3 IMPORTANT NEWS ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION! We need your help! It is time for our Federation to enter the electronic age by printing many of our forms and announcements electronically. The First Mode, our largest publication, will be coming to you through instead of regular mail. If you do not wish to receive it electronically you will still receive it as usual. Since the cost of printing and mailing the First Mode is one of our biggest expenses, your cooperation in this matter would be a big help. Our August issue is the most expensive one as we send out many forms that are time sensitive. These will be posted on our new website starting this August. We will be counting on your choir director or a designated choir member to pass these out to those of you who need them. In my president s letter I will list the forms that need attention. So, if you agree to have your First Mode mailed electronically (probably twice a year), please send your address to kathanasoulas@verizon.net by June 1, All s will be BCC ed (blind copied) to maintain privacy. Our website should be up and running soon. Your District Supervisor will inform you. MOMENTS FROM THE 2008 EFGOCM CONFERENCE

4 PATRIARCH ATHENAGORAS I AWARD At the Richmond Conference on October 19, 2008, the Patriarch Athenagoras I Award was presented to Sondra Awad after the Divine Liturgy. Occasionally one encounters an individual who is quiet, unassuming and willing to give her all to whatever project she undertakes. Such an individual is Sondra. When the Richmond choir was undergoing a turnover in directors Sondra was always there to serve as director. Currently she has been their director for the past 10 years! Here are some of her qualifications: She works with the choir on understanding the hymns, the proper reverence for a choir s participation in worship and the choir s role in leading the congregation in prayer. Sondra continues her professional development by attending seminars and classes in conducting, etc. Sondra works with the youth at federation conferences and has directed the youth at several federation conferences She is the chairman of the Youth Initiatives for our Metropolis. She has served as clinician in Youth Music at the Church Music Institute sponsored by the Southeastern Federation in Orlando, Fl and in Broomall, PA. She has developed the model of the Liturgical Musical Instructions Program for religious education that was sent to the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians and the Forum s National Chair for Youth Initiatives. She has served as Virginia District Supervisor and on many committees. Every one with whom she works is touched by her pleasant air and ready smile...sondra is a servant s servant, but not in the menial sense; rather, she is a servant in the manner of the women who surrounded the Lord and did His Ministry. Axia Sondra! Thank you to the EFGOCM and the individuals who nominated and supported me in my being awarded the Athanagorous medallion. I am truly honored. Sondra Awad

6 DISTRICT REPORTS MARYLAND DISTRICT Annunciation Cathedral Baltimore Church Music Sunday was indeed joyous. Fifi Nichols, organist, and Stefanos Niktas, psalti, celebrated 40 years of devoted music at the Cathedral and were awarded the Three Angel candelabra from the choir. The Parish also honored Fifi and Stefanos for their years of service. Father Matthew Street and David and Kathy Ferguson were presented with a candlelabra in their honor. Father is now a chaplain in the armed forces and the Fergusons have moved to Knoxville. Every five years awards are given to choir members who reach a milestone. This year they were: Mitsie Doccolo, Dave Ferguson, Joanne Deitz, Eli Donkar, Faye Hayes, Emily Tevault, and Peter Constantinou, psalti. Scholarship winners were Olivia Newport, Sophia Sourlis, and Christian Karzimenski. After the ceremony, the choir gathered for a delightful luncheon at Christopher s. We spent the next few weeks learning the music for the conference. Due to inclement weather our Christmas Program was canceled. However, at the Christmas Eve service the sounds of the choir filled the cathedral with O HOLY NIGHT by Ann Sophocleus and traditional carols by the choir. VIRGINIA DISTRICT On behalf of the Virginia district, I extend a most sincere thank you to the Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral community of Richmond for so graciously hosting a wonderful EFGOCM conference, and to Nick Kyrus, our Guest Conductor, for his inspired leadership. It was a musically and spiritually rewarding weekend for all. Renée Root Annunciation Choir Norfolk Greetings to our sister parishes during this holy season! The Norfolk choir is busy preparing our Christmas repertoire, but what's most prevalent on our minds is our annual Christmas party where we enjoy the fun and fellowship of our choir family! We wish you all a Merry Christmas and hope 2009 is a wonderful year for us all! - Drucie Papafil Saints Constantine and Helen Choir - Newport News We celebrated National Church Music Sunday on October 5 th with the Youth Choir singing the Kievan Chant Trisagion and the Cardiasmenos Praise the Lord with the Adult Choir during the Liturgy, offering a Trisagion for departed church musicians, being recognized with a Commissioning Service honoring all church musicians, and sponsoring a reception to thank the Saints Constantine and Helen community for their constant love and support. After many years of dedicated service, our substitute organist, Connie Anastasiou, has decided to retire. We are indebted to Connie for her hard work, her constant support, and her willingness to always be there when called upon. She has been a blessing to the choir, and we are eternally grateful. Fortunately for us, we have yet another talented musician, Eugenia Gray, who has offered to take over as substitute organist! Thank you, Genie! The choir is saddened by the loss of bass, Joe Valentin, a devoted choir member. Joe was a kind and loving man who was always there with a smile, ready to lend a helping hand. May his memory be eternal. The Adult and Youth Choirs are currently rehearsing for Christmas services and our joint Christmas program with the Sunday School scheduled for December 21st. We wish everyone a blessed Christmas and joyous New Year! - Renée Root Saints Constantine and Helen Richmond The Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral Choir and Communitys of Richmond would like to thank you for your participation in the EFGOCM conference held this past October. It was a wonderful weekend gathering with old friends as well as making new friends. The highlight, of course, was rehearsing the Spathis with Nick Kyrus and celebrating the Divine Liturgy together on Sunday. Again, Richmond thanks you for joining us and for giving your time and talents through your commitment to serving our Lord. At the end of September, our organist of 42 years retired. Elizabeth Eckberg was an integral part of our choir and church family and she will be missed. We were fortunate to have an organist as a member in our community who "stepped up to the plate" and assummed the position. Many of you will remember Anne Conover, our new organist, as one of the two accompanists at the Gallos Concert. Now that the conference has past, our choir is focusing on preparations for the Holy Christmas season. We will have a special concert segment and sing-a-long for the congregation at the Vesperal Liturgy on Christmas Eve. The youth choir will also participate. One of our favorite non-singing activities is preparing a dinner and lunches for the CARITAS program during the week that our community houses some of the many homeless families in our city. We will sing carols with the families and help them share in the joy of the season. What a meaningful way to share our many blessings with those less fortunate. May this Holy season be a blessing to you and your families. -Sondra Awad NEW JERSEY DISTRICT A very Happy and Healthy New Year from New Jersey, District 3. Our district sponsored a Vocal Master Class on Oct. 25, 2008 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Holy Trinity, Westfield, NJ. It featured Chrissellene Petropoulos of Potomac, MD as master teacher. What (Continued on page 7)

