3 FROM THE CHAPLAIN Chamaiporn and I wish you all a very happy New Year 2014 and thank you very much for your kind Christmas cards and presents. In the Book of Common Prayer the secular year begins with the Circumcision of the Lord, by which the Divine Son of God on the eighth day of his incarnate life on earth was made obedient to the Law of Moses and consecrated to the service of his heavenly Father. The event is recorded in Luke 2: 21, and our Lord was also given the holy Name of Jesus at his circumcision in accordance with the Law, according to which a Jewish boy is named at his Berît Mîlāh Covenant of Circumcision ceremony. In the Scuola Grande in Venice there is a painting by Tintoretto of the Circumcision in a splendid series of scenes from our Lord s life; and a painting in Vienna in the Akademie der bildenden Künste by Rubens of 1605 represents the same ceremony. In its modern Calendar the Church of England (rather prudishly, perhaps) calls this festival The Naming of Jesus, although Common Worship calls it in full The Naming and Circumcision of Jesus ; but the Orthodox Churches and Luthern Churches, like the Book of Common Prayer, observe the 1st of January as the Circumcision of the Lord. The Roman Catholic Church also observed this feast on the 1st of January until 1960, but in that year Pope John XXIII in the new Missal replaced it with a celebration of our Lord s Incarnation with a different emphasis as the Divine Son of the Blessed Virgin Mary called the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. When we make our New Year resolutions this year it behoves us, as our Lord s latter-day disciples, to look at the Catechism in the Book of Common Prayer, which is printed between the offices of Baptism and Confirmation, to refresh our memories about our duties as Christians in belief and practice, and to resolve in the year ahead to offer ourselves anew to God s service by believing his truth more heartily and by obeying his commandments more faithfully. Yours in Dño, Denis Mulliner 3

I know that your life did not spring from mine; and yet I know that all I am is thine. My craft is hewing, joining, making good; and now my end is shaped and made by God. A simple carpenter my chosen trade; and now my life is fixed by powers that all things made. Your being fulfils a promise born of dreams; both innocence and fear shall make my destiny. By starlit night your midwife I have been; your blood on my hands the off ring seals. O child that lies... 4

How brightly beams the morning star! With sudden radiance from afar, with light and comfort glowing! Thy Word, Jesus, inly feeds us, rightly leads us, life bestowing. Shepherds rejoice, wise men adore, and angels sing: Glory be to God on high, peace on earth, goodwill towards men. The Law is cancelled, Jews and Gentiles all converted by the preaching of glad tidings of salvation. The blind have sight and cripples have their motion; diseases cured, the dead are raised, and miracles are wrought. Let us welcome such a guest with Hosanna. The Paschal Lamb is offered, Christ Jesus made a sacrifice for sin. The earth quakes, the sun is darkened, the powers of hell are shaken; and lo, he is risen up in victory: sing Alleluia! See, O see the fresh wounds, the goring blood, the pricks of thorns, the print of nails, and in the sight of multitudes a glorious ascension. Where now he sits on God s right hand, where all the choir of heaven all jointly sing: Glory be to the Lamb that sitteth on the throne. Let us continue our wonted note with Hosanna: Blessed be he that cometh in the Name of the Lord; with Alleluia we triumph in victory: the serpent s head bruised, Christ s kingdom exalted, and heaven laid open to sinners. Amen. [Verse anthem] 9

12 HYMN 601 1/ A Maiden most gentle and tender we sing: Of Mary the Mother of Jesus our King. Ave, ave, ave Maria; Ave, ave, ave Maria. 2/ How blest is the birth of that heavenly Child, Who came to redeem us in Mary so mild. Ave, ave,... 3/ The Archangel Gabriel foretold by his call The Lord of Creation, and Saviour of all. Ave, ave,... 4/ Three Kings came to worship with gifts rich and rare And marvelled in awe at the Babe in her care. Ave, ave,... 5/ Rejoice and be glad at this Christmas we pray; Sing praise to the Saviour, sing endless Ave: Ave, ave,... HYMN 604 See amid the winter's snow, Born for us on earth below, See the tender Lamb appears, Promised from eternal years. Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn! Hail, redemption's happy dawn! Sing through all Jerusalem, Christ is born in Bethlehem! Lo, within a manger lies He who built the starry skies, He who, throned in height sublime, Sits amid the cherubim. Hail,... Sacred Infant, all divine, What a tender love was thine, Thus to come from highest bliss Down to such a world as this! Hail,... Teach, O teach us, holy child, By thy face so meek and mild, Teach us to resemble thee In thy sweet humility. Hail,... Virgin mother, Mary blest, By the joys that fill thy breast, Pray for us, that we may prove Worthy of the Saviour's love. Hail, HYMN 605 Alleluya, song of sweetness, Voice of joy that cannot die; Alleluya is the anthem Ever dear to choirs on high: In the house of God abiding Thus they sing eternally. Alleluya thou resoundest, True Jerusalem and free; Alleluya, joyful mother, All thy children sing with thee; But by Babylon's sad waters Mourning exiles now are we. Alleluya cannot always Be our song while here below; Alleluya our transgressions Make us for awhile forgo; For the solemn time is coming When our tears for sin must flow. Therefore in our hymns we pray thee, Grant us, blessèd Trinity, At the last to keep thine Easter In our home beyond the sky, There to thee for ever singing Alleluya joyfully.
