1 The Voice Volume : 10 Number : 10 Month : October Prayer is the basis of our Christian life, the source of our experience of Jesus as the Risen Lord. Yet how few Christians know how to pray with any depth! For most of us, prayer means little more than standing in the pews for an hour or so on Sunday morning or perhaps reciting, in a mechanical fashion, prayers once learned by rote during childhood. Our prayer life - and thus our life as Christians - remains, for the most part, at this superficial level. THE CHALLENGE OF ST. PAUL But this approach to the life of prayer has nothing to do with the Christianity of St. Paul, who urges the Christians of first century Thessalonica to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5:1). And in his letter to Rome, the Apostle instructs the Christian community there to "be constant in prayer" (Rom. 12:12). He not only demands unceasing prayer of the Christians in his care, but practices it himself. "We constantly thank God for you" (1 Thess. 2:13) he writes in his letter to the Thessalonian community; and he THE JESUS PRAYER BY FATHER STEVEN TSICHLIS comforts Timothy, his "true child in the faith" (1 Tim. 1:2) with the words: "Always I remember you in my prayers" (2 Tim. 1:3). In fact, whenever St. Paul speaks of prayer in his letters, two Greek words repeatedly appear: PANTOTE, which means always; and ADIALEPTOS (adialeptos), meaning without interruption or unceasingly. Prayer is then not merely a part of life which we can conveniently lay aside if something we deem more important comes up; prayer is all of life. Prayer is as essential to our life as breathing. This raises some important questions. How can we be expected to pray all the time? We are, after all, very busy people. Our work, our spouse, our children, and our school - all place heavy demands upon our time. How can we fit more time for prayer into our already overcrowded lives? These questions and the many others like them which could be asked set up a false dichotomy in our lives as Christians. To pray does not mean to think about God in contrast to thinking The Monthly Newsletter of Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church V. Rev. Fr. William Cassis, Proistamenos Rev. Fr. 2 THE SCRIPTURAL ROOTS OF THE JESUS PRAYER The Scriptures give the Jesus Prayer both its concrete form and its theological content. It is rooted in the Scriptures in four ways: 1. In its brevity and simplicity, it is the fulfillment of Jesus' command that "in praying" we are "not to heap up empty phrases as the heathen do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them... (Matt. 6:7-8). 2. The Jesus Prayer is rooted in the Name of the Lord. In the Scriptures, the power and glory of God are present in his Name. In the Old Testament to deliberately and attentively invoke God's Name was to place oneself in his Presence. Jesus, whose name in Hebrew means God saves, is the living Word addressed to humanity. Jesus is the final Name of God. Jesus is "the Name which is above all other names" and it is written that "all beings should bend the knee at the Name of Jesus" (Phil. 2:9-10). In this Name devils are cast out (Luke 10:17), prayers are answered (John 14:13 14) and the lame are healed (Acts 3:6-7). The Name of Jesus is unbridled spiritual power. 3. The words of the Jesus Prayer are themselves based on Scriptural texts: the cry of the blind man sitting at the side of the road near Jericho, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me" (Luke 18:38); the ten lepers who "called to him, Jesus, Master, take pity on us' " (Luke 17:13); and the cry for mercy of the publican, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner" (Luke 18:14). 4. It is a prayer in which the first step of the spiritual journey is taken: the recognition of our own sinfulness, our essential estrangement from God and the people around us. The Jesus Prayer is a prayer in which we admit our desperate need of a Saviour. For "if we say we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves and refusing to admit the truth" (1 John 1:8). THE THREE LEVELS OF PRAYER Because prayer is a living reality, a deeply personal encounter with the living God, it is not to be confined to any given classification or rigid analysis. However, in order to offer some broad, general guidelines for those interested in using the Jesus Prayer to develop their inner life, Theophan the Recluse, a 19th century Russian spiritual writer, distinguishes three levels in the saying of the Prayer: 1. It begins as oral prayer or prayer of the lips, a simple recitation which Theophan defines as prayers' "verbal expression and shape." Although very important, this level of prayer is still external to us and thus only the first step, for "the essence or soul of prayer is within a man's mind and heart." 