WELCOME Tenebrae factae sunt, dum crucifixissent Jesum Darkness covered the whole land when Jesus was crucified Tenebrae is a moving descent into the darkest hours of the church year; the word Tenebrae means darkness, shadow, and obscurity. This worship continues the great three days, or the Triduum. Since the fourth century, with great devotion the church has honored the days of the Lord s Passion, venerating the wood of the cross, on which hung the Savior of the world. There is a starkness in this liturgy that exposes the paradox at the heart of the Christian gospel. This day is good because Christ has conquered death and won for us the victory of life. We rejoice and venerate the Cross as his victory, still standing over evil, sin, and death today. And the stark worship of this day recalls the horror of how the Sinless One was killed, bruised for our iniquity. In this liturgy, we hear passages of scripture and sacred music and are called to prayer as we enter the darkness of the night of sin and death. This darkness of Good Friday is answered by the lighting of the Paschal Candle in the dawn of Easter s Vigil. On Good Friday, most congregations in The Episcopal Church collect an offering to support ministry in the Holy Land, so that Christ s saving presence is shared where his life was lived. An offering plate is located in the back of the Church or you may text a contribution to (302) At the conclusion of the service, please wait until exit lighting has been restored before you leave the Church in silence. We hope you will return to share in the worship of Easter. You are welcome here. At the sounding of the tower bell, please stand, as able, and join the Choir in extolling the glory of the cross by singing Hymn 166 Sing, My Tongue, the Glorious Battle (blue) Hymnal 1982 The Clergy kneel before the altar and the People kneel, as able, rising with the Clergy. Celebrant People Celebrant Please be seated for Blessed be our God. For ever and ever. Amen. Let us pray. Almighty God, we beseech thee graciously to behold this thy family, for which our Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed, and given up into the hands of wicked men, and to suffer death upon the cross; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. The Shadow of Betrayal Matthew 26:17-25 On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover? He said, Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, he took his place with the twelve; and while they were eating, he said, Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me. And they became greatly distressed and began to say to him

one after another, Surely not I, Lord? He answered, The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born. Judas, who betrayed him, said, Surely not I, Rabbi? He replied, You have said so. Read by Hardy Drane All then recite Psalm 70 Deus, in adjutorium Be pleased, O God, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me. Let those who seek my life be ashamed and altogether dismayed; let those who take pleasure in my misfortune draw back and be disgraced. Let those who say to me Aha! and gloat over me turn back, because they are ashamed. Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; let those who love your salvation say for ever, Great is the Lord! But as for me, I am poor and needy; come to me speedily, O God. You are my helper and my deliverer; O Lord, do not tarry. Remain seated or kneel in silence before Following the prayer, the first candle is extinguished. The Shadow of Destruction Wisdom 2:12-20 Let us lie in wait for the righteous man, because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions; he reproaches us for sins against the law, and accuses us of sins against our training. He professes to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord. He became to us a reproof of our thoughts; the very sight of him is a burden to us, because his manner of life is unlike that of others, and his ways are strange. We are considered by him as something base, and he avoids our ways as unclean; he calls the last end of the righteous happy, and boasts that God is his father. Let us see if his words are true, and let us test what will happen at the end of his life; for if the righteous man is God s child, he will help him, and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries. Let us test him with insult and torture, so that we may find out how gentle he is, and make trial of his forbearance. Let us condemn him to a shameful death, for, according to what he says, he will be protected. Read by Samantha Anthony Anthem Thomas Morley ( ) Nolo mortem peccatoris. Father, I am thine only Son, sent down from heaven mankind to save. Father, all things fulfilled and done according to thy will, I have. Father, my will now all is this: Nolo mortem peccatoris. Father, behold my painful smart, taken for man on every side; even from my birth to death most tart, no kind of pain I have denied, but suffered all, and all for this: Nolo mortem peccatoris. Remain seated or kneel in silence before Following the prayer, the second candle is extinguished.

The Agony of the Soul Matthew 26:36-46 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, Sit here while I go over there and pray. He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be grieved and agitated. Then he said to them, I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me. And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want. Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, So, could you not stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again he went away for the second time and prayed, My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done. Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand. Read by Ken Hilk Please stand and sing Hymn 158 Ah, Holy Jesus, How Hast Thou Offended Hymnal 1982 Please be seated or kneel in silence before Following the prayer, the third candle is extinguished. The Arrest Matthew 26:47-56 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him. At once he came up to Jesus and said, Greetings, Rabbi! and kissed him. Jesus said to him, Friend, do what you are here to do. Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him. Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way? At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. Read by The Rev. Ann Urinoski Anthem Henry Purcell ( ) Hear my prayer, O Lord, and let my crying come unto thee.

