3 In the First World War, Australia was the only British dominion to raise, equip and deploy in the field, its own flying corps. Number 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps (AFC) served in Palestine and Numbers 2, 3 and 4 Squadrons AFC flew on the Western Front in France. The AFC had four training squadrons based in Gloucestershire, Numbers 5 and 6 Training Squadrons AFC at Minchinhampton and Numbers 7 and 8 Training Squadrons AFC at Leighterton. These four AFC squadrons formed the 1st Training Wing AFC with its headquarters and AFC hospital in Tetbury. Flying training ceased on 15 March 1919 and the AFC departed from Southampton on board the P&O SS KAISAR-I-HIND on 6 May 1919 and arrived in Port Melbourne on 16 June Twenty-four members of the Australian Flying Corps are buried in Leighterton cemetery: flying instructors, cadets and ground crew. All except one died in during flight training, or of other causes. Additional members of the AFC who died in training are buried in other English cemeteries. A commemorative service, organised by Gloucestershire County of The Royal British Legion, has been held in Leighterton since 1931, except for the years ANZAC DAY SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE The Annual ANZAC Day Service of Remembrance will be held in Leighterton Cemetery on 26 April The Service, which is normally held on the Sunday closest to ANZAC day, will be attended by The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Service representatives from the Australian and New Zealand High Commissions, the Royal Air Force, the Commonwealth and War Graves Commission and members of the cadet forces. The Royal British Legion will be represented by the National Chairman, National Chairman of the Royal British Legion Women s Section and the Officers, Standard Bearers and members of RBL Branches in Gloucestershire. 3. The outline programme of events is attached for information. ANZAC DAY SERVICE OF REMEMBERANCE - 26TH APRIL 2015 SER TIME EVENT Guests arrive at Leighterton Primary School Parade musters in school playground Parade ready for inspection Arrival of Lord Vestey, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Parade inspection Parade march off to cemetery Service commences. During the Service, wreaths will be laid, the roll of honour read and children will place sprigs of rosemary on the headstones Parade assembles and March Past. Lord Vestey, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, will take the salute Refreshments in the school. Page 2
