2 -The Baraga Bulletin Summer 2013 A Message From Our Executive Director Dear Friends In Christ: We are really gearing up for the next Baraga Days which will be held in Duluth in October. A week or so ago I was privileged to present a program on Bishop Baraga at the Pro Cathedral of the Holy Name of Mary in Sault Ste. Marie. This was special to me for the following reasons. One, the Pro Cathedral is my home parish, and two, Sault Ste. Marie was the Diocesan See for many years. In fact, I alluded to the old Bishop Baraga museum which was in the Sault directly across the street from the Church. As a young boy, I used to go there while my mother worked at the rectory for the priests. I got to know a lot about Bishop Baraga and his mission to our land. I am hoping to see many of you at the Baraga Days this year. At this time, our diocese is currently awaiting word on a new bishop. But work continues unhindered. The Cathedral addition is coming along quite well. While I have not heard anything from Rome yet as to the present status of the cause for Bishop Baraga, I hope to have some type of report in the near future perhaps at Baraga Days itself. God bless you and I am looking forward to being with you at Baraga Days! Rev. Benedetto J. J. Paris Executive Director, Bishop Baraga Association From the Editor Dear friends, I hope you have all enjoyed your summer. It has definitely been a busy time at the Association as we continue to work on the preparations for Bishop Baraga Days in Duluth. We have been blessed with a wonderful team of volunteers from the Duluth area who have been working tirelessly to fundraise and help organize the event. Please make sure you get your meal reservations in as soon as possible. In this issue, you will find an updated Event Schedule as well as other areas you may want to visit during your trip to Duluth or possibly in a future visit. On a personal note, I have had some recent medical developments. On July 25th I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then I have had a bilateral mastectomy and will begin chemotherapy the beginning of September. I will continue to work while I take this unexpected journey. I ask for patience during the next few months though, as I may have to adjust my schedule to accommodate the treatment. If you need to contact the Association, please contact us via when possible. That will allow me to respond as I am able. I have been so blessed, even in this challenging time. I am surrounded by a wonderful family, friends, and co-workers who are so supportive and loving. I pray to Venerable Frederic Baraga for his intercession for healing and successful treatment. God Bless, Len September 21: Look not mournfully into the past; it cannot return. Wisely improve the present - it is thine; go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear and with a manly heart.

Summer 2013 The Baraga Bulletin - 3 Madeline Island, Wisconsin: An Unexpected Encounter with Venerable Frederic Baraga and a Bit of His History Deacon Tom McClelland, August 11, 2013 On Friday, August 9, 2013, my wife, Mary Anne and I put our vehicle on the car ferry to Madeline Island with the intent of having a leisurely self-styled driving tour of this island, since it is the only one of the Apostle Islands that tourists can drive on. During the ferry crossing, I studied the map, and looked at various brochures, and noted that the only village on Madeline Island is La Pointe. In my mind I thought, Sounds like a quaint place, with an apparent French background as evidenced in the spelling of the name. Once ashore, we puttered along the main street (15-20 MPH) heading mostly south, gawking at things and people and noting that everybody on the island must either own a sailboat, cabin cruiser, or kayak boats were everywhere! I turned right onto Old Fort Rd, passed the marina, and caught a glimpse of a street sign that said Indian Cemetery. With mild curiosity, I turned in the direction indicated, and very shortly the street dead-ended in a cul-de-sac. On the left was indeed a small cemetery with a few Indian burial houses and a few very old looking headstones. A weathered white cross, maybe feet tall, stood approximately in the middle. Nothing gave me any sense of great importance here. Then I noticed four metal posts connected by chains in a patch of weeds across the street. The posts surrounded a rock with a metal plaque on it. I wondered what it was. Oh, my! You could have pushed me over with a feather! This is the site of Baraga s Mission! This is the La Pointe!! (At one time in the past I vaguely remember reading that Bishop Baraga went to La Pointe, but I had no idea where that was.) Why was I so unaware? Why was I not thinking? Thank you, Holy Spirit, for bringing me here!!! This is a pure gift! In the tourist brochures, it was pointed out that Madeline Island had been home of the Ojibway for hundreds of years. So here I was standing on or very near a place that the Venerable Frederic Baraga had walked and breathed and ministered to the natives! This was a glorious realization to me, and suddenly I felt that

