2 The Voice Volume : 18 Number : 4 Month : April 2018 The Monthly Newsletter of Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church The Joyful Sorrow of Pascha By Metropolitan Hierotheos of Nafpaktos One of the strongest and most expressive words encountered in our tradition is the word "joyful-sorrow" (χαρμολύπη). All things in our life are mixed with sorrow and joy. Life is not a theater with scenery changes, but an experience that is both joyful and sorrowful, where sorrow turns to joy and at the point where joy culminates, sorrow emerges, due to the mortality of our passionate nature. We encounter this word "joyful-sorrow" in the 6th century book of Saint John of Sinai titled The Ladder, where we are urged to acquire "the blessed and joyful sorrow of holy compunction" which can "present you a cleansed offering to Christ" (Step 7). It can be an ascetic experience, but also one of the world, since we all live in the desert of the city, often called Christian society. The word "joyful-sorrow" can be considered synonymous with the word "crucified-risen Pascha" (σταυροαναστάσιμο Πάσχα) which shows how on Great Friday everyone can rejoice in the putting to death of Hades and death, and on the Bright Day, Pascha, there can be sorrow for a beloved person who is being swallowed by death, that hungry beast, which continues to gobble people up and in the present time and split a community of loving persons. One daily lives this experience of "joyful-sorrow" on a personal existential level, within ones family, community, or national space. Lately we are living this on the economic level, because on the one hand we are facing an existential crisis, and on the other hand we are looking forward to the experience of love, affection, solidarity and existential freedom from the enslavement of false ideologies that disorient a thinking person. We hope to experience the truth that a person is not what one has, but has that which is, and this is the glory of our timeless traditions. We also lately experience this in the intense criticism of the Church. No one is unaware that there do exist triggers for such criticism, because various people of the Church, even the great dignified Clergy, do not fully express the ethos and life of ecclesiastical experience. But this criticism also, even the points where the Church bears no responsibility, the Church accepts, like any mother who accepts with love the outbursts of her children, whether responsible or not. The Church is the mother of the Orthodox people, who accepts all the reactions of her children with love, affection and forbearance, offering the caress of familiarity, the smile of loving affection, and the bowels of compassion, as was shown by the Archbishop, the Holy Synod, and the majority of Clergy, who did not want to quarrel with their children. Still, this "joyful-sorrow" appeared this past Holy and Great Week and culminated on Pascha. The Church showed that its wealth is not in salaries and dividends, but in her theology, her culture, her hymnography, her gatherings of worship, which are directed through its timeless tradition. In this Week the Church showed her wealth which is her Bridegroom, who arrived out of "passionate love" to be stripped, humiliated and crucified, without reciprocating in the least, and without uttering a word, and in the end He rose, without fanfare or theatrics, without terrorizing His crucifiers and the guardians of His tomb, Continued on Page 4

We should not shy away from proclaiming the Lord s victory over death to others, Orthodox Christians and non-orthodox Christians alike. Indeed, this is what we believe, this is what we confess, this is our very salvation! 4 Continued from Page 2 without punishing the irresponsible and unjust political power, headed by Pilate, and without being triumphant over His resurrection or pulverizing the religious leaders who pretended piety. Still, the wealth of the Church is the harlot woman, who showed exuberant love to Christ, changing one erotic love for another erotic love, who knew how to love exuberantly, with an overflow of love and works and not in a way of conventional life. Her wealth is also the crucified robber who was able to recognize the divinity within the humiliating Cross and became a great empirical theologian. The Church experiences this crucified-risen life, she lives her own joyful-sorrow, and in this way she guides her children, even the most "unruly". She is still the mother of the people, who bears with pain the pregnancy with her children, and is in pain at their birth, feeds them from her breast, and sacrifices herself for their growth, and sometimes accepts with love and forbearance the tantrums of their pain. The Church resembles the Fools for Christ, who although they were laughed at by all, they lived internally complete and gave of their greatness, even in their extreme obscurity. She lives the apparent weakness of the Crucifixion with the completeness of the Resurrection. With this joyful-sorrow of Pascha, we experience the celebration of the crucified-risen "Pascha the Lord's Pascha", exchanging the embrace of love and sending out greetings to everyone saying: "Christ is Risen, my joy! Panegyri Baking By Eugene Nicholas Last month, we started baking for this year s Panegyri. Each year our baking volunteers produce more than 20,000 pastries. As you might expect this is no easy task and many volunteers are needed. The process involves more than just making the pastries; there is also planning, prep, teaching, cupping and of course clean up. Over the past few years, we have continued to try and make more baking opportunities available to our volunteers who work during the week. This year we have two Saturday baking dates, April 28 th (baklava) and June 2 nd (koulourakia). We will be teaching on both days, so this is an opportunity for our experienced volunteers to pass down their knowledge to the next generation. Our pastries are the most sought after items at the Panegyri. To carry on our tradition of excellence, we must continue to expand and grow our volunteer pool. Below you will find the schedule for all of the remaining baking days along with contact information for this year s pastries chair people. Please join us in continuing to make our Panegyri the most anticipated summer event in Cincinnati. 