3 St. Joseph and St. Bernard catholic Parishes VOCATION PRAYER DAY Friday, September 14 - Saturday, September 15 Eucharistic Adoration is on the Second Friday of each month at St. Joseph beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday and concluding with Benediction (closing prayer and songs lasting approximately 15 minutes) at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. in the Celestin Center. This is a requirement for baptism and is a once-only class lasting approximately one hour led by Deacon Mark Wade. If you are planning a baptism in the near future, please call the parish office to register. The Bruté Society of the Diocese of Evansville was formed in 1990 to honor those individuals or couples who have distinguished themselves through voluntary service and stewardship to their parishes. Congratulations to the St. Joseph Bruté Society Inductees for 2018: Bill and Beth Putt Harold and Pat Kermode The Bruté Society Mass and Induction Ceremony will be held at St. Benedict Cathedral on Sunday, November 4, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Thank you Bill & Beth and Harold & Pat for the many ways in which you serve our parish! As the calendar turns to fall, it time to think about our annual Chicken Dinner. This year s dinner will be on Sunday, November 4th. On Monday, September 17th, we will have a planning meeting at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Center Conference Room. Everyone is invited to this meeting. Please come and help with the planning. We value your input and ideas. We will have a basket raffle at the dinner. If anyone is interested donating a themed basket valued at $20 $30 (or making a cash donation, please contact Jane Kelly at Calling all St. Joseph Parishioners! We are excited to announce the kickoff of our new Family Formation program. As we all know, the formation of our faith is a life-long process it doesn t stop just because we reach a certain age. With that in mind, we have created a program for ALL parishioners at all ages and stages of life. We will kick off this new program with a parish dinner on September 19 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. We ll supply everything just bring yourselves and your families for a fun-filled evening and more information on the program. After this night, we will meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month, with a parish meal on the first Wednesday. Confirmation and First Communion preparation will also take place during these Wednesday get-togethers. Are you Interested In Becoming Catholic, or Want to Learn More About Your Catholic Faith? Inquiry sessions begin Tuesday, September 25, in the Parish Center Conference Room. For more information on the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) process call the parish office. 4 St. Joseph and St. Bernard catholic Parishes August 28, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Over the past few months, our Church has once again been rocked with reports of misconduct by members of the clergy. First there were the allegations against Archbishop McCarrick, then the release of the grand jury report in Pennsylvania, and finally last weekend the statement of Archbishop Viganò asserting wrongdoing and cover up of abuse on the part of high ranking Vatican officials, including Pope Francis. Our hearts are wrenched by the accounts of the suffering of the victims of clergy sexual abuse, and we are ashamed at how the leadership of the Church often dealt with these crimes. The 2002 Charter for the Protection of Youth and Young People has helped our diocese to address this terrible problem by requiring a zero-tolerance policy toward those who abuse; safe environment training and background checks; a predominantly lay review board; prompt reporting to civil authorities; and a victim assistance coordinator. I am firmly committed to the strict enforcement of these provisions and ensuring that everyone involved in Church ministry understands that no abusive act of any kind will be tolerated. The Diocese of Evansville recently participated in our regular Safe Environment audit as required by the Charter and we expect to be found in compliance with its mandates. In the coming weeks, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will be initiating a thorough investigation of the allegations against Archbishop McCarrick utilizing a predominantly lay group of experts. The Conference will also establish new ways in which people can report misconduct complaints against bishops and will advocate for more effective and timely resolution of such allegations. I ask that we continue to pray for and support all victims of sexual abuse, especially those harmed by members of the clergy. I will be leading prayer services for healing and reparation in each of our deaneries over the coming weeks. I invite our priests to likewise offer opportunities for their parishioners to gather in prayerful solidarity, remembering all those hurt by clergy sexual misconduct and asking God to purify and heal our Church. These are painful times when we are asked by Christ to carry the cross with our wounded brothers and sisters and to bear the burden of the public sins and crimes of fellow members of the Church, Through Jesus's death and resurrection, we know that sin and death do not have the final word. With God's grace, we hope that our prayers, penances and efforts will help cleanse and renew our Church, restoring our vitality and integrity so that we might be the light of the world and effective messengers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. St. Bernard Visitor Sr. Kathleen Weigand O.S.B., from St. Vincent Mission, in David KY, will be with us the weekend of September 16th at St. Bernard. Sr. Kathleen is the former Executive Director of St. Vincent Mission and is now serving in the capacity of Mission Speaker and Public Relations for St. Vincent Mission. Bryan Macke and other adults along with the SMG Youth Group have accompanied our young volunteers over the years where they have volunteered in the missions home repair program and performed other volunteer services. St. Vincent Mission continues as an outreach organization that was started in 1968 to help those of the Appalachian area in need of Food and Clothing, Sustainable Agriculture Program, Emergency Assistance, Career Assistance, Educational Grants and Home Repairs. Please join us in welcoming her. Religious Education Classes Registration forms for the upcoming religion class year have been mailed out. If you didn t receive a form and would like to sign up your children, please call Rose Obert ( ). The first class is October 3. All forms are due by September 16. A child must be 3 years old by August 1 and be potty trained to be in the Preschool class. Congratulations to Leroy and Sauny Seib on receiving the 2018 Bruté Award from St. Bernard.
