The subscription rate is $15.00 per year. You can purchase one, two or a three year subscription. We ask that if you are interested, please fill out the envelope with your payment and put it in the collection basket as soon as possible. Convent Feast Day On Tuesday September 30 at 6:00 pm, a vesper service will be held at the convent to celebrate the patron feast day of the convent, The Protection of the Theotokos. There will be a social following Study Course on The Psalms Please submit your registration forms asap if you are planning to attend the study course on the Psalms. The course will alternate between St. George parish and St. Mary parish in Ambridge and it is scheduled from 7:00pm 8:00pm every Thursday. The class will start in Ambridge, not Aliquippa as previously announced. You can notify me by phone at or on the back of the bulletin. St. Titus Spaghetti Dinner St. Titus Roman Catholic church in Aliquippa is have a spaghetti dinner on Wednesday Sept. 17th from 12 Noon until 6:30 pm. Dinner includes choice of homemade spaghetti, gnocchi, meatballs, dinner salad and Roll. Adults $8.00 and children under age 12 $5.50. Take outs are available by calling The Universal Exaltation of the Holy Cross September 14 To honor the Cross, to raise it up, to sing of Christ's victory: does this not mean, above all, to believe in the Crucified One and to believe that the Cross is a sign of staggering defeat? For only because it is a defeat, and only to the measure it is accepted as defeat, does the Cross become victory and triumph. No, Christ did not enter the world to win outward victories. He was offered a kingdom, but refused. And at the very moment of his betrayal to death, He said: "Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?" (Mt 26:53). Yet, Christ was never more a king than when He walked to Golgotha carrying his own cross on his shoulders while the hate-filled and mocking crowd surrounded him. His kingship and power were never more obvious than when Pilate brought him before the crowd, dressed in purple, condemned

3 to a criminal's death, a crown of thorns on his head, and Pilate telling the raging mob: "Behold your king." Only here can the whole mystery of Christianity be, for Christianity's victory resides within the joyful faith that here, through seen this rejected, crucified and condemned man, God's love began to illumine the world and a kingdom was opened which no one has power to shut. Each of us, however, must accept Christ and receive him with all our heart, all our soul, and all our hope. Otherwise, outward victories are all meaningless. Perhaps we needed this outward defeat of the Christian world. Perhaps we needed poverty and rejection to purge our faith of its earthly pride and of its trust in outward power and victory, to purify our vision of the Cross of Christ, which is raised high above us even when neither we nor the world can see it. In spite of everything, the Cross is still elevated, exalted and triumphant. "The Cross is the beauty of the universe." For in whatever darkness people find themselves, and however great the outward triumph of evil in this world, the heart still knows and hears the words, "Take courage, I have overcome the world." Last call for Flu Shot clinic in Ambridge!! St. Mary in Ambridge is hosting a flu shot clinic on Sunday September 28 from 11:00 1:00. ECF NEWS Eastern Christian Formation: First in the Archeparchy Go out into the highways and hedges, and make people come in, so that My house may be filled. Luke 14:23 Catechetical Sunday, Next Sunday! This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 21, 2014, and will focus on the theme "Teaching About God's Gift of Forgiveness." Those whom the community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. Fr. Jim will bless the catechists on Next Sunday and present them with a certificate of commission as catechist. Helpful Hints for Our New ECF Year Parents (and grandparents!): Your children s Religious Education began at Baptism, is continued at home, and will be nourished and strengthened through our ECF program. Our efforts in the catechetical program will succeed if they are reinforced at home by: Daily prayer it s up to parents/guardians to teach their children the basic prayers and to make them comfortable with praying. Grace before meals, an icon corner, and bedtime prayers are wonderful traditions that should be part of every Byzantine Catholic home. Look for prayers on our ECF News page in the coming weeks. Reinforcement discuss what your children are learning in Sunday School. Walk them through the church calendar and discuss the feasts and fasts of the Church as they occur. There s a wealth of information on our Parish wall calendar which every family should have and display. Good Example the Byzantine Catholic faith will be real and credible for your children if they see you practicing it, by prayer, fasting, attendance at Liturgy and acts of charity. The best example you can give your children while they learn about their faith is to attend our adult faith formation* and continue your own education. Adult Education (on the Psalms) begins Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 PM at St. George. Regular Attendance regular attendance of Divine Liturgy along with Sunday school is a very important step in a child s path of Christian faith. If Sunday school is treated as something important, it WILL be something important. Please make the effort to bring your child to Sunday school every Sunday. Do you know anyone who may be interested in or benefit from our ECF program? If so, please pick up a NEWLY REVISED informational flyer in the center. What to bring to ECF class: YOURSELF! Train up a child in the way he should go and even when he is old, he will not depart from it. ~ Proverbs 22:6 Be sure to attend Faith formation for Adults!
