We commemorate the last day of the physical presence of the risen Christ amongst his disciples; and to honor this presence, to honor the Resurrection once more, the church on this Wednesday repeats the service for Easter Sunday in its entirety. And now we have come to the fortieth day after Easter, the Thursday on which the Church celebrates the feast of the Ascension. Three lessons from the Old Testament are read at vespers for the Ascension, on the Wednesday evening. The first lesson (Isa. 2:2-3) speaks of a mountain: It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established in the top of the mountains and all nations By A Monk of the Eastern Church shall flow until it. Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord. This alludes to the Mount of Olives, from which Jesus ascended to his Father. The second lesson (Isa. 62:10-63; 3, 7-9) was chosen because of the following words: Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people. In his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them. Jesus, ascending to heaven, opens the gates to his people, he prepares a way for them, he carries them and raises them up with him. The third lesson (Zech. 14:1, 4, 8-11) also speaks of the mountain which was the scene of Jesus final triumph: Behold the day of the Lord cometh. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east. And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem. Continued on Page 2

2 The chants at matins for the Ascension are already filled with allusions to the Spirit, the Comforter, whom Jesus will send. Ascension is the prelude to Pentecost. At the liturgy, the beginning of the Book of the Acts (1:1-12) is read. Jesus, after a last meeting with His apostles, is taken up, and disappears in a cloud. The gospel for the liturgy (Luke 24:36-53) takes up the account of events from the first appearance of the risen Jesus to the assembled disciples and continues with it right up to the Ascension itself. It is rare, if one has lived through the joy of Easter time sincerely, that one does not experience a certain constriction of the heart when the day of the Ascension comes. We know perfectly well that it is one of the very great Christian feasts, and yet, despite ourselves, it seems like a parting, a separation, and that after it, our Lord is not with us in quite the same way any longer. The disciples did not react like this. They could have been overwhelmed with grief, but, on the contrary, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy. We, too, can try and enter into this joy of the Ascension. Why does the Ascension bring joy to Christians? First of all, the glory of our Lord must be very precious to us, and the Ascension is the crown of his earthly mission. He has accomplished on earth the whole mission which he had received from the Father. It is to the Father that his whole being reaches out. Now he will receive from the Father the welcome that his victory over sin and death a victory gained so grievously has merited for him. Now he will be glorified in heaven. The glory and the desire of our Lord are surely more important to us than the sort of perceptible consolations that we might receive from his presence. Let us know how to love our Lord enough to rejoice in his own joy. Then the Ascension marks God s acceptance of the Son s whole work of reparation. The Resurrection was the first dazzling sign of this acceptance, and Pentecost will be the last sign. The cloud which today envelopes Jesus and ascends with him to heaven represents the smoke of the sacrifice rising from the altar to God. The sacrifice is accepted, and the victim is admitted to God s presence where it will continue to be offered in an eternal and heavenly manner. The work of our salvation has been accomplished and is blessed. Jesus does not return to his Father in isolation. It was the incorporeal Logos which came down among men. But today it is the Word made flesh, both true God and true man, who enters the kingdom of heaven. Jesus brings into it the human nature which he had assumed. He opens the door of the kingdom to humanity. As if by proxy, we take possession of the benefits which are offered and made possible to us. [God] hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus. There are places destined for us in the kingdom, if we are faithful. Our presence is desired and awaited. The Ascension makes thoughts of heaven more immediate, more actual to us. Do we think of our permanent home often enough? For most Christians, life in heaven is no more than a supplement of which they have but a very hazy notion to life on earth. Life in heaven is seen somewhat as a postscript, an appendix, to a book whose text is formed by earthly life. But it is the opposite which is true. Our earthly life is but the preface to the book. Life in heaven will be its main text, and this text is endless. To make use of another image, our earthly life is but a tunnel, narrow, dark and very short which opens onto a magnificent, sunlit landscape. We think too much of what our life now is. We do not think enough of what it will be. Men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him. At matins for this feast, we sing: We who live in this world, let us feast like the angels. That is to say: let us open our minds more to the angels, and try to enter into their feelings, experiencing something of what they experience when the Son Continued on Page 3 2 Page

