3 From the Chaplain November is the month of Remembrance. On the first day, the Church remembers, and gives thanks for, the countless number of holy men and women, the saints and martyrs, whose lives and deaths bore witness to Christ. They both set the example to which we aspire, but also in their heavenly state and reward, encourage us as we continue to run the race they have now completed. As we commemorate All Saints, we bear in mind that we have a long way to go! The following day, the Church commemorates all the Faithful Departed. All Souls Day can often be a very intimate and moving occasion, when we remember with fondness and indeed pray for those we knew and loved who have gone before us. This year, as well as in the morning, Holy Communion will be celebrated at lunchtime for visitors, staff and those who are unable to make the early celebration. After this, we remember those who have served their country having fallen in war; both with the Solemn Act of Remembrance on Remembrance Sunday and a few days later, on Armistice Day itself. I am hugely encouraged to see how this increasingly resonates, not least with children, and in my last parish it was always incredibly moving to take part in School Acts of Remembrance. We must, after all, never forget. This year chapel will be playing its part in the Palace Commemoration on 11 November, beginning in Clock Court with the laying of wreathes, followed by a service in the Chapel itself. Finally, we will commemorate the 500th anniversary of this palace with a special Evensong on Monday 16th November. This will incorporate the anthem specially commissioned for the occasion by the Choral Foundation and Historic Royal Palaces from the Master of the Queen s Music, Judith Weir, thus continuing the tradition of Royal music written for the chapel. In all this, we remember our own frailty in faith, but with the gratitude to those who, in their various ways, gave all for us to be who we are. They followed their Lord in death; may they share his resurrection. Yours in Dño, Anthony Howe 3

And they cried with a loud voice saying, alleluia. Salvation to our God which sitteth on the throne, and unto the Lamb. And I heard a voice saying, What are these that are arrayed in white robes? And whence came they? And all the angels who stood round the throne, and the elders with the four beasts fell down before the throne, and worshipped God, saying, alleluia. Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be unto our God for ever and ever, Amen. Alleluia. [Revelation 7: 9-15] 5
6 Sunday 8th November am Holy Communion am Act of Remembrance and Choral Matins For the Fallen They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. The Last Post The Silence The Reveille Hymn O valiant hearts, who to your glory came Through dust of conflict and through battle flame : Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, Your memory hallowed in the land you loved. Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war, As who had heard God s message from afar; All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave To save mankind yourselves you scorned to save. Splendid you passed, the great surrender made, Into the light that never more shall fade; Deep your contentment in that blest abode, Who wait the last clear trumpet-call of God. O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead, Whose Cross has brought them and whose staff has led : In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land Commits her children to thy gracious hand. Would man but wake from out his haunted sleep, Earth might be fair and all men glad and wise. Earth shall be fair and all her people one, Nor till that hour shall God s whole will be done. 15 Remember a loved one at Christmas time with a Christmas Angel Decoration This is a unique way of celebrating and remembering the life of someone special to you, whilst helping to ensure that the music of the Chapel Royal continues for generations to come. Each donation of a minimum of 10, made to the Choral Foundation, secures a beautiful Christmas Angel decoration. This will have the name of the person you nominate written on it and will then be hung on a Christmas tree in the Chapel Royal from the 1st Sunday in Advent to the end of December. In addition, the names of those commemorated in this way will be recorded in a book which will be displayed in the Chapel from Tuesday 6th January until the end of Christmastide on 2nd February and which is then kept in the Chapel records in perpetuity. Unfortunately, it is not possible to distribute the decorations after Christmas. An example of the Christmas Angel decoration will be displayed on the website from November, at To reserve your Christmas Angel, please take a form and red donation envelope from the back of the Chapel. Place the completed form, together with your donation in the red envelope and deposit it in the large donation box at the back of the Chapel. A representative of the Choral Foundation will take care of the rest. For the last three years, the Christmas Angels have proved very popular and so I suggest that you register your interest as soon as possible so that your personal Angel can be displayed throughout Advent. Fr Anthony Howe 15
