Services from November to Christmas From the Music Dep t Celebrating the Animals Antarctic Chalice handed over Your spiritual well-being Christmas stall Concerts & Recitals Contact The Transitional Cathedral admin@christchurchcathedral.co.nz Every now and again it is helpful to think about our life of prayer. Jesus often went into the hills to be alone with God and to pray. These times of intimate communing with God became a well-spring of joy that gave him the resources he needed for the times when life is difficult. Jesus also spent a lot of his time teaching his disciples to pray. The novel The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce (Black Swan, UK, 2013) tells the story of someone who persists in prayer. I am not sure whether the central character, Harold Fry, or the author would think of this story as an account of someone at prayer, but it offers a helpful illustration of the impact of prayer. In the novel, the central character Harold Fry receives a letter out of the blue from a former work colleague, who has written to let Harold know that she, Queenie, is dying of cancer. When he gets it, he drops everything, leaves his wife and his home, and starts walking to Queenie s home. His desire is that Queenie will keep living and wait for him to arrive. Harold lives on the South Devon coast in the south of England. Now, Queenie lives on the east coast of Northumbria, at the other end of the country. So Harold walks for three months. Along the way, some very interesting things start to happen. He begins to find his real self, his deepest desires, old fights he needs to let go of, deep hurts and old scars that rise up crying out for healing, so much so that he frequently bursts into tears. He becomes acutely aware of the beauty of creation; the space in his heart for other people that he did not know he had. About a month into the journey, when Harold s The Cathedral and the Cathedral choir both have facebook pages. Like them to receive updates and news. 2 From Page 1 shoes are falling apart and the blisters have become unbearable, he has a crisis of faith. He says to himself, This is ridiculous. Queenie might die before I get there and this walk would have been for nothing. How can I hope to keep her alive by walking and willing her to wait? I should just take a train or a bus and I will be there in a day. But to Harold s surprise, his walk has inspired faith and hope in others. Queenie, his dying friend, has sat up in her bed with new attentiveness and hope, because Harold s walk, ridiculous as it is, has filled her with new hope. Harold s wife Maureen begins a similar journey of opening out to others and attending to the care of her soul. Harold s journey becomes a major media story because they say the nation wants more faith and less sensibleness. So Harold keeps on walking. So it is to be with us. Harold s walk is a useful metaphor for our life of prayer; it is regular and persistent, journeying with an open heart toward God. Christian prayer is a journey of the heart. It is a heart that is open to God; it is the cry of recognition and love. It is the simple look toward heaven. It is the response of faith and love to Christ who in turn opens our hearts to the Father. How do we go about praying? There are as many ways of praying as there are different Christian traditions. Whatever your preferred way of praying, it is helpful to set aside time for prayer each day. A special place to pray is helpful as well, whether that is a bedroom or private space, or in a garden. Go to that place each day for about 20 minutes. You might like to try centring prayer. Sit upright, with your back straight and feet flat on the ground. Think of a word or phrase such as such as love or peace or come, Lord Jesus and allow that word or phrase to be a focus for your mind. Some find it helpful to say this word or phrase gently in their imagination with each intake of breathe. This is an ancient way of praying that was suggested by the saints and mystics of old. In fact, they would recommend doing this twice daily, say for 20 minutes at the beginning and end of each day. Slowly, gradually, we are drawn imperceptibly to a deeper awareness of God, so much so that hearts are transformed; God helps us attend to our true desires and melts away false images of ourselves. The prayer becomes like water gradually washing away bitterness and resentment, and gives us clear sightedness to see in ourselves the human being God has created us to be. The season of Advent is nearly upon us, the season that invites us to be open to the many ways God comes to us. What better time to check that a pattern of prayer is in place. All seeing God, teach us to be open with you about our needs, to seek your support in our trials, to admit before you our sins and to thank you for your goodness, through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen. (NZPB-HKMA page 631) Dean Lawrence. 