Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, August 5, 2018 Today we commemorate: 10th Sunday of Matthew Forefeast of the Transfiguration of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Eusignius the Martyr of Antioch Our Righteous Father Eugene of Aitola EPISTLE READING St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16 Prokeimenon. Mode 1. Psalm 32.22,1 Let your mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Verse: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous. The reading is from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians 4:9-16 Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are illclad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day."
9 God Works In Mysterious Ways By Eleni Malandrinos This incident happened two years ago. I had gone to a doctor because I was going to have Hernia Surgery. I had not particularly cared for this doctor right from the beginning, but my husband assured me that he was fine, that there was no need for me to be afraid. I went ahead and continued with him and paid ahead of time for the surgery. As time went on I made a frightening discovery! He the doctor, that was doing my surgery, did not like women! I was scared! I had paid him for the surgery and now if I changed my mind I would probably only get back half my money or none of it. So, I had to proceed with getting that surgery. I prayed many times over, that God would give me a sign. A sign that everything would be ok. As I was going to read my women s daily devotional one day, the first thing that appeared to me was just believe in Me. I felt that God was speaking to me, like that was my first sign from Him. On the day of my surgery, my son and I were driving to the hospital. I decided to get some gas, making sure that we wouldn t get stranded later on the way home. As I pulled up to the gas station guess who I saw? It was a nun! putting gas in her car! I parked near her. I was thrilled and crazed, that I jumped out of my car and said THANK YOU GOD, for sending me another sign. I went over to the nun and as I explained my story to her, she became wildly excited and kept saying Wait Wait!! I have something for you!!! She kept running around her car trying to figure out where she put what she was looking for. I found it! My Holy Water, she yelled. Right then and there at the gas station the nun anointed me. That was my sign from God that I needed, letting me know that everything was going to be alright. I thanked her and we all felt the excitement of this true blessing. It amazes me how God does work in truly mysterious ways. PSALM: 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I will put my trust in the Lord. In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid.
My Spiritual Journey By: John Fowler This is my Spiritual Journey that lasted from my Senior year in High School (1964) until September 20, 1987 at St. Elias Greek Orthodox Church in San Bernardino. Over that span of 23 years, there was not one defining moment but several Priest (Episcopalian, Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox) a Rabbi and two college professors. As a child, Church was where my mother dragged me to on Sundays. My dad was baptized and confirmed Episcopalian but as an adult became an atheist or agnostic as my mother didn t think it sounded as bad. My mother really didn t understand Theology but was a committed Christian. We would attend the neighborhood church wherever we lived, usually Lutheran or Episcopalian, as long as it wasn t Catholic. Lent of 1964, the Vicar at the Episcopalian Church, where I was attending, would be having special talks entitled What is an Anglo-Catholic. I enrolled. The priest there, Father Sculley based it on the Anglican Missal (based on Book of Common Prayer 1928, with Catholic additions). During that time Fr. Sculley and I had many conversations. Those four weeks ended up going until I started college that September. What I came away with was the love of the Eucharist and becoming a committed Christian. My early college years were filled with The Fraternity, parties and going out dancing (a normal young and foolish college student). I still managed to go to Mass on Sundays, carried my Rosary carefully hidden at all times. Very much a proud Anglo-Catholic and member of the Episcopal Church. But that changed quickly, in September 1966, when I met my future wife Phyllis at a dance. She had just graduated from St. Anthony s High School when we began to date. Before long we were head over heels in Love and by April were engaged to be married. I began attending Roman Catholic Mass with Phyllis, with no interest of converting. I had a real problem with certain Roman Catholic Dogma. But as time went on I did convert, not in faith but for the love I had in my Phyllis. We were married November 18, During the next ten to twelve years, I noticed a big change in the Catholic Church, of which I was not pleased