Pott, conductor WALKING WITH PURPOSE BECOME AN ALTAR SERVER! Registration What does an Altar Server do? The primary role of the altar server is to assist the priest in the celebration of the liturgy and to be an example to the congregation by actively participating in the liturgy. Servers carry the cross and the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the alter, carry the incense and censor, help during the preparation of the gifts, wash the priest s hands, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary. We are always in need of more altar servers. As long as a child has received their first communion, they can be trained to serve. If you or your family members are interested in joining this beautiful ministry of altar serving at St. Catherine s, please our altar server coordinator, Connie Murljacic, at cmurljac@gmail.com or Deacon Renato Berzolla at lux1@aol.com. 2ndAnnouncement Megan Cebulski and Jeffrey Hannigan Have Made a Promise of Marriage Walking with Purpose is a Catholic women s Bible study that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ by offering personal study and small group discussion that link our everyday challenges and struggles with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church. The Walking with Purpose parish program at St. Catherine of Siena is introducing a new 22-week session for Two courses will be offered. Opening Your Heart, the foundational course, is designed for women who are new to WWP. We welcome past participants and invite new women to join us! Discovering Our Dignity will also be offered, a study of women in the bible, which will draw us into a deeper relationship with Jesus and show how much Christ loves us. We will meet Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. beginning October 5 through April with breaks for holidays & school vacations. Free childcare is available! The Religious Education Office hours are Monday Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A CATECHIST! Jesus called people to action. Jesus asked people to commit, to decide and "Come follow me." Teach the Lord s Word to our children. We will stand with you and help you. Catechists are needed in all grades 1-8. WHY DO PRIESTS WEAR A WHITE COLLAR? The white collar or Roman collar dates back to the 15th century when priests placed linen or cotton collars over their outer clothing to be easily distinguished. This evolved into the collar we see on most priests today when wearing their black clerics. According to the USCCB, Outside liturgical functions, a black suit and Roman collar are the usual attire for priests. When wearing a white collar, it means he s on duty to give blessings, offer counsel, and administer Sacraments. He is closer to the Father than anyone has ever been or ever will be. In fact, he is one with the Father. Jesus is both God and man. Jesus assures us that he is "gentle and humble of heart." This gentleness is not weakness, but the strength to accept us as we are, as well as the strength to help and save us. Jesus tells us that we are to be like him in this gentleness and humility. This does not mean being a pushover. It means being patient with and respectful to others, being a peacemaker, as Jesus was. It means accepting others as they are and trying to help them become even better Question of the Week: Praise God for the blessings he has given you. Family Discussion Questions for the Gospel What does being humble mean? (Hint: The word humble comes from the Latin word humus, meaning "earth." What do we mean when we say someone is "down to earth"? That is what humility is! It is the opposite of snobby, and a great compliment. Why?) How will you be humble today?