4 from the music dep t. A Christchurch spring season is something the whole world should experience. Signs all around us remind of rebirth and new life. That amazing smell that occurs from about mid-october to the 1st of November is somewhat nature s apology for what we have just endured with months of short days and southern winds. Growth is constantly celebrated in the Cathedral Choir with letting the hems down some of the choristers cassocks every month or so. Those boys are constantly growing. Thanks be to God. Eventually the older boys pass the baton to younger choristers when they leave after Year 8, and the process of learning, discovery, and maturing into the role of chorister is handed down to the next generation. So it has been with our Cathedral choristers since The Cathedral Choir is the strongest link (genealogical, if you will) to our Cathedral s initial founding and by birth right to the 900-year-old English choral tradition. In the everchanging landscape of Christchurch, it is comforting to so many to have the Cathedral Choir be a constant link with the past and pointing to the future in each upcoming generation of singers. It s a blessing to witness this. To celebrate this link of past and present, this Sunday 6 November we welcomed old choristers back for an Old Choristers Evensong at 5pm. Over a dozen old boys, choir men, and Godley Scholars joined the Cathedral Choir for this festive service. This was truly a celebration of generations of the spiritual fabric of ChristChurch Cathedral. We have also welcomed our newest choristers. The Year 4 trainees sang their first Cathedral service on Sunday 30 October and we look forward to seeing them more regularly during the remainder of this term. We took the opportunity of their presence to take this year s choir photographs - serious, and less so. Later this month we welcome visiting composer and conductor Richard Webster to lead us in a hymn festival on Sunday 20 November at 5.00pm. I ve known Richard for many years and he was a great inspiration to me during my University days and as a budding church musician in the late 1990s. During those days Richard was Organist & Choirmaster of the celebrated choir programme at St Luke s Parish Church in suburban Chicago, where he led one of the finest men and boys choirs in the USA. He is presently Director of Music at Boston s famous Trinity Church where his influence has breathed new life into that choir programme. In addition, he is a celebrated composer of anthems and hymn arrangements. The Cathedral Choir will be joined by a majestic brass ensemble and our Assistant Organist Harry Meehan. Thank you to the Canterbury Branch of the Royal School of Church Music for co-sponsoring this event with the Cathedral. Thank you to all who have supported this year s organ recital series by attendance and/or donations. Proceeds from this series help to underwrite the daily operations of the Cathedral. The final organ recital of the year happens Tuesday 29 November at 1.10pm where I look forward to playing Charles-Marie Widor s Symphonie Gothique. This monumental organ symphony features the Christmas plainchant Puer natus est and as such will be a way for the Cathedral to usher in the seasons of Advent and Christmas. A joyous spring to all, John Linker, Director of Music

6 Celebrating the Animals For the first time since 2010, the Cathedral hosted the annual Animal Service on Sunday 9 October. The cathedral resounded with the sounds of dogs, cats, and budgies, which added to the usual rich tapestry of prayer and music typical of Cathedral worship. The address was given by Mr Barry Helem, CEO of SPCA Canterbury. He issued a call to reconsider the implication of the first creation account in the Book of Genesis in the bible. In this account of creation, God decides to create human beings giving them dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the farmed in battery style conditions from which there is no escape. He asked that our society have compassion for all animals that are exploited for science and for entertainment, and exhorted The service, however, was also laden with hope. All the animals present were received an individual blessing. Prayers of thanksgiving were offered for animals that have shared our personal lives and been loving companions and faithful servants; and thanksgiving prayers were offered for those who care for animals, who work to protect them and who are diligent in their animal husbandry. Dean Lawrence cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth (Genesis 1:26). Dominion comes from the Hebrew word Yorade which means to come down to: to have communion with and compassion for, says Barry Helam, which when we apply it to our fellow creatures, the animals, it is a very clear instruction. Nothing can be more obvious than that, in that we owe to all living things that share the breath of life with us, for each in their own special way bear God s unmistakable mark, and are in our care. Mr Helem challenged the congregation to remember abused animals of all species who live in fear and despair and in pain and suffering; and to remember those who are tortured and used for experimentation those us to ask for forgiveness for our human callousness and cruelty that continues to be inflicted on so many animals. For many years pupils from Yokohama High School in Japan have made an annual visit to Christchurch and one of their first stops is a visit to the Cathedral for a service of welcome and blessing. One of the pupils spoke in perfect English, thanking us for hosting them, and the Dean spoke, also in perfect English. We look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.