and felt that I had made a big mistake converting. During the late 1970 s early 1980 s my wife, for her own personal reasons left the church. I stopped attending the Catholic Church, made a few attempts of going to the Episcopal Church. I was at my lowest point spiritually not knowing where to turn! That is when I decided to return to college, fix my Fraternity years, finish my BA and go on to Graduate School for my master s in history. I decided on Cal State Fullerton, because they had an outstanding Religious Studies department and I would be able to take religion classes on the side in order to discover who I was. Once back in college I made a decision that I would find out exactly where I belonged spiritually. The results six years later I would never have guessed. I began with Jewish Studies as it is the corner stone of Christianity. Of the 4-5 classes which I took, I met the most wonderful man, Rabbi Bergmann. In his early 60 s a part time instructor, he glowed with his love of God and his faith thru his example. He made the study of scripture a joy. I also took several Christian Studies. These classes were taught by an ex-roman Catholic Priest, Dr.George Saint Laurent. I took four of his classes which were part of my Graduate Program in history. But the person who made the biggest difference was Dr. Charles Frazee, also an ex-roman Catholic priest. He taught Eastern European History, Church History I and II along with Byzantine History and Eastern Orthodoxy of which I took all of his classes. In the two and half years I got to know Fr. Frazee and he got to know me. We would talk often mostly about religion and my struggles. During this time I became familiar with St. Vladimir s Seminary Press and read everything I could on Eastern Orthodoxy. But finally one day in Dr.Frazee s office, he looked at me and said; John, you can t be a Roman Catholic if you don t accept all of their Dogma! You should
either go back to the Episcopal Church or follow your heart to the Orthodox Church. You have to make a commitment, or you will never find peace. After the advice of my college professor Dr. Frazee, to follow my heart and search out Orthodoxy, I went to St. Elias in San Bernardino. It was there that I met Fr. Peter Costarakis. I explained to him my background, what I had been studying and my desire to become Orthodox. We talked for about an hour and agreed to meet casually several times a month. I recall him saying to me as I was leaving, John I will see you next Sunday at Liturgy. Sunday, I sat in the last pew and observed Liturgy. Wow it was beautiful! I knew at that moment that I wanted to be Orthodox. Not because of what some book said, but because I wanted to experience it as a member. After several months, Fr. Peter asked me when I wanted to be Chrismated, and without hesitation I said, how about next Sunday. He asked me who I wanted as my sponsor. My reply was I don t know anyone! Immediately he went behind the Iconostasis and called Andrew I would like you to meet someone. He introduced Sub-Deacon Andrew Lesko to me and said Andrew this is John Fowler, would you like to be his sponsor in Chrismation? I remember Fr. Andrew saying, I would be honored. And so, it was on September 20, 1987 that I became a member of God s Holy Church The Greek Orthodox Church thru the Sacrament of Chrismation. Through job changes and life events, we moved to Northern California and met many priests. Each planting in me seeds of knowledge in Orthodoxy, which little by little helped me to grow in the faith. Several years after retirement, we returned to Southern California and purchased our home in Menifee. Life is truly amazing for who would know that the Sub-Deacon who sponsored me in Chrismation, many years ago is now my Parish Priest, planting more seeds of his knowledge of Orthodoxy here at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Murrieta. No, my Spiritual Journey was not one special event but a long hard road for this 17-year-old Anglo-Catholic Episcopalian to Roman Catholicism and finally to Orthodoxy. Many planted their seeds of faith in my heart, but now at 72 years old, I still have so much more to learn, but I have arrived at my Spiritual Home in God s Holy Church. I have peace. PSALM: 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you. MATT: 7:7-8 Ask and it shall be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened. Divine guidance is always with us. God speaks to us in many ways through the still, small voice in our times of prayer and through the unexpected yet perfectly timed suggestion of someone. There is no limit to what God can do through us and through others. Thank you, John, for sharing your inspiring story. It is truly meaningful to see how you chose to trust God and opened yourself to His love and goodwill. Blessings to you always. Rosemary Georgiou
