3 FROM THE CHAPLAIN In 1536 the Convocations of Canterbury and York ordered that the Feast of Dedication (or Dedication festival) throughout this realm be kept on the first Sunday in October: that practice has usually been followed in England where the date of consecration of a church is not known. In this Chapel Royal we cannot be sure whether Cardinal Thomas Wolsey consecrated this building as a new church in his new archiepiscopal palace (in which case the actual date of its consecration would be its Feast of Dedication); or he built it on the site of the chapel of the commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem as a rebuilding of that chapel (in which case its Dedication Festival would probably be the 24th of June, the Feast of the Nativity of St John Baptist, the Patron Saint of the Knights Hospitaller). In any case we worship God in a consecrated building (whether its consecration dates back eight hundred or five hundred years). Consecration means the separation of a person or thing for the service of God. In Christian use we mean one of three things: the act whereby bread and wine are offered to God in the Eucharist and become for us by the agency of the Holy Spirit the sacramental Body and Blood of our Lord; or, the act of conferring the sacred character of the office of bishop upon a priest; or the solemn setting apart of a building (or an altar or sacred eucharistic vessels) exclusively for the worship of God. The consecration of a church is reserved to a bishop, and is held to be an irrevocable act, so that the building can never be secularised it can never truly be deconsecrated. In September I wrote that I would explain how, following Martin Taylor s retirement, the office and work of the Clerk of the Chapel would be discharged. I have asked David Wright, to whom Martin gave some training in the ceremonial duties of a virger, to accept the post of Honorary Clerk of the Chapel, and I am glad to say that he has agreed to do so. Thanks to the generosity of the Director of Historic Royal Palaces, Mr Paul Gray, I shall have the help of Miss Sophie Jordan for two whole days a week with much of the clerical and administrative work which Martin used to do. When these new arrangements settle and develop, I am confident that the Chapel Royal will, by God s grace, flourish and prosper. On the last Sunday on October a replica of the Crown of England which was melted down after the Civil War, made under the direction of the Crown Jeweller, will be displayed permanently in the Holy Day Closet of the Chapel Royal. Made of rubies, sapphires and pearls injected with liquid glass to enhance their appearance, the front of the Crown presents an ornate jewelled cross; at the back is a figure of our Lady and the infant Christ; and four saints are set at equal intervals around it: St Edward the Confessor, St Edmund the Martyr-King of East Anglia, St George the Martyr, and King Henry VI, whose canonisation was proceeding well until King Henry VIII lost interest in it as relations with the Papacy worsened. But there King Henry VI stands, in King Henry VIII s Crown! Yours in Dño, Denis Mulliner 3

And to him that knocketh: it shall be opened. [Communion Proper for the Dedication of a Church] From Martin and Cynthia Taylor What a wonderful send off we had on Sunday 26th August it was lovely to see so many of you at the Garden Room. We have been quite overwhelmed by the generous cheque and the many gifts and cards we have received thank you all so much. Martin has decided that retirement is very busy already. However, we will not be surrounded by boxes forever and we hope we will find new homes for everything!!! We already feel part of the community here at St Nicholas Hospital and everyone has made us feel warmly welcomed. From our lounge we look across the lawn to the rivers beyond. On stepping outside our front door our eyes are drawn to the magnificent spire of Salisbury Cathedral. How fortunate we are It is a joy to be so near the Cathedral where we can continue to enjoy a high standard of choral music. We are quickly finding our way round the city and try not to get swept along with the many tourists. When we are settled which we hope will be quite soon we hope to be able to welcome some of you to our new home. With our warmest best wishes, Martin and Cynthia 4

But as he which hath calleth you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear. Love one another with a pure heart fervently. See that ye love one another. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. O Father, that we ask be done, Through Jesus Christ, thine only Son; Who, with the Holy Ghost and thee, Doth live and reign eternally. Amen. [Office Hymn at Compline from the 8th century Breviary] 11

12 Hymn 619 Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided, Urged and inspired us, cheered us on our way, Sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided: Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today. Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us, Speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze, Teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us: Lord of the word, receive your people s praise. Lord, for our land, in this our generation, Spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care: For young and old, for commonwealth and nation, Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer. Lord, for our world; when we disown and doubt him, Loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain; Hungry and helpless, lost indeed without him: Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign. Lord for ourselves; in living power remake us, Self on the cross, and Christ upon the throne; Past put behind us, for the future take us: Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.