8 The role of a Cathedral A sermon preached by Rev d John Paton, Precentor of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford (UK) during his visit to Christchurch in August this year. Which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Luke 14: 28 That text and I have a history. It was set for the second time I had to preach in the other Christ Church, in Oxford. Some of you may know that we have a massive squat tower in one corner of our main quadrangle; but what isn t generally known is that it s unfinished. It was due to have a great spire on the top, a complicated confection of wood stone and wrought iron that would have made a wonderful mooring station for zeppelins if that form of transport had ever taken off. It seemed to me back then that if I was going to do the gospel passage justice I d better try and find out why the tower in Tom Quad had never been completed. So I sent an to our archivist, she did a bit of research, and the reply came back, Governing Body is still awaiting a report from a sub-committee. It s so heartening to discover that we needn t give up hope. It s not about buildings, of course. Jesus has just told the crowds, Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. He meant, you have to act as if you ve already been convicted by the world; and once you ve started you can t turn back. Carrying Christ s cross is not something you can offer to do on Saturday afternoons, as part of the monthly roster. Perhaps it sounds a bit grim and heaven knows life sometimes can be; but suffering is not the point, so much as endurance and constancy. We ve all got tasks to do as part of our commitment to the faith of our calling; we all have the duty to become whatever it is we re meant to be, and of course we know it s a life-long thing. We re all busy working that out in our different ways for ourselves, and I m sure you re doing fine; so I won t trouble you about that. This morning I want to focus on what it might mean for a cathedral. Which of you does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? What are these non-negotiable tasks that, as ChCh cathedral, you have to carry on to the bitter end? I m sure there are many, but let me suggest a few. First, a cathedral is a place where heaven and earth come together, where humans are lifted up to God and God loves to come down to them. This happens in all kinds of ways, but in a cathedral it s part of what the choir is for. The singing isn t here just to give us a treat and make the worship palatable: it s priestly work, at its transcendent best it plays its part in lifting us up towards God and helping us to tune in to his response to us. God will come whether or not you call him, the bread and the wine will do their work, the word will take root; but it s the choir, your musicians, your Precentor: it s them that bring us to the place where that can happen. Cherish them and their families, they deserve their place out at the front. Cherish them, as of course you cherish each other. This is my second point, and there will be 5. We come here as a community of love, gathered by God s love for us. We re known, we re numbered, we re given a name. This is the work of a shepherd. Pastoral work isn t always easy in a cathedral. The Dean of Worcester used to tell his people, if you want to be looked after you need to go to your parish church. It sounded brutal, but it had a kernel of truth. The cathedral is here for the diocese, for the world; for the tens of thousands who don t come, as well as for you gathered here. How are you going to pastor them? Well, the work of a shepherd isn t primarily leadership, as people often assume; yes, a shepherd may lead the flock from one place to another but usually only to bring them to food and water and to make sure they re kept safe. The pastoral staff of your bishop is a guarantee that feeding and safeguarding will happen here; your Dean and the other staff will do what they can; but our prime pastor is the Lord himself, and he has passed on a lot of his work to each of us. Part of the cost that each of us must count in joining a cathedral congregation is that we ll be asked to tend each other. Thirdly, it s not just us, it s a network of communities throughout the world, throughout time, joining hands and looking together towards the glorious light of the Kingdom. I may be among Anglican friends when I m in my stall in Oxford, but the prayers on the hour are led by a Russian Orthodox or a Methodist, I buy my bread from a Baptist, I may go and hear a lecture from a Catholic, say hello to the imam on the way, get a Christmas card from the rabbi. We all have our place in the network, our links of communication, the channels we patrol. It s true in any church, but a cathedral is a very tight hub where everything comes together. People coming in here from the city, from the world, need to find that this is the place that helps them make sense of it all, a place where they were already expected. I m not saying that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a giant Facebook page, but we ve learnt a lot from social media and I think the church needs to learn more than most. Degrees of separation are incredibly close. Each of us here this morning will probably be only four degrees of separation away from the Pope, heaven help us; or just three degrees from the Archbishop of Canterbury, heaven help him. They say New Zealanders are all no more than two degrees of separation from each other. And each one of us is only one degree from the people who need us most. So your contribution, what you are, what you do or say, can have a huge effect, far beyond what you d have imagined possible. Throw it in and see how far the ripples go. Use the cathedral as part of that network and use it powerfully. ** Fourthly, a cathedral can give a city its moral compass. Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford in England might just be grubby little 1960s shopping centres without the great building that people look to for uplift and guidance. Like many people I ve been trying to find my way round Christchurch and I ve been finding it difficult for lack of a landmark. I don t need to tell you how badly you need to get a solid visible and beloved presence back at the heart of things. This building is a miracle, I couldn t have believed how powerful it is, just as it is; but when you take back your position literally at the heart of things, and symbolically up there as the guardian of the myth of the foundation of this city, the settlers putting God first and building churches, a story that is still there deep in the heart of your neighbours, whether God-fearing or not, the sooner the world will applaud; because believe me we are all out there watching and listening to what goes on here. University, council, schools, business, industry, government; Christchurch Cathedral is up there with
9 Antarctic Chalice handed over Those attending the annual Antarctic Service recently may have been slightly surprised when the Dean handed ovber the chalice to be taken to the ice for the season, to see it immediately handed back! No, it was not because it is no longer needed but because the first Chaplain to got to the ice was leaving later and the Chalice was going ot be in his custody. So Dean Lawrence handed the Chalice to the Chaplain a few days later and it is now in the Chapel of the Snows. The silver and gilt chalice is used in services at the Chapel of the Snows at McMurdo. It was given, in 1987 by Miss Betty Bird to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Robert Falcon Scott s visit and death at the South Pole in The chalice is committed to the care of the Cathedral during the winter months and is handed over to the chaplain who accompanies the southbound Antarctic team each year. This tradition has continued since There is an apocryphal story recently found to be untrue: that the chalice accompanied Miss Bird s great-great uncle, then Lt Joseph Bird, to the Antarctic with Sir James Clark Ross 1839 expedition. This was the expedition which discovered and named Ross Island and the three prominent mountains of the island: Erebus and Terror (after Ross s ships) and Bird (after Joseph). It is more likely that the chalice (made in about 1910) has some particular association with Scott s 1912 journey. Swathed in mystery it is an evocative symbol of the continuity of past and present human endeavour, courage and the thirst for new knowledge and discovery in Antarctica. The Cathedral has many other links with the southern continent. In the north transept were the USA and US Antarctic Programme flags presented to the Cathedral by the Programme. There was a plaque presented to the people of New Zealand by the US Navy, commemorating all those explorers who have headed south, and on the outside of the tower, facing the Square, was a further plaque in memory of those who have lost their lives in Antarctica. The large New Zealand Flag which hung against the organ pipes, was flown at Scott Base by Sir Edmund Hillary s party in Some of these important treasures have been retrieved from the Cathedral, and we hope to access the others in due course. The role of a Cathedral (Cont d) them, but no one else has the same appeal to the heart, the mind and the soul. I could go on. Some of you will say I ve done that already. But my final point is this. What you do is secondary. God made us a promise of life, we heard that in the first reading. A choice between life and death. All of us have made that choice, that s why we re here this morning, able to offer the hope of life in its fullness to any who wish to join us. But having made that choice, what exactly does God want us to do? What, precisely, is his plan for us? No one ever tells you this, so I m going to let you in to the secret of God s favourite word. All over England at the moment girls and boys are kneeling down at their bedside every night and saying, God, please tell me; should I be a lawyer or a doctor? Do you want me to take music or English? Science or arts? And God looks down from his big heavenly throne and he says, Whatever. Just do it. You ve asked me, that shows you still trust me a bit; so just do it, go for it, choose a way and we ll walk it together. You ve got some big decisions to make in Christchurch, and God is as puzzled as the rest of us which hat you re going to pull the rabbit out of. But the biggest decision was made long ago. You committed yourselves, you made the good choice, you accepted the promise. Each step you take, not just the big ones, determines the future; and at every step the shepherd is with you leading you to where there is food and safety, taking you to the place where you will grow and thrive and the kingdom will flourish. The cost was calculated by the one who took up the cross and carried it to the end; and when he did his calculations, what will the cost be?, when he added up the cost he built in the profit and the gift, the grace and love that would fill the lives of those who stayed constant. That is the life he has promised us; that is our hope, and that is our prayer. ** my-view-karl-du-fresne/ /two-degrees-of-separationin-nz
