3 December 11, 2016 Page 3 Christmas Season Flower Memorials What a beautiful way to remember your loved ones, living or deceased, with a donation in the amount of $10 toward the purchase of flowers which will grace the church environment during the Christmas Season. Only one name or one family name may be listed per donation, i.e. Mr. John Smith or John Smith Family. Please place this completed form along with your donation, in an envelope marked Christmas Flowers. You may then place it in the offering basket or return it to the parish. All memorials must be received by December 31. They will be published in the bulletin in January. Please note that the names of those memorialized will be printed, not the donor s name. Christmas Flower Memorials Memorial Name Donor s Name Amount Enclosed PLEASE PRINT NEATLY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Did St. Francis of Assisi invent the Christmas crib? Not exactly, but his devotion to the Incarnation and his love for the poverty of the Christ Child certainly popularized this beloved custom. Long before Francis, it was a custom at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome to enshrine a rich image of Mary, gilded and bejewelled, embracing the child Jesus. This church was founded as a kind of home for the feast of Christmas in the fourth century. In 1223, Francis was ready to celebrate this feast in a new way. In the tiny city of Greccio, he asked friends to prepare a place where they could experience the poverty and suffering embraced by Christ in his birth. It was a living scene: an ox from the barn, an ass from the stable, and peasants standing in for shepherds and kings. The night of the celebration was beautiful, the weather was warm, and people came in crowds, bearing candles and singing hymns that echoed through the forest. Francis himself chanted the Gospel and preached. The custom spread quickly, and by the sixteenth century cribs were seasonal features not only in church, but in the home. On December 17, the liturgy begins to unfold the Lord s birth before us, and it s the right time to follow this beautiful tradition. In Germany, each night throughout Advent children prepare a bedding for the manger. At bedtime prayer, a child places a single straw in the manger for each act of devotion or virtue performed during the day. If the children are good, then the Christ child will have plenty of soft bedding when he is placed in the manger on Christmas. Suggestions of how to Keep Christ in Christmas Turn off radios, TV and be prayerfully at peace, reflecting a renewed inner spiritual joy to all others. Greet people with "Merry Christmas", not "happy holidays". Visit nursing homes, hospitals, and the home-bound and bring them Christmas joys and greetings. Sing religious Christmas carols together with family, friends: go Christmas caroling!

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Christ's followers were skeptical when He preached the reality of His Body and Blood as food and drink. St. John said, "many of His disciples withdrew and no longer went about with Him." Seeing this, Jesus asked the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave me?" Simon Peter did not understand any more than those who left Christ, but his loyalty was more firm. "Lord," he said, "to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have the "Word of Eternal Life" right here with us day and night in our Adoration Chapel. Do you have something you want to ask Him? There are several hours needing adorers. Please pick one for your personal hour with Him. 9 December 11, 2016 Page 9 When powerful Hurricane Matthew tore through the Caribbean and up the East Coast, it left in its wake a huge death toll (Haiti alone lost more than 1,600 people), thousands of homes, businesses, churches and government buildings in ruins because of devastating flooding, and residents in shock on how they were going to rebuild their lives. Can you imagine losing a loved one and all of your possessions and then being faced with the challenge of trying to salvage your home and begin life anew? In the United States, North Carolina suffered terrible flooding. Some towns in the Diocese of Raleigh were washed away by raging waters of nearby rivers. The government estimates the area suffered $1.5 billion in damage. Now the waters have finally receded and residents are returning to find their homes often waterlogged and in ruins. Residents have begun the challenging task of cleaning up and saving what they can. Walls in the homes bear the marks of the flood waters and mold has begun to spread. Hope s on the Way, (HOTW) a group of Deacons from Chicago, is working with Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Raleigh to offer a helping hand to the flooding victims. In 2012, Hope s on the Way organized a Buckets of Hope effort where cleaning supplies were collected in 5-gallon buckets and sent to towns in New Jersey following Superstorm Sandy. Just last October, HOTW sent buckets to flooded towns in Louisiana and now it is launching a new effort to assist the Raleigh area. With this latest project to help flood victims in the Raleigh Diocese, I m appealing to the generosity of the people of St. John Brebeuf Parish. Items from the list to fill these Buckets of Hope can be dropped off to the Parish Office between now and January 1. Cash donations also are being accepted and can be sent to: Hope s on the Way, attention Deacon John Vidmar, 4327 Deyo, Brookfield, IL It costs approximately $25 to fill a bucket with all of the supplies. Individual items also can be donated. The filled buckets will be brought to a central location and then transported to North Carolina after Christmas. Here is the list of cleaning supplies that are needed for the buckets: 1. Liquid laundry detergent 2, 25-oz bottles or one 50-oz bottle 2. Liquid household cleaner 12 to 16-oz cleaner that can be mixed with water (no bleach) 3. Dish soap 16 to 28-oz bottle any brand 4. 1 can of air freshener (aerosol or pump) 5. 1 plastic scrub brush (No toilet bowl, kitchen or dish brushes) cleaning handy wipes or reusable wipes (no terry cleaning towels) 7. Several sponges (No cellulose due to mold issue) 8. 5 scouring pads (No pads that will rust) clothes pins 10. Clothes line (2, 50-foot or 100-foot line cotton or plastic) bag roll of heavy duty trash bags (30 to 45- gallon size) dust masks pairs of disposable waterproof gloves (rubber or latex) pair of work gloves (cotton or leather, leather palms necessary) If you have any questions or are willing to help in this effort, please call Deacon Andy The people of North Carolina thank you for your generosity, support and prayers. Many Thanks! Thank you from the members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for participating in this year s Christmas Gift-Sharing Program. Remember that all gifts are to be returned to the Church (or Parish office) by this weekend December ALL GIFTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY 12:30 p.m. on DECEMBER 11 as processing begins immediately after each Mass. A special note: Be sure to use Scotch tape when attaching the name of the person receiving your gift (the top part of the form). Also if you have more than one package, please duplicate the label on each package. Many thanks once again for sharing your Christmas with the less fortunate.
10 Page 10 December 11, 2016 St. Vincent de Paul Society December 11: Third Sunday of Advent In today s Gospel Jesus tells us that the good news can be seen, touched, felt, and heard through the lives of God s people. We are now charged to take up the ministry of Jesus, but we can t just ask people to take our word for it; our actions must speak for us. Since Christmas is a time of love and gift giving, please share in Jesus ministry by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who are poor can know the good news of Jesus. Do you or a family you know need a hospital bed? We have an Invacare Electric Hospital bed for anyone in need. Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Society to request delivery. Deacon Andy Beierwaltes Telephone: (847) If God sent His Son into the world today, how long before an ill -informed friend or doctor would say that child is unwanted-abort him. Thank God for Mary's yes to His plan. Lord, grant that we will have the same openness to God's will for us. Let us continue to pray daily: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.