4 -The Baraga Bulletin Summer 2013 everything else about my being in the Apostle Islands paled drastically by comparison. The little cemetery at La Pointe now had a whole new and mighty significance for me. I felt disappointed that there were no bands playing or choirs signing heavenly music; there was simply sunshine and a gentle breeze and the little sounds of the water from the nearby marina. The main view of the cemetery: The following sign, mounted on posts next to the cemetery fence, explains a lot! The text on the sign reads: LA POINTE INDIAN CEMETERY Established about 1836 as part of a Roman Catholic mission under the guidance of the dynamic Austrian priest, Frederick Baraga, later made a bishop. The white man s style of house was adopted as a grave cover by the Christianized Ojibway (Chippewa) in his custom of protecting both the dead and the food left with the dead. The food gave sustenance for the 4-day journey to the Hereafter as well as something for the spirit to leave for friends, relatives and the poor. A defaced stone marks the grave of Great Buffalo, principal chief of the Ojibway on Lake Superior. Chief Little Buffalo, his Protestant son, is buried across the road and south in a grave marked with 4 pines. A Frenchman, Cadeau, journeyed to Lake Superior in 1671, eventually marrying an Ojibway. His grandson, Michel Cadotte, opened a fur-trading post on this island in 1793 for the North West Company, a post later acquired by John Jacob Astor s American Fur Company, Michel continuing until 1823 as manager. Here Michel Cadotte is buried, and by his side his grandchild, Julia Mary Warren of the noted family of fur traders and scholars. (La Pointe Indian Cemetery Restoration Fund 1961) From my past discussions with Deacon John Cadeau, Baraga, MI, I am assuming this Michel Cadotte is very likely an ancestor of his. The headstone of Michel Cadotte has broken off at its base and now lies flat on the ground, just to the right of the thin vertical headstone mentioned above.

Summer 2013 The Baraga Bulletin - 5 The thin, vertical headstone is that of Michel Cadotte s grandchild, Julia Mary Warren. Sacred to the memory of Michel Cadotte who departed this life July 8, 1837 aged 72 years 11 months & 16 days Note the white object lying on the upper-left of the stone; it is an animal tooth. Dog? Bear? Sacred to the memory of Julia Mary, daughter of Lyman M. Warren, who departed this life May 6, 1824, aged 5 months and 21 days. Prayer O God, I adore you with all my heart. Thank you for the life and holiness of your servant, Frederic Baraga. I ask you to honor him by the title of Saint and to grant the favors which I ask today. Bless also all the members of the Bishop Baraga Association: the living, that we may be faithful, and the dead, that they may quickly enter your eternal life. Amen. Bio Deacon Thomas J. 10 10 -The Baraga Bulletin Summer 2013 CANONIZATION OF A SAINT What does it take to be recognized as a Saint? Frequent questions arise regarding the Canonization process. Following is a simple explanation of the journey. Venerable Frederic Baraga s cause is currently at 5b. At this time, the case is in the hands of the theological and scientific commissions in Rome. We patiently await word from them whether the potential miracle before them will result in a recommendation for a Decree of a Miracle or if they will reject it. At this time, the most important thing we as an Association can do is to pray. Pray that the miracle before the commission will move our beloved Venerable Baraga one step closer to canonization. 1. Five year waiting period following the person s death a. Can be waived by the Pope (*Done recently in the case of Blessed John Paul II) 2. The local bishop initiates the cause for sainthood 3. A Positio (study of the life) is submitted to the Holy See for the Cause of Beatification and Canonization a. Upon acceptance of the positio, the formal cause for sainthood begins and the person is given the title Servant of God 4. Decree of Heroic Virtues a. An examination of the positio is done by a theological commission b. A recommendation is made to the Pope for a Decree of Heroic Virtues c. If accepted, the person is given the title Venerable 5. Beatification a. Investigation of a miracle attributed to the person is conducted on the diocesan level and then submitted to Rome b. An examination of the miracle is conducted by theological and scientific commissions c. A recommendation is made to the Pope for a Decree of a Miracle d. If accepted, at the Rite of Beatification the person is given the title of Blessed 6. Canonization a. A second miracle attributed to the Blessed is needed b. An examination of the miracle takes place c. A recommendation is made to the Pope for a Decree of a Miracle d. If accepted, the person is declared a saint August 31: Journey through life as pure and joyful as an angel. May misfortune never capture your view. May your guardian angel ever keep you in sight and may joy accompany you always.

Lives Touched by Bishop Baraga Lower Michigan Couple Wins Drawing That Raised Money for Venerable Frederic Baraga Chapel Loreene Zeno Koskey, Director of Communications A downstate couple has won $15,350 in the drawing conducted as a fundraiser for the construction of the Venerable Frederic Baraga Chapel, which will be an addition to St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette. The ticket belonging to Tom and Marion Hornacek of Pinconning, Michigan was drawn from among 614 tickets sold for the fundraiser. If 1,000 tickets had been sold, the prize would have been a 1993 red Corvette; instead, the raffle reverted to a cash drawing. The event generated $15,350 in donations to the chapel project, which actually will be doubled to $30,700 when matched dollar for dollar by a donation from the Dr. John and Mary Jane Beaumier family of Duluth, Minn. Interestingly enough, the winners of the drawing have Baraga connections. Tom Hornacek is the board president of Baraga Broadcasting, a Catholic radio network with five stations in the Diocese of Gaylord and one in the Diocese of Marquette at St. Ignace. The Venerable Baraga chapel will house the earthly remains of the first bishop of the Diocese of Marquette, Frederic Baraga, and be a beautiful and accessible place for his veneration. The $500,000 chapel project is expected to be completed in the fall. Donations are still being accepted and can be directed to Bishop Baraga Chapel, 1004 Harbor Hills Drive, Marquette, MI
