4 Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God January 1st Mother of God Pray For Us Why is this feast so important for us? Why do we need to gather for prayer and Eucharist? In the first reading, we find the ancient prayer of blessing which God gave to Moses to hand on to Aaron and his sons: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you. The Lord lia up his countenance upon you and give you peace (Num 6:22-27). There is no more than the beginning of a new year to hear these words of blessing: they will accompany our journey through the year opening up before us. They are words of strength, courage and hope...a hope that has its founda@on precisely in God s blessing, a blessing which contains the greatest message of good wishes there can be; and this is the message which the Church brings to each of us today. The message of hope contained in this blessing was fully realized in a woman, Mary, who was des@ned to become the Mother of God, and she gave to this world her flesh and blood...the Prince of Peace. Vigil Masses, December 31-4:00, 5:30 & 7:00 p.m. Holy Day Masses, January 1-7:00, 8:30, 10:15 a.m. & 12:15 p.m. Scripture Reflec%ons Reflec%ons on the Scriptures by Jack Conroy, Ph. D - The Epiphany of the Lord I. Isaiah 60:1-6 Epiphany means "Making Manifest" Reflec%on: The Prophet here addresses those who returned from the Exile in Babylon; he sees the resurgence of the Kingdom under God. No@ce how oaen the "Glory" of God is men@oned. To an ancient Hebrew, the "Glory of God" was almost something tangible, almost separable from God Himself. (cf: Exodus 33:22, Ezekiel 3:23, 9:3,10:4). It was a visible manifesta@on of the Presence of God. The Prophet sees this manifesta@on in the restored Jerusalem, which will draw everyone in the world to it. At this season, we see the Glory of God, His manifest Presence, in the person of Jesus Christ. And MaVhew alludes to this reading when he describes the Magi as bringing gias of gold and incense. II. Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6 How God reveals Himself Reflec%on: This short sec@on of the lever emphasizes the direct character of the source of St. Paul's gospel; the content of this gospel was that the addressees, Gen@les in what is now southwestern Turkey, was that they were not "foreigners, aliens" but that they were part of the People of God and part of His household. It is precisely this openness through Jesus Christ that was unknown in prior days, but is now known through the apostles and the new "prophets" of the church. Remember, the ancient Prophets were God-filled persons who proclaimed the way of the Lord. To what extent are we, ordinary human beings, called to be "prophets" ourselves? The essence of a prophet is vastly more the expression of Witness to the Word than foretelling the future. In this sense, our Bap@sm requires that we ourselves become prophets. III. MaRhew 2:1-12 Gen%le, Pagan Kings Recognized His Kingship Reflec%on: This is one of the most popular parts of the Na@vity narra@ves, the visit to the Christ Child of the Magi, or Wise Men from the East. Most importantly, we understand that they were Gen@les (prefiguring the mostly Gen@le church) and that they recognized, in accordance with Ancient Tradi@ons, that when Great Men were born, signs appeared in the Heavens, like a new Star. This story is not one for scien@fic evalua@on, because it is not wriven to teach astrophysics. But it is wriven so that we might understand the message the Evangelist had to express: that the most powerful personages of the Ancient World acknowledged the value of the infant; that King Herod, represen@ng the hos@le powers of greed, lust for power and bloodthirs@ness, was threatened by this infant child. Herod stands for elements in our world that touch us daily. OAen, we don't even realize that when we are manipula@ve of other persons, when we put economics in front with our children, when we injure another's good name with gossip, we are followers of Herod, and would subvert the Good News brought by the Child. This reading is not about "History;" it is about symbols that are as valid today as then.

8 Religious EducaCon Adult Faith FormaCon Merry Christmas There will be NO class from December 23 to January 12. We will return to class the week of January 13. Have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year with your family! For Catholics, new year celebrafons come not once, but twice, each year. This weekend we prepare for coming of the 2019 calendar year as we close out 2018, reflecfng on the past and looking forward to the future. In November, we celebrated the Church s new liturgical year at Advent, leading us to Christmas with great hope and anfcipafon of the coming of Jesus Christ God with us into our hearts and our lives. Youth Holiday BouCque Thank you to everyone who supported the middle school youth by either donafng to the holiday boufque or donafng money for items. The students had a wonderful Fme and through your generosity they were able to raise over $1500. This money will go to help out a child who is less fortunate than themselves and then to an event of their choice. Thank you so much! We owen approach these new years, these new beginnings, with a fisYul of resolufons and good intenfons. It is an appropriate Fme to consider the ways our adult Catholic faith enriches us and sustains us. And, if we listen carefully, perhaps we are being called to a fuller, more acfve parfcipafon in our church. For instance, you may decide this year to assist at Mass as a minister of Holy Communion, a lector reading scripture, a hospitality minister or in the choir. Or you may choose less visible ministries such as caring for the church environment, cleaning the Mass linens and vessels, or placing material in the pews. We have communifes as diverse as the men or women of Espiritu Santo, funeral ministry and the Knights of Columbus. Others do charitable outreach through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or serving meals at Pinellas Hope. Or you might volunteer at our school or as a catechist in our religious educafon program. Contacts for many ministries are in the weekly bullefn, or you may call the parish office for informafon. Peace to all and have a blessed New Year.