7 DISTRICT REPORTS CONTINUED a treat it was! A group of 70 people were captivated by her expertise, her 10 Vocal Commands, her humor and ability to show improvement of a singer on the spot! Many people stayed an extra hour and a half to hear more. On the evaluations that were provided all wanted a repeat engagement. So that is what we are doing on Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM as a Church Music Institute. It will be a double header with Marina Alexander combining her expertise as conductor and collaborating with Chrissellene. Please see the flyer in this issue of the First Mode. If anyone wishes to come and stay overnight the following are possibilities for hotels. There is no special rate as we can t guarantee the hotel a specific amount of people. We can say, however, that you will find the CMI very worth while. Convenient Hotels Westfield Inn (Best Western) , many stores within walking distance Kenilworth Inn near Greek store The Spirit of Lent Concert Since 1992 our district has continued this Lenten Concert on the last Friday before Holy Week in various churches in New Jersey directed by Dennis Spyros, of blessed memory. This year on Friday, April 10, 2009 at 8:00 PM we continue this tradition at St. Nicholas, Wyckoff, NJ with Kathryn Athanasoulas conducting and Hope Demitry, organist. We look forward to presenting this program in our most northern church. Christmas Eve following the early evening Vesperal Divine Liturgy. Adapted by our former Choir Director Paul Mavromihalis, the script consists of an introduction and Scripture readings, each followed by either Orthodox Liturgical Christmas hymns or traditional Western Christmas Carols sung by the Choir and accompanied by organist, Ted Pandel. The Sunday School students, under Pageant Director Angelique Demetris, participated as readers and costumed characters in the story of the Birth of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Following the pageant, a family reception was held in the Community Center. On January 11, 2009, the Choir once again will attend the Boar s Head and Yule Log Festival performed annually at St. Peter s Lutheran Church in Lafayette Hill, PA. This medieval festival dates back to England in the 13th century and combines dancing, acting, costumes, and pageantry with music by the choir and orchestra and tells the Christmas story. It s an experience that is long remembered. Our Pastor, Rev. Fr. Christ Kontos, and our Choir Members join in sending wishes to all for a very happy 2009! We look forward to hosting you at the next Federation Conference, October 15 18, Save the date! Virginia Botsis, Director District Supervisor PENNSYLVANIA DISTRICT St. George Choir, Media, Pennsylvania Greetings from St. George of Media, PA. Best wishes to all for a happy and healthy New Year! On Sunday, December 21st, following Liturgy, the Choir joined with the children of our Sunday School to present a beautiful pageant, The Nativity Story. Jan Jelepis coordinated the pageant, which displayed a beautiful picture of the Birth of Jesus Christ. The pageant ended with the Choir singing Carols. The St. George Choir has been chanting a cappella for many years. However, for the pageant we were accompanied by David Christianson, PhD. David is a biochemist by vocation and a renowned organist in the greater Philadelphia area by avocation. Following the Christmas Day Liturgy on December 25th, the Choir once again sang the Kalanda and Carols. The congregation was invited to join in the singing. SAVE THE DATES!! The 2009 EFGOCM Conference is scheduled for October at St. Luke in Broomall, PA. I will have the extreme honor to guest conduct the Gallos 3. Presbytera Anna Gallos is currently in the process of combining the Greek and English into one book. You will be notified as soon as it is available. I hope to see everyone in Broomall! The 2010 EFGOCM Conference is scheduled for October here at Saints Constantine and Helen in Newport News, VA. We will sing the Cardiasmenos Liturgy, conducted by Dr. James Maniatis from Denver, CO. We look forward to hosting our sister churches and hope you will be able to attend! - Renée Root --Helen J. Beldecos, Director St. Luke Choir, Broomall, Pennsylvania As is traditional at St. Luke s, the Annual Christmas Candlelight Pageant was presented by the Choir and the Sunday School on
