We will also serve the Great Vespers Kneeling Service directly following the Divine Liturgy next week (with a very small break in between, so the children can have a quick snack..) Join us for a Pot-Luck dinner, a Teaching & Discussion time for an hour, (reading the book The Passions and Virtues, by St. Paisios) and ending with Little Compline. 3. In the Six Psalms of Orthros, we find all the Christian advice, wisdom, and morality. We cannot come to the Divine Liturgy and receive the Holy Communion without preparation. This is step one in any kind of spiritual life. Fr. Seraphim Rose A brother came to see a certain hermit and, as he was leaving, he said, "Forgive me Abba for preventing you from keeping your rule." The hermit replied, "My rule is to welcome you with hospitality and to send you away in peace. Sayings of the Desert Fathers [St. Paisios responds to the question: Geronta, which is the genuine, actually humility? ] When someone else humbles you and you accept it, then you have real humility. For real humility is humility in action, not in words. Once St. Kosmas Aitolos [commemorated on August 24th] asked the people who had gathered around him: Which one of you does not have pride? I, responded one man from the crowd. And the Saint told him: Come here, you who claim to have no pride. Cut off half of your mustache and go into the public square. But I cannot do that, he replied. Well then, you do not have humility, the Saint told him. Thus, the Saint made his point that real humility is humility in action. [St. Paisios responds to the comment: Geronta, I react when people bother me. ] You react because you have no humility. Have you seen how much humility Abba Moses had? When they ordained him to the Priesthood, the Archbishop, wanting to test him, instructed the clergy accordingly: When Abba Moses enters the Sanctuary, order him to leave; and then follow behind him to hear what he might say. As soon as Abba Moses entered the Sanctuary, the other clergy said to him: You are a blackened man, what are you doing here? And he said: They are right. What am I, a blackened man, doing here with these angels? He was not offended in the least, nor did he get angry. [St. Paisios responds to the question: Geronta, is it possible for one to be meek and not react when offended, yet not have humility? ] The humble person is also meek. But this does not mean that the meek person is also humble. Meekness must also contain humility, otherwise, if it does not, one may appear to be meek, but be full of pride within, causing him to think: They are such fools. Let them go on saying bad things about me! This reminds me of the monk who would never react in the least when other fathers made remarks about him, or offended him in some way. Since they could not detect his inner behavior, they once asked him: Tell us, since you do not speak out when we scold you, what are you thinking? And he replied: I think to myself: They are mere dolts. Let them say whatever they like! In other words, he simply scorned them. Another person in Epeirus had done some repair work to a church. He kept saying that the work he did was rather insignificant. But when I remarked that his work was not at all insignificant, he was actually offended! Would you have done a better job repairing the church? he asked, with indignation. I know about construction; I am not a carpenter, like you. My father was a building contractor. My point is that one - on his own - will easily humble himself, but this does not mean that one is truly humble.
