perspec#ve: there is a limit on all goods, including the benefits of the Spirit. Jesus offered the same view that Moses did. But the story shi3s to the issues of what is truly valuable. It is not necessary to presume a contemporary view of heaven to understand the alterna#ves. The central issue is, What is it that we hold on to in this life? Physical health and wholeness is certainly a value; but it is not the overriding value. And what is Sin? St. James said it above: if one acts out of un-love, if one focuses one s life on self-aggrandizement, ignoring others or sacrificing the good of others to our own benefit, one creates one s own Gehenna.

5 50 Years of Caring for the Community Our Diocese is 50 Years Old. We have made a difference in the world and in our local area. We conbnue to make a difference making the world a beyer place for all people as we serve God s people together. On June 17, 2018, the Diocese of St. Petersburg celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment. Bishop Gregory Parkes has chosen the theme of Gra#tude, Joy and Hope for the Diocese s golden jubilee. He is asking all Catholics to remember the past with gra#tude, celebrate the present with joy and look to the future with hope. Below is a featured highlight from the past 50 years recalling the IMPACT we have made in this community we call home. IMPACT ON ELDERLY

6 Religious EducaBon Adult Faith FormaBon Good Samaritan Mission School Our Rite of Chris#an Ini#a#on of Adults group will consider the mystery of faith this week, an appropriate place to begin a journey for adults who want to become Catholic. As Catholics, we understand faith to be a gi3 from God easier felt than explained. And so we will discuss and ques#on what faith means and how we recognize it when we meet at 7 p.m. Monday in Room 1 of the John Bosco Center. In 2004, Father Frank helped to establish the Good Samaritan mission school in Uganda. Over 200 students a?end the school. Given that these children are receiving an elementary educa#on, financial assistance is urgently needed to keep the program running. Your generous support will supply a child with tui#on fees, school supplies, a uniform and lunch every day. You may volunteer to sponsor a child for $300 a year or $100 a trimester. If you are interested, contact Ellen in the RE office. ConfirmaBon Students This week we begin the Inquiry Period of RCIA with adults who want to become Catholic or are thinking about it. The first mee#ng for Confirma#on will be on either October 7 at 1:00 p.m. or October 10 at 6:00 p.m. in Padua Hall. Please keep an eye on your for more informa#on. We con#nue to invite anyone who is interested to join us. We meet from 7-8:30 p.m. Mondays, with breaks for holidays. Brochures in the pews have more informa#on. There is no cost or obliga#on. Daughter of a King Challenge Girls Retreat RCIA prepares young people and adults who have not been bap#zed to become Catholic and to enter full communion with the Church at the Great Easter Vigil Mass on April 20, We also assist adults who already are bap#zed to make their confirma#on. They may join our RCIA sessions or prepare independently, depending on individual faith experiences and prac#ces. Adult confirma#ons at Espiritu Santo Parish are planned for Dec. 9, March 17 and May 25. At RCIA we discuss many aspects of our Catholic faith and tradi#ons, from the love and mysteries of Christ to the grace of the Sacraments, the liturgy of the Church and more. Anyone with ques#ons may contact Deacon Steven Girardi in the parish office at (727) , or by at deaconsteven@espiritusanto.cc Join us on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 8-5 p.m. for the Challenge girls retreat. All girls grades 5-8 are invited for a day of discovery as we seek the truth about what it means to be truly beau#ful, and learn who we are as daughters of Christ. To register go to the parish website or contact Lauren at lauren.e.gramlich@gmail.com Middle School Youth Event On Friday, September 28 from 6-8 p.m. we will meet at Philippe Park for a great event to learn more about God s Crea#on. 8 Stewardship & Family Life 2018 APA SHORTFALL Thank You to the generous 969+ families that have returned gi s and pledges in support of the 2018 Annual Pastoral Appeal. Truly a me to Rejoice in Hope. Every year we are given this opportunity to transform lives. By par cipa ng we are able to experience something bigger than what we ourselves or our parish could do on its own. It is very upli ing to see that its not how much we have here at Espiritu Santo but how much we give. There are several hundred families who gave last year but not yet this year. Perhaps this past winter you were unable to give. Now, 9 months later maybe things have changed for the be er. If not, diocesan and parish ministries are here to help. Right now with over 969 families involved we have collected $254,000 but s ll are $110,000 short of our $364,000 assessment. If you have not yet made a gi or pledge, on behalf of our parish please prayerfully consider a contribu on using the return envelope in Fr. Len s le er sent to households last week.