2. As we enter more deeply into prayer, we reach a level at which we begin to pray without distraction. Theophan remarks that at this point, "the mind is focused upon the words" of the Prayer, "speaking them as if they were our own." 3. The third and final level is prayer of the heart. At this stage prayer is no longer something we do but who we are. Such prayer, which is a gift of the Spirit, is to return to the Father as did the prodigal son (Luke 15:32). The prayer of the heart is the prayer of adoption, when "God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit that cries 'Abba, Father!'" (Gal. 4:6). THE FRUITS OF THE JESUS PRAYER This return to the Father through Christ in the Holy Spirit is the goal of all Christian spirituality. It is to be open to the presence of the Kingdom in our midst. The anonymous author of The Way of the Pilgrim reports that the Jesus Prayer has two very concrete effects upon his vision of the world. First, it transfigures his relationship with the material creation around him; the world becomes transparent, a sign, a means of communicating God's presence. He writes: "When I prayed in my heart, everything around me seemed delightful and marvelous. The trees, the grass, the birds, the air, the light seemed to be telling me that they existed for man's sake, that they witnessed to the love of God for man, that all things prayed to God and sang his praise." Second, the Prayer transfigures his relationship to his fellow human beings. His relationships are given form within their proper context: the forgiveness and compassion of the crucified and risen Lord. 2 P a g e

3 "Again I started off on my wanderings. But now I did not walk along as before, filled with care. The invocation of the Name of Jesus gladdened my way. Everybody was kind to me. If anyone harms me I have only to think, 'How sweet is the Prayer of Jesus!' and the injury and the anger alike pass away and I forget it all." ENDLESS GROWTH "Growth in prayer has no end," Theophan informs us. "If this growth ceases, it means that life ceases." The way of the heart is endless because the God whom we seek is infinite in the depths of his glory. The Jesus Prayer is a signpost along the spiritual journey, a journey that all of us must take. APPENDIX The purpose of this pamphlet is merely to introduce the practice of the Jesus Prayer. The Jesus Prayer cannot be separated from the sacramental life of the Church and asceticism. The following books are recommended for further study: The Art of Prayer edited with an introduction by Kallistos Ware (Faber and Faber: London) 1966 The Power of the Name by Kallistos Ware (SLG Press: Oxford) 1974 The Way of a Pilgrim translated by R. M. French (Seabury Press: New York) 1965 Christ is in our Midst by Father John of New Valaamo (St. Vladimirs' Seminary Press: New York) 1980 The Jesus Prayer by Per-Olof Sjogren (Fortress Press: Philadelphia) 1975 Prayer of the Heart by George A. Maloney (Ave Maria Press: Notre Dame) 1980 Parish Council President's Message by Gus Perdikakis The fall General Assembly of our church community will be Sunday, October 10 th immediately following Divine Liturgy. It is an opportunity for parishioners to learn of the progress of the church and its current financial position. There will also be parish organizations and committee updates and nominations for election of future members of your parish council. The Parish Council has had success in moving the parish forward in many ways and has strived for transparency in keeping everyone informed of our 2010 agenda. At this meeting there will be two important items on the agenda that includes the future plans and strategy of the endowment fund and a by-laws amendment proposal changing quorum requirements for future General Assemblies. As last year we are brightening the General Assembly by electing an honorary chairperson selected from our Sunday Church School and GOYA. There again will be door prizes and refreshments to make your attendance a positive and informative experience. You are asked to consider running for parish council and or serving on a parish committee. You may contact Marcus Chichura, chair of the Governance Committee of your interest by ing mmmchich@yahoo.com or by calling the church office. On behalf of Father Bill, Father Ciprian and Parish Council, I want to extend our thanks and gratitude to Frank Cook our faithful servant for his sponsorship and preparation of the food for this year s annual church picnic. Also to James Kappas, William Buzzy Gaz, and Chris and Loy Jonson for their chairmanship and effort for our annual car raffle. And finally, to James Raptis and his soldiers that comprise the men s ministry for their hard work on facilities maintenance and improvement projects. This initiative has made the church sparkle and resulted in thousands of dollars in cost savings all while enjoying Christian fellowship. These individuals are all excellent examples of leadership in the life of the church and parish. Your opportunity awaits and we encourage you to take part in the growing and thriving experience that is Holy Trinity -St. Nicholas. 3 P a g e

FATHER BILL S RECOMMENDED READING The Art of Prayer by Igumen Chariton of Valamo This is a collection of texts on prayer, drawn from Greek and Russian sources. The spiritual teaching of the Orthodox Church appears here in its classic and traditional form, but expressed in unusually direct and vivid language. The Art of Prayer is concerned in particular with the most frequently used and best loved of all Orthodox prayers the Jesus Prayer. It deals also with the general question What is prayer?, with the different degrees of prayer from ordinary oral prayer to unceasing prayer of the heart, with the dangers of illusion an discouragement, and the need for seclusion and inner peace. Father Chariton, Igumen or Abbot of the Russian Monastery of Valamo, takes his texts chiefly from the letters of Bishop Theophan the Recluse, one of the greatest spiritual