Nobody prays or works their way into Heaven by themselves we get to Heaven by being in relationship with others who have fallen in love with Jesus Christ. This is one of the reasons why we will be implementing new procedures and stations for Holy Communion the weekend of March 3rd- 4th. As baptized disciples, we must make an effort to smile, welcome new faces, talk to people and sit in new places to convey the love of God. If you take the time to look around the church, you ll be surprised at what you see. Take for example the placement of the priest celebrant s chair at St. Columbkille. Having the presiding priest sit on an elevated position next to the Tabernacle, far away from the gathered assembly, communicates the wrong message that Father alone is in charge and on the very same level as Jesus Christ. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that the priest celebrant presides over the gathering and directs the assembly s prayer. It goes on to say that the best position for the presider s chair is at the head of the sanctuary, facing the people, unless the tabernacle is in the center behind the altar and any appearance of a throne is to be avoided. (GIRM 310) The priest at Mass is like the orchestra conductor, he is operating in the person of Jesus Christ offering the prayers and sacrifices of the assembly to God the Father. The tabernacle is behind the altar, therefore, the priest celebrant s chair should be located in close proximity to the assembly on the same level as the altar and the ambo. Here is another example. You have probably noticed several pews have been removed from the back of church and in two of the handicapped sections. I made this change after consultation with our pastoral staff and parishioners who expressed concern over movement, safety and mobility issues. The GIRM speaks about seating in the following manner the community worships as a single body united in faith, not simply as individuals who happen to find themselves in one place. Having pews separated from the sections in the back created a space where people could feel anonymous and left alone when at Mass. Also, it left very little space to walk safely between the pews and the entrances. All these adjustments are needed in order to successfully implement our Communion stations and minimize the likelihood of injury. Never forget the Lord is with you always! PARISH FINANCIAL NOTES The offertory collection for the weekend of February 17th and 18th was 24, of which 7, was from Faith Direct (see page 4). God bless each of you for your continued support and generosity to our parish. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT As missionary disciples of Jesus, being formed as a community through Scripture and Sacraments, we are sent into the world to joyfully proclaim the Gospel with our lives. (Mission is about what we do now ) 2.

3 FAITH FORMATION AND PRAYER GOOD FRIDAY, (MARCH 30th) IS A DAY OF FASTING AND ABSTINENCE. ALL FRIDAYS OF LENT ARE DAYS OF ABSTINENCE Abstinence: Catholics, 14 years of age until death, are encouraged to abstain from eating meat on Fridays, in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. You are also to abstain from soups and gravies made from meat products. Fasting: Catholics from their 18th birthday up until their 60th birthday, are encouraged to reduce the amount of food eaten. The Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. LENTEN WEEKDAY MASSES Monday through Thursday Friday Saturday STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays of Lent 7:00 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 7:00 p.m. 7:00 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. 8:15 a.m. 7:00 p.m. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL IS AVAILABLE DAILY FOR YOUR DEVOTION CONFESSION Diocesan-Wide Evening of Confession Wednesday, February 28th 5:00-8:00 p.m. (NO 7:00 p.m. evening Mass, February 28th) Saturdays 3:00-3:30 p.m. After the Saturday 4:00 p.m. Vigil Mass Saturday, March 24th 2:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, March 26th and Wednesday, March 28th 4:00-4:30 and 7:00-7:30 p.m. FATHER JAMIE S HEALING HUMOR A farmer had left a pan of gas in the barnyard. A hunter s dog happened by, went to the pan and lapped up the gas. The dog took off lickety-split, running round and round the yard for two hours. Suddenly, the dog keeled over on its side. The hunter thought the dog was dead. It wasn t dead at all. The dog had just run out of gas. (from A Treasury of Hunting and Fishing Humor, edited by James E. Myers, 1991) Whenever we get tired, worn out or discouraged from carrying life s heavy load, remember the story of the Transfiguration of the Lord. He s calling us from glory to glory. See Him as the Apostles saw Him glorified. That will be our state, too, as we take up our crosses each day and follow in His Footsteps. FATHER CHRIS SPIRITUAL PROGRESS RATHER THAN SPIRITUAL PERFECTION Love is something that we should all be aware of something we should seek in life. But love can sometimes be a confusing thing. Too often our culture equates love with the physical expression of intimacy we call sex. Nothing could be further from the truth. Jesus, who loved everyone perfectly in His lifetime, never had this experience, yet we look to His example of love as one we hope to follow. If we can agree that Jesus loves perfectly, we need to look more closely at how He did this, and Lent gives us the opportunity to do just that. Love, in its most basic essence, means sacrifice. Each Lent, we may give things up, but if we can begin and continue to make true and authentic sacrifices for others during Lent, then we have touched upon the essence of Christ-like love. The giving up we decide to do during Lent must lead to a greater and more prefect form of love. If we are still confused about this, all we have to do is look at Jesus on the Cross. This image is not an image of death, it is an image of perfect sacrificial love, something we are all capable of doing, especially during the Season of Lent. PARISH VISION STATEMENT As the Parish of Saint Columbkille, we strive to be a welcoming, caring, Catholic family that transforms lives, proclaiming the Kingdom of God. (Vision is about who we want to be in the future ) PLANNING TO MARRY IN 2018? MARRIAGE PREPARATION PRE-CANA DAY Couples planning to be married must attend Pre-Cana preparation. Box , Northfield, OH AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES: THE SHACK Saturday, March 10th, 1:00-3:00 p.m. Saint Basil the Great Church, Brecksville The Shack is a film that deals in starkly spiritual terms with the issues of loss, hatred and forgiveness, and it raises a lot of common questions about whose side God is on. In her review of the film for the National Catholic Reporter, here is what Sr. Rose Pacarte (a member of the Daughters of St. Paul, Director of the Pauline Center for Media Studies in Los Angeles had to say: If you know grief and loss, the film offers comfort. If you are angry at God for any reason, test it out at the movie theater. Take a risk during Lent that you may find God in the cinematic art, and in the dark at the multiplex. 9