3 returns to the Father; let us go ahead in spirit and be near the Blessed Virgin Mary and the glorified saints, who will be our true co-citizens: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Our lives would be transformed if, from now on, we threw our hearts over the barrier, beyond this world, into the kingdom where is found not only our own true good but also the good of those whom we love. When the disciples had been separated from Jesus, they remained full of hope, for they knew that they were to receive the Spirit. [He] commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father. The cloud surrounds Jesus, but this cloud is colored already by the fire of Pentecost. Jesus, in going away from us, leaves in us an attitude which is one not of regret, but rather of joyous and trustful awaiting. Jesus departure has been both an act of benediction and an act of adoration, the one corresponding to the other: And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. This is what the feast of the Ascension should be to us. If Jesus withdraws with an act of blessing, and if we adore Jesus as he withdraws (we speak figuratively), we will get up filled with new power which comes from this adoration, this blessing and we, like the apostles, will return with great joy. Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Christ is risen! I am writing to ask for your prayers and financial support for my upcoming Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) trip to Bukoba, Tanzania. Ever since pursuing a career in health care, I have felt called to serve with OCMC on a medical mission trip. As a current physician assistant student, I have been blessed with the opportunity to join a group of medical professionals who desire to use their vocation in order to aid the people of Bukoba. Through this opportunity I will be able to grow in health care knowledge and use my talents to serve those in need. My work in Tanzania this May will last for two weeks at the Orthodox Health Clinic in Bukoba. This trip s mission is to show Christ s love by offering holistic health care outreach to the Church of Tanzania and the surrounding region. Goals of the trip include offering basic health care education to patients as well as providing medical relief to those individuals who are not able to receive aid through the government. By the grace of God I will travel to Tanzania to participate in this mission work, and ask for your loving prayers and financial support throughout this process. Please pray for the work I am about to participate in, my team members, for those working to make the team a success, and for the people my team is going to serve. I also need to raise $1,370 to fund my work and stay in Tanzania as well as $1,876 for airfare. Contributions are tax deductible and can be made online at or checks can be made out to OCMC with Sophia Raptis Tanzania on the memo line. I will collect all donations and forward them to the Mission Center directly. I would be grateful for and humbled by your loving prayers and generosity. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about our Orthodox Christian Mission Center or this medical trip to Tanzania. I look forward to sharing my experience with you upon my return. Let them do good, that they may be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share (1 Timothy 6:18) In Christ, Sophia Raptis, PA-S raptissoph@gmail.com Page

6 Parish Council President's Message by Andy Stefanopoulos Χριστός Aνέστη!!! Aληθoς Aνέστη!!! How many times have we heard those words? Like most of us, who as small infants were baptized in the Greek Orthodox faith, we probably remember hearing our mothers and fathers say those words at a certain time of the year. It seemed to be such a beautiful way to greet people. Having grown up in a German Catholic neighborhood, I never saw our neighbors greet each other with words anything like Χριστός Aνέστη. Since the first language I learned from my immigrant parents was Greek, I soon knew how to translate the words to Christ is Risen and Truly He is Risen. Unfortunately, Holy Trinity (our Church on Vine Street) did not have a Sunday School such as we have today and it was some time before I fully understood the true meaning of those words. While the birth of Jesus Christ was actually miraculous, it is the resurrection and transformation of Christ which is truly the foundation of our Christian faith. Our recent observation of Lent and the services and liturgies of Holy Week leading up to the Great and Holy Pascha inspired and instilled in us, with deep conviction, the meaning of these words. These words, reiterated daily during Pentecost, continue to fill our spirit with joy and thankfulness with our Greek Orthodox family at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas. Let us keep the words close to our hearts, always, throughout the year to remember: Christ is risen from the dead, Trampling down death by death, And upon those in the tombs Bestowing life! SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL Cara Chryssovergis Summer is right around the corner. The last day of SCS classes is May 18. We will take our annual SCS class picture. God, however, doesn't go on summer vacation. Please take the opportunity to enjoy the quiet months of worship with your family. SCS classes will resume on September 7. We have had a manageable year; however, our staff was limited because of a number of open teaching or assistant positions. The ability to effectively manage the classroom goes up exponentially