3 From the Chaplain Many thanks to all of you for your very kind wishes for Christmas and for your generous presents and cards. Although this has been my first Christmas at Hampton Court I can safely say I feel very much at home! I pray that 2016 will be a happy and blessed year for all. My thanks also go to all who have worked so hard over the period in order that the Chapel was at its very best. I know that more people appreciate it than can be mentioned. We begin the calendar year, as always, with the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord (transferred to the Sunday before). In commemorating the giving of the three gifts of the Magi, we are reminded just how they reveal the true meaning of the mystery of the Incarnation. The gold tells of his eternal kingship, the frankincense of his divinity, and the myrrh of his humanity. God is with us and for us. In the Chapel Royal this feast has particular significance in the yearly offering of Her Majesty of these same gifts, at St. James s Palace. Here at Hampton Court we are reminded of this by the presence of the recreated Tudor State Crown on display in the Holy Day Closet. Earthly monarchy derives its power from the eternal one. The crown is surmounted by a cross. True power comes hand in hand with sacrifice and humility. Whilst we may not have power, in an earthly sense, we nevertheless are also able to reveal Christ to the nations, through our acts of charity and kindness. We are His ambassadors in all we do or say. As we begin this new year, let us make the resolution to do so with joy. Yours in Dño, Anthony Howe 3