guides of nineteenth-century Russia. But he uses many other writers, Greek as well as Russian, and concludes with the teaching given to monks of his own community of Valamo. One reviewer wrote: The book represents the fruits of careful reading of spiritual works over many years of monastic life and it gives a fairly comprehensive record of the spiritual teachings of the Orthodox Church in it is traditional monastic form. This book is available in our Parish Bookstore. We had Fried Chicken and everyone brought something to share. We talked about a few trips coming up. I think everyone had lots of fun. Too much food. We had two more new members join the Club. Welcome Tony and Mary Mokas. We hope you come often and enjoy the company of your many friends. Our sympathy to Tom and Marianthy Mirkos on the passing of Tom s Brother. May his memory be eternal! Our next luncheon will be on October 16 at Church. PHILOPTOCHOS Diane Kevin Thank you to the Philoptochos Board for preparing such a nice dinner for our first meeting held on September 7. We had a very nice crowd, and it was a pleasure to see all of you. We have a few things lined up for this coming year; some are in the works and will be forthcoming, but we are very happy to announce our Philoptochos Prayer Garden Project. Chairperson Philanthy Nicols and garden designer Peter Zaferes met with Father Bill, Gus Perdikakis and the parish council members to discuss the project. The garden will be located in the Bishops Walk and will be a prayer garden, rather than a memorial garden. We want to encourage people to make contributions in honor of happy occasions, i.e., the birth of a child, a baptism, wedding, chrismation, anniversary milestone, as well as memorials. We will be launching a fundraiser to acknowledge donations by selling engraved brick garden pavers. Carol Stefanopoulos, Melanie McNulty and Pauline Kelley will be assisting with this project. We will post monthly updates in The Voice to keep parishioners informed. Our Coats & Quilts and Cell Phones for Soldiers campaigns will officially kick off this month. Thank you to Betsy Pascal for our first donation of a lovely coat, and to Ann Jonson and Emily Sfarnas for cell phone donations. All were brought to our first meeting, so we are off to a good start! Melanie McNulty and Cathy Nadaud are chairing Cell Phones for Soldiers. Thank you both for volunteering to handle this worthy cause in honor of our soldiers and Veterans Day. The National Philoptochos Society has honored Catherine Nadaud with a Certificate of Merit for her years of service and inspiration to our members and our parish 5 P a g e

Our thanks to Melanie McNulty for her continued efforts in organizing the Memory Walk for Alzheimer s, which was held on October 2, For all of your donations, and to all that walked with us, we thank you. We understand that our Parish members, especially those with young families, have many commitments. You can be as involved in Philoptochos as you wish. You can become a Philoptochos steward only, or you can attend our monthly meetings. You can be involved in Philoptochos activities and programs based on your interests and availability. Once you become a member, you will be on our mailing list, choose or in our telephone directory. These communication vehicles are designed to keep you informed and involved to the extent you wish to be involved. I would like to thank my brother Ted McKay for joining and becoming our 90 th member of Philoptochos this year! Yes, men may join Philoptochos and we welcome you! (P.S. you just can t vote, but you can do everything else)! We hope to see everyone at our next meeting, Tuesday October 5 at DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE... Vera Manolakas Many of you may not be aware that as a fund raising project, and to share our Hellenism, our chapter of the Daughters of Penelope offers cooking classes based on home-style Greek cuisine. The most recent class featured traditional summer favorites celebrating summer s bounty. All of the participants came from outside our Church community: of the 18 in attendance, 14 had attended all or most of our previous classes. We d like to share with you an message that we received from one of our new Friends of Penelope ladies to let you know what kind of impact these classes are making: I wanted to pass along a huge THANK YOU!!! for the cooking class yesterday. My mother-in-law and I had a great time and are dying to come back for the class in March. I hope to have my sister-in-law with us then.... I can t tell you how much your organization touched me and my mother-in-law when we were there. The things you do and the way you involve the community is truly unique.... It means so much to see people reaching out to help those organizations that can from time to time get forgotten. I know that you mentioned that at the class that we could join the DOP even if we are not Greek or Orthodox. I have been looking for an organization to join and was wondering what steps I would need to take to be part of your great organization?... Again, thank you so much for all of your time and work to make such a great day... We... are already picking out dates to cook the dishes that we learned for our family. We look forward to seeing you again. Allie We are pleased to announce our fourth Annual Wine Tasting Scholarship Event will be Saturday, October 23, 2010, 7 to 10 PM.