Remain seated or kneel in silence before Following the prayer, the fourth candle is extinguished. The Trial before Caiaphas Matthew 26:57-66 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, in whose house the scribes and the elders had gathered. But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest; and going inside, he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end. Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward and said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days. The high priest stood up and said, Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you? But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus said to him, You have said so. But I tell you, From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict? They answered, He deserves death. Read by Frank Czeiner Please stand and sing Hymn 474 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Hymnal 1982 Please be seated or kneel in silence before Following the prayer, the fifth candle is extinguished. The Trial before Pilate Mark 15:1-15 As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? He answered him, You say so. Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate asked him again, Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you. But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them, Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews? For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again, Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews? They shouted back, Crucify him! Pilate asked them, Why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Crucify him! So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. Read by Tucker Giddens

The Choir sings Psalm 22 Deus, Deus meus Chant: Bruce Barber (b. 1960) My God, my God, look upon me; why hast thou forsaken me? and art so far from my health and from the words of my complaint? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season also I take no rest. And thou continuest holy, O thou Worship of Israel. Our fathers hoped in thee; they trusted in thee and thou didst deliver them. They called upon thee and were holpen; they put their trust in thee and were not confounded. But as for me, I am a worm and no man; a very scorn of men and the outcast of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out their lips and shake their heads saying, He trusted in the Lord that he would deliver him; let him deliver him if he will have him. But thou art he that took me out of my mother s womb; thou wast my hope, when I hanged yet upon my mother s breasts. I have been left unto thee ever since I was born; thou art my God, even from my mother s womb. O go not from me; for trouble is hard at hand, and there is none to help me. Many oxen are come about me; fat bulls of Bashan close me in on every side. They gape upon me with their mouths, as it were a ramping and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart also in the midst of my body is even like melting wax. My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my gums, and thou shalt bring me into the dust of death. For many dogs are come about me, and the council of the wicked layeth siege against me. They pierced my hands and my feet: I may tell all my bones: they stand staring and looking upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O Lord; thou art my succour, haste thee to help me. Remain seated or kneel in silence for Following the prayer, the sixth candle is extinguished. The Crucifixion Luke 23:33-43 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one! The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself! There was also an inscription over him, This is the King of the Jews. One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us! But the other rebuked him, saying, Do

you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. He replied, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Read by The Rev. Stephen Setzer Anthem Antonio Lotti ( ) He was crucified for our sake under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. Remain seated or kneel for Following the prayer, the seventh candle is extinguished. The Darkest Hour Mark 15:33-39 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. At three o clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani? which means, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, Listen, he is calling for Elijah. And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down. Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, Truly this man was God s Son! Read by Bruce Barber The Reproaches adapted from Tomás Luis de Victoria (c ) O my people, what have I done unto thee? or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me. Because I brought thee forth from a land of Egypt: thou hast prepared a Cross for thy Savior. Agios o Theos; Holy God. Agios, ischyros; Holy mighty! Agios, athanatos, eleison imas; Holy and immortal, have mercy upon us. Because I led thee through the desert forty years, and fed thee with manna, and brought thee into a land exceeding good: thou hast prepared a Cross for thy Savior. Agios o Theos; Holy God. Agios, ischyros; Holy, mighty! Agios, athanatos, eleison imas; Holy and immortal, have mercy upon us. What more have I done for thee, that I have not done? I indeed did plant thee, O my vineyard, with exceeding fair fruit: and thou art become very bitter unto me: for vinegar, mingled with gall, thou gavest me when thirsty; and have pierced with a spear the side of thy Savior. Agios o Theos; Holy God. Agios, ischyros; Holy, mighty! Agios, athanatos, eleison imas; Holy and immortal, have mercy upon us. O my people, what have I done unto thee? or wherein have I wearied thee? Testify against me.

Antiphon Crux fidelis King John IV of Portugal ( ) Faithful Cross, above all other, one and only noble tree, None in foliage, none in blossom, none in fruit thy peer may be. Sweetest wood, and sweetest iron, sweetest weight is hung on thee. Venantius Honorius Fortunatus, 540?-600? (translated by John Mason Neale, ) Remain seated or kneel in silence for Following the prayer, the eighth candle is extinguished. The Burial of Jesus Mark 15:40-46 There were also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. These used to follow him and provided for him when he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. When evening had come, and since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock. He then rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Read by The Rev. Ruth Beresford Adoramus te, Christe Claudio Monteverdi ( ) Adoramus te, Christe, et benedicimus tibi, quia per tuam sanctam crucem redemisti mundum. Domine, miserere nobis. Antiphon of the Holy Cross We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless thee, because by thy holy cross thou hast redeemed the world. Lord, have mercy upon us. Remain seated or kneel in silence for Following the prayer, the ninth candle is extinguished. Celebrant People Celebrant Christ for our sakes became obedient unto death. Even the death of the cross. Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, we pray thee, set thy passion, cross, and death between thy judgment and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Give mercy and grace to the living; pardon and rest to the dead; to thy holy Church peace and concord; and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.