6 Sisters and Brothers, Parish Council President's Message by Nektarios Papasavvas Holy Week Ayia Evthomatha, and Pascha is here! My favorite time of the year, or more accurately, my favorite journey of the year. A journey of discovery, sacrifice, soul cleansing, and of course, triumph with the Resurrection of Christ; the premier event in our spiritual and theological existence! It begins with the Great Lent; a time of self-reflection, self-awareness, self-discovery, hard spiritual work, fasting, praying and request for forgiveness. This is the time where we take a personal inventory of who we are, what we have done; good or bad, and reflect on how to clean up our souls; how we can show love and compassion to one another; how to forgive each other; how to become worthy to receive and celebrate our Resurrected Jesus Christ. Let s make sure that when we chant the Trisagion Prayer, we have already demonstrated love and forgiveness, before we ask for our own All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, forgive our sins. Master, pardon our transgressions. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for your name s sake. Speaking of self-reflection, discovery and prayer, under the leadership of Philanthy Nichols, our Ladies Philoptochos Society, once again, led the way with the 2018 Lenten Retreat, Establishing Godly Priorities in Changing Times, held on March 10 th. Mother Paula and Sister Christine, from the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania were the event s keynote speakers. What a great event! I am happy to report to you that our Strategic Planning Committee is moving full steam ahead. You might recall that our strategy is focused on 3 Pillars; Engagement, Education, and Outreach, each team led by Peter Rodish, Dimitri Makrozahopoulos and Nick Panagis, respectively. We have now a total of 16 fellow parishioners who stepped up to be part of these 3 teams, to volunteer their skills and time for the future of our Parish. Thank You Team!! However, we are not there yet to maximize effectiveness of each pillar team we need more help. So please, if you are interested in joining this team and be part of our future, come on in; we need you! Looking forward to seeing everybody during Holy Week and Pascha! God Bless and Thank you for all you do! Those that stayed enjoyed them so much. We even had one of our members singing in the group. George Kalomeres is part of the group and has a wonderful voice. Sometimes I forget to thank people for something they did for us. Such as, Georgia Gelis, who always picks up the cake for us. THANKS! We had 12 members that went to see Mama Mia in Indiana on March 1. It was a lot of fun. The singers were wonderful and we had a great lunch. Our next two luncheons will be at Church. In April we will have our Easter lunch prepared by Alex and then in May, we will have R&R Catering. Our sympathy to the family of Mary Skalkos, who passed away this past March. 9 Youth Ministries Youth Update Kalo Pascha! I pray you all and your families have a blessed Holy Week and Pascha. We ve had a very busy Lent here with our youth ministries, and we re looking forward to a prayerful Holy Week. Before reviewing the different ministries, I would like to offer some encouragement to our youth for Holy Week. All of the services throughout the week are wonderfully formative for our youth. On Saturday of Lazarus, after the, we ll work together as a community to fold the palms that will be handed out on Palm Sunday. The Bridegroom services on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night are quiet services full of hymns that prepare us for the rest of the week. On Wednesday, we will offer Holy Unction, a sacrament of our church where the faithful will be anointed for the healing of body and soul. Thursday evening s service, the Matins of Twelve Gospels, is known for being long, but the Gospel readings and hymns tell the whole story of Christ s trial and crucifixion. For Holy Friday, Fr. Mark and I have prepared a letter that asks that students be dismissed for a day of worship at Church. I would love to see you all join us for the three services on Holy Friday that end with the beautiful and joyous Lamentations service, where we process around the church. On Saturday morning, we commemorate Christ s descent into Hades and the breaking of the doors, chains, and locks that bound the dead. That evening, we all come together to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ in the Anastasi service at midnight. I would love to see the altar and the pews packed with youth at all of these services so we can celebrate the Feast of Feasts together. The week isn t complete until we celebrate the Agape Vespers all together on Sunday. Ministry Updates: March was the last of our regularly scheduled Thursday evening HOPE & JOY events for the year. Beginning in April, we will have the start of our Panegyri dance practices on Thursday night. Stay tuned for the announcement of an end-of-year program for our HOPE & JOY, and mark off the week of July for Vacation Church School. Our last HOPE & JOY event talked about self-control and how we practice self-control by fasting during Lent. We also talked about how self-control should not just make us stronger people, but it should help us to treat others more lovingly. In March, we had our annual GOYA Lent Retreat. Thanks so much to all who came out! We had a packed day that started with a service trip to Matthew 25:Ministries in Blue Ash. It was good to not only serve, but to get a tour of their facility and insight into the suffering that exists throughout the world. After that, we returned to the church for a day of discussing the topic Thoughts and Prayers will Save the World. We had activities and lessons that facilitated lots of great discussion. Thank you to all the parents who helped make this a successful day! GOYA officer positions are now open for nominations, and we will have our Taverna Night evening of dancing and fellowship on Saturday, April 14th. Also, we have our monthly fellowship on Sunday, April 22nd after. Our Young Adults had a Lenten Discussion after church on March 18th on the topic of that week s Live the Word YouTube video. 