2 Searching for God and Finding Him in our Weekend Liturgical Celebration We all believe that Christ came down from heaven. The gospel of St. John explains it well: In the beginning was the Word and word was with God and word was God, and this life was the light of the human race. (1:1-3) As we acknowledge that Christ is from above, so is the Church a divine institution, fashioned by divine hand; therefore we can say the Church is as people fashioned by the grace of God, convoked and sustained by the Holy Spirit and achieving the plan of salvation designed by God. Though the Church is divine, it is also human. It is human because it is historical, a human and empirical body of believers, living out the mystery of Christ in diverse places, cultures and situations. Consequently, the Church is primarily the local Church, a people of holiness (1 Pet. 2:9-10), a spiritual house and a holy priesthood preserving in prayer and in praising God (Act 2:42-47). The local Church, in communion with other local Churches, is a pilgrim people of God called out of darkness into the marvelous light. Gradually, a Church identity develops as the Church extends the Mission of Jesus to the four corners of the world. Its goal is salvation offered according to the designs of the divine plan of salvation for humanity. God s blessings are manifested in the local Church as it worships, evangelizes and serves. This new Israel, while going forward in this present world, goes in search of a future and abiding city (Constitution of the Church No. 9). In this local Church, all are invited to a deeper experience of community, which is shaped by the Word, and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. It is a sheepfold, a flock guided by Christ and with its human shepherd. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, Christ is present in the community in the Word proclaimed, and Sacrament celebrated. Sharing at the Eucharistic table enables the assembly s communion with the Lord which energizes the people of God to fulfill their ecclesial tasks: to evangelize, to engage in supporting the conversion process of catechumens, to reconcile those out of communion with them, to be nourished and strengthened to bring the gospel into the marketplaces and from the privacy of our life to public. The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the work of the entire assembly. While various ministries enable that communal worship, all ministers remain a part of the assembly and function so that the entire assembly can give praise and thanks to God.

3 So the inner life of the Church and its Mission brings forth communion and cooperation with one another. The model of ministry and model of collaboration is a direct reflection and consequence of its liturgical celebration. At every Eucharist, the entire assembly invokes the spirit to come down upon them so that the bread and the cup may be transformed and that the community may become one body, one spirit in Christ. The Holy Spirit is active in fashioning an ecclesial and Eucharistic body of Christ. In this century there is a new sense of Church as universal and apostolic. It is happening in our local Church. Our local Church has a vision based on ethnic, racial, political and nationalistic viewpoints. It not only finds itself reaching out to other religions, but also to other local people with a different diversity of language, race and culture. It may be difficult for some to embrace those different from themselves, but we have to follow the command of the Lord to Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, (Mat. 28:19). We consider ourselves as believers of one heart and mind. If that is so, we form a community of believers. People belong to groups outside the immediate family that can be considered as community. With His blood relatives standing outside a house, Jesus turns to those inside listening to His teaching and says, Here are my mother, my sisters and brothers. Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister and mother. (Mark 3: 34-35) My last word for you all is that as we consider the spiritual aspects of the Church and community, I would like to draw your attention to the temporal aspects of the Church. I need you to understand the fact that to take care of this local Church, which God has entrusted to us, and through which our community is built and our spiritual aspects of life are met, is to take care of all its ministries and sustain it the way God wants us to do. Everyone has a responsibility to care for the church as it is God s family in faith. As the family members care for each other we need to care, love and respect each other as brothers and sisters of our heavenly Father gathered every weekend in His name. May I request that you keep the promise you have made in your commitment of contribution of time, talent and treasure to our Church. May God bless you for whatever you are willing to do to keep our community a vibrant one in forms of time, talent and treasure, and being a great steward to His Church.
