3 West Side Presbyterian Church Easter Sunday Celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord The Sacrament of Holy Communion April 1, :45 am and 11:15 am Services What kind of church is Jesus hoping to build on the sinking Rock of Peter? Could it be that right failure is more important to Jesus than right belief? -Eric Elnes As He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fish for people. Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. -Matthew 4:18-20 Then Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. -Mark 9:5-6 But when [Peter] noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Jesus immediately reached out His hand and caught Him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? -Matthew 14:30-31 [Jesus] said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. -Matthew 16:15-18 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to You. But He turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! 4 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest s slave, and cut off his right ear. The slave s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me? -John 18:10-11 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: Before the cock crows, you will deny Me three times. 5 *CALL TO WORSHIP AND OPENING PRAYER The Lord is risen! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Lord is risen indeed! This is the good news by which we are saved: On the third day Jesus rose from the dead. Let us pray: O Lord our God, we give You thanks for the new life You raise up in us through the mystery of our baptism, the sorrow of the heavy cross, the surprise of the empty tomb, the love that death could not destroy. By the power of Your Holy Spirit, fill us with the joy of resurrection, so that we may be a living sign of Your new heaven and new earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Marc Oehler ~ The Response to the Word ~ *RESPONSE OF FAITH Romans 8:26-28 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose. *HYMN 119 The Strife is O er VICTORY PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. In the silence, remember times when, like Peter, you have failed. Consider places in your life right now where you feel like a failure. Sit with the discomfort of this do not run from it or obsess over it. Let it be what it is. Trust that God is with you in it. Now, consider how this failure might become a successful failure. Ask God to help you trust not only in the resurrection event, but in God s resurrecting love and power. Ask for the grace to trust God s ability to enable all things to work together for good. There they discovered that He had risen indeed. Remembering Your goodness and grace, we offer ourselves to You with gratitude as we share this joyful feast. MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and cup; make us one in the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. 14 The Paschal Candle: The early Christian church s calendar began and ended with Pascha: the English transliteration of both the Greek and Hebrew words for Passover. For them, Pascha signified the great deliverance accomplished in the Lord s new Passover. The Paschal Vigil (on the eve of Easter) celebrated the promise of new life, of forgiveness of sins, and of Christ s victory over death. The lighting of the Paschal candle symbolized Christ passing through darkness into light; the Christ Candle returning at the end of our Service of Tenebrae is reminiscent of this. The Paschal Vigil would conclude in the early hours of Easter morning, with the assembled faithful gathering at the table to celebrate the Lord s Supper. For us today, Easter (Pascha) is the central event - the time of transformation, of becoming a resurrection people. During the last prelude, Edward Elgar s stirring Nimrod, from the Enigma Variations, set for brass, timpani, organ, and bells, our Paschal Candle will be lit and brought forward to its stand, where it will be lit for all services through Pentecost. As the Paschal Candle is brought forward, and as we gather at the Lord s table, may we, with Christians of every time and place, remember that Christ is the Light of the world! Thanks be to God! Thanks to the generous craftsmanship of Jack Gardner, we also have a Paschal Candle and stand for use in worship services in the Pulsifer Chapel. Like its counterpart in the Sanctuary, its base is the Advent wreath stand, transformed for use in the season of Easter. 14