in the classrooms where we have teaching teams consisting of two or more teachers/assistants. For next year s staff, we are in need of assistant teachers for Pre- School, and grades 4, 6, and 8. Please consider this opportunity to serve your parish and make our SCS program exceptional. St. Theophan the Recluse said, "Of all the Holy works, the education of children is the most holy." Nativity Program Director is another area for which to consider volunteering time and talent to our parish. SCS has performed relatively the same program for the past nine years. It is time to add something new or different to this beautiful event. SCS needs one or two individuals who are interested in giving the Nativity program a new life to take over as the director. The Nativity Program Director would work with Cara Chryssovergis, SCS Director and Janice Kellaris, Choir Director; but they would have artistic freedom to improve the script and score wherever possible. This is an amazing opportunity for someone with an interest in music or theatre to make a difference to our SCS program. Although our food pantry contest will come to a close with the end of SCS, there is still a need to keep the food pantry stocked. Hunger also does not go on summer vacation, so please continue to provide donations all summer. March brought the total items donated by our students to over 3000! The high school class is well ahead of the rest with over 600 items; however, there is a close race for second place between kindergarten, 1 st grade and 7 th grade with each class approaching 500 items! We are making a difference in this community! If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer your time and talents, contact Cara Chryssovergis at or htsnscs@gmail.com. 8 Page

10 HOLY TRINITY-ST. NICHOLAS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH ENDOWMENT FUND Last month the value of our Endowment crossed over the $900,000 mark. When the fund was started in the mid 1990 s, the goal of $1,000,000 must of seemed daunting. Today, the goal is within reach and the mission of the fund to provide a perpetual funding mechanism for the Church s ministries and capital improvements can begin to be met. The Fund s investment policy and by-laws prohibit distributions until the account s principal balance exceeds $1 million. At that time, up to 4% of the total can be used to fund projects. For example, if the Fund balance were $1 million at the beginning of the year, $40,000 could be accessed to fund Church ministries or capital improvements, such as covering part of the roof replacement cost. You can honor your loved ones by donating to the Endowment Fund. A leaf or boulder with their name inscribed on it will be placed on our Legacy Tree. Pledge cards are available next to the Legacy Tree across from the bookstore. For more information about gifting options to the Endowment Fund, please contact Nick Georgiton at or the Church Office at "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21 Kroger Community Rewards Program: Have you renewed or enrolled your loyalty card? 11 Christos Anesti! This month we find ourselves in the midst of the Paschal season. The memories the hymns and words and joy most of all of the Resurrection service should still be fresh in our minds. Focusing on the words, other groups may wonder what will be preached at their Easter services, but Orthodox Christians rely on a message composed some 1600 years ago to convey the rich meaning of our Lord s Resurrection. By appointing the Paschal Homily of St. John Chrysostom to be read each year, the Church beautifully proclaims that Christ is risen and Death is overthrown. We are reminded in the same Homily that the festive joy of our Master belongs to us regardless of when we begin our labors of faith, whether at the first hour, the third, sixth, ninth or even at the eleventh hour. The Lord accepts the last just as He accepts the first. While the reward for being last is great in terms of personal salvation, Stewardship is another matter. Yes, contributions made at the end of the year help support our Parish just as much as those made at the beginning, and yes, they represent the same faithful response. However, no one should think that St. John is suggesting a funding model for the Church. Specifically, contributions made earlier, rather than later, are more valuable for the financial stability they provide. Pledges also help in this regard as a planning tool, so that the Parish may prudently budget the activities that witness to the Resurrected Christ. The Parish s ministries are ultimately made more effective when we arrive earlier, not later, to labor in the Lord s vineyard. The Stewardship Committee hopes that the joy of this Pascha will continue to fill your heart and mind until this time next year. We also pray that this joy leads you to make a financial commitment to the Parish if you have not already done so. When the Parish Council began this capital expense drive, the hope was that we would raise all of the funds needed by the end of Five months into 2014 and we have yet to raise half of the necessary funds. We have borrowed $120,000 from our line of credit, which is $70,000 more than was planned for in our budget. We normally pay off our line of credit with proceeds from the Panegyri. The Parish Council continues to ask each Parish household to consider a donation of $250 towards the remaining cost of $76,000 for the repairs. We appreciate your concern and your support.