STEWARDSHIP CORNER Stewardship 2018 Parish General Assembly Stewardship Report July 29, 2018 These figures as of 7/28/2018 *Budget 2018: $157, *Amount Pledged 2018: $81, *Amount Received: $59, *Pledged Stewards: 81 *Amount Received with no Pledge Card: 11* *Total number: 92 Levels of Giving by Pledged Members: $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ As we look at the levels of giving we are not really supporting our church through the Stewardship Program. People still don t understand that Stewardship not only pays our bills but keeps the Church functioning in its Ministries. If we expect to be Stewards, we need to examine our giving habits. The Church teaches us that tithing is found in Scripture and in the Tradition of the Orthodox Church. We are striving to pay our budget with the money offerings through our Stewardship Ministry and not by the Festival Funds collected every October. The Festival monies will go towards a capital fund for the eventual development of our Church complex and new Church for the Temecula Valley. It will also go to philanthropic activates of our local community, the Metropolis of San Francisco and the Archdiocese of America. We all have so much to be thankful for and offer our gratitude unto the Lord for the many blessings each of us have received. Our homes are still standing, unlike the hundreds of families and individuals who have lost their homes to the wild fires ravaging the State of California. It is important for us to view our Stewardship as a part of our Spiritual lives. We need to commit ourselves to Christ and His Church with all our lives. The Church is the Ark of our Salvation. Without the Church as the Living Body of Christ we have no salvation!
So please, continue to give of yourselves, your talents and your treasure to the Church of St. Nicholas. It is the Church that nourishes us with the Eucharist, the Mysteries and teaches us the faith of our Fathers and Mothers and is with us during every segment of our life. Thank you to those who have given faithfully as stewards. You have helped the Parish in so many ways. Continue that help and remember that Stewardship is a way of life. Thank you and God bless. Michael Rymer, Stewardship Chair 2018 *If you haven t filled out a pledge card and have given, please do so today! There are eleven of you that have given but have no Stewardship/Membership Card.
Encyclical for the Feast of the Dormition 2018 D A T E : August 1, 2018 C A T E G O R Y : M E T R O P O L I T A N ' S E N C Y C L I C A L S A U T H O R : H I S E M I N E N C E M E T R O P O L I T A N G E R A S I M O S His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos Dearly Beloved, The Virgin is holding the Creator in her arms as an infant." Saint Photios the Great, Homily XVII We are accustomed to seeing and venerating icons of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus Christ. As we contemplate and prepare for the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos over the next two weeks, we are challenged by the converse of the above statement from the great Saint, theologian, and Patriarch Photios. In the icon of the Feast of the Dormition, the Creator holds the Virgin in His arms. As Orthodox Christians, we proclaim that the translation of Mary into the heavens at the time of her falling asleep is a great mystery and miracle. Tradition holds that at her falling asleep, the Lord entered the room and received her soul from the Archangel Michael, while an angelic choir sang nearby. We believe that Mary passed through death unharmed and already dwells with her Son in the kingdom that is to come. The icon for the Feast presents our hope to pass through death and into eternal life with Christ. We can only sing praises to God when we encounter this miracle. In our life s experiences, the time will come when we will face the death of a loved one. As Orthodox Christians, however, we look upon death in a different way. The Dormition of the Theotokos is a
reminder that we too, will depart from this life to the source of life. We must also call to mind the words Saint Paul uses when instructing the Philippians about death: For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. These first two weeks in August always provide us the opportunity to grow in faith and be strengthened by the intercessions of the Holy Mother of God. Let us contemplate the mystery and the miracle of the Dormition of the Theotokos. Observe the fast. Attend the Paraklesis services and sing praises to the Almighty God and to the Virgin Mary. Take time to submit your name and the names of your loved ones so that we might pray for your health, salvation, visitation, pardon and remission of sins..." For you, the faithful stewards of our Holy Metropolis, I ceaselessly pray: commemorating our most Holy, Pure, Blessed and Glorious Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, with all the saints let us commit ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God. With Love in Christ, + G E R A S I M O S Metropolitan of San Francisco