10 Two Orthodox Nuns Facilitate Parish Retreat Establishing Godly Priorities in Changing Times was the theme of our Lenten retreat on Saturday, March 10, at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our parish retreat was unique because it was facilitated by two nuns from the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration in Ellwood City, PA. On Friday evening, the Sisters joined us for the service of The Akathist Hymn to the Theotokos, followed by a Lenten reception to welcome them to Cincinnati. However, one of the Sisters is not a stranger to Cincinnati. She was once a member of our parish, taught and directed church school programs, and was also an active former member of our Philoptochos chapter. Mother Paula felt very blessed to be with us for this Lenten retreat. After the morning registration and coffee hour, sixty nine participants gathered together for a Lenten prayer service in the Church. Then we proceeded to the small hall for an uplifting presentation involving interactive feedback from the participants, wonderful handouts, questions and answers for reflection, and sharing with one another. Mother Paula s practical suggestions were based on sharing her own personal experiences in facing challenges and discovering helpful resources for spiritual growth in prayer, worship and almsgiving. The spirit of fellowship, unity of purpose and attentive expectation was evident within the room as participants shared their questions and feedback with Mother Paula. In the afternoon, a delicious Lenten lunch was provided by the ladies of Philoptochos. Sister Christine, the youngest member of the Monastery, gave a slide show presentation on the History of the Orthodox Monastery of the Transfiguration and Life of Mother Alexandra (Princess Ileana). Mother Alexandra s life in exile as the former Princess Ileana of Romania during the Communist rule of Romania, and her journey to America to establish the monastery in 1967 were truly inspiring. It was Mother Alexandra s dream to provide a place where American Orthodox women from all ethnic backgrounds could come to live the monastic life and benefit from a liturgical cycle in English. Sister Christine also shared the journey of her own personal calling to join the Monastery. She had worked as a registered nurse in the same hospital where Mother Alexandra had reposed many years prior and providentially, on her last day at work before joining the Monastery, she met the caregiver who had taken care of Mother Alexandra during her final days in the hospital. A fulfilling day wrapped up with viewing photos of the monastery s activities and participants asking questions about monastery daily life. Philoptochos will send a donation to the monastery from the proceeds of the registration fee. It is our chapter s hope that by sponsoring this retreat and offering hospitality, that we can all emerge from Great Lent with greater self awareness, the tools to grow as individuals in Christ and to establish Godly priorities in changing times. 11 Stewardship Message In the Lord s Prayer, we ask God to forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. If we forgive men their trespasses, God will also forgive us. But if we do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will God forgive our trespasses (Matthew 6: 9-15). Jesus also tells the story of a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. One of them owes the king 10,000 talents. An internet search reveals that 1 talent in Jesus time typically weighed about 50 kg (roughly 110 pounds). 10,000 talents is the equivalent of 1,100,000 pounds or the average weight of 275 US cars. As of 3/13/2018, the international price of gold is $42,440.59/kg. At this price, 1 talent would be worth about $2.122 million and 10,000 talents would be worth over $21.22 billion! The servant, along with his wife, children and all his possessions, are all about to be sold off as repayment; he falls down before his king, begging for patience and time to pay the debt. The king s response to the servant is astounding: he is moved with compassion, releases him, and forgives the entire debt. That same servant now goes out and encounters one of his fellow servants who owed him 100 denarii, lays hands on him and grabs him by the throat, saying Pay me what you owe! So his fellow servant falls down at his feet and begs him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you all. The servant who was forgiven a $21.2 billion debt, instead goes and throws his fellow servant into prison for 100 denarii, a modern day debt under $200. The master learns of this and is furious. You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you? When it comes to Stewardship many of us have heard that when we make our Stewardship contribution we should do so in accordance with the Lord s generosity that He has shown us. But, what can we possibly do, what can we possibly offer back and what can possibly compare to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ s generosity, who through His grace, mercy and compassion, came into our world and saved us by paying off the ultimate debt, by giving His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45) with His voluntary Crucifixion and glorious Resurrection? Jesus gives us the answer in 2 commandments that are hinged on 1 very important word: Love. We must love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind and we must love our neighbor as we love ourselves. (Matthew 22:36-40) Jesus finishes the story by saying that the master delivered the servant who did show compassion to the torturers until he paid all that he owed. He remarks, So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses. Let us give freely, let us give cheerfully, let us love without exception, let us forgive unequivocally & completely like the master did, and let us be compassionate and merciful to our fellow neighbors in abundance, for, as we re reminded in the Book of James, Mercy triumphs over judgment, but judgment is without mercy to those who do not show mercy Stewardship List Through Aamodt, Peter & Karen Adinamis, George & Robyn Alexandrou, Eirene Anastasiou, Demetra Andreadis, Paul Andreadis, Sophie S.
