Please pray for: Adrianne Dianne Mouton Landry who died recently. Centennial News, April 22, 2018 Bishop Provost Ordained - On April 23, 2007, another native son of would be ordained for the Episcopacy. Msgr. Glen John Provost, a native of Lafayette, was serving as Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, when he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI to serve as the third Bishop of the Diocese of Lake Charles. Bishop Provost was ordained by Archbishop Hughes of New Orleans. His Co-Consecrators were Bishop Jarrell and Bishop Speyrer, who served as the first Bishop of Lake Charles. Bishop Jarrell and Bishop Speyrer are both native sons to the Diocese, from Opelousas and Leonville respectively. The year 2018 is joyous and wonderful for in this year we are privileged to celebrate 100 years of Catholicism, 100 years of spreading the Love of God to the people of South Louisiana by providing the sacraments, celebrating Mass, encouraging the afflicted, visiting the sick and comforting the dying. These have been 100 years of blessing for all of us who have had the privilege to be the face of God to the people of Acadiana. As we celebrate, however, it is also important to recognize that there have been times when those who have been called to ministry in order that the Lord s forgiveness, healing and peace may be experienced by all, have been the cause of much pain and suffering within our community. In order that through the joy of our celebration, those who have been hurt by the Church s ministers may not be forgotten, Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel and the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette wish to recognize, as part of our Century of Love, those among us who deserve our continued prayers, support and love as they heal from the wounds of abuse at the hands of those, who, by virtue of orders, were called to be ministers of the Church. To this end, at a prayer service for all victims of abuse in any form, Bishop Deshotel invites the people of the Diocese of Lafayette to join him in a Eucharistic Prayer Service and a dedication of a monument that will serve as a reminder to all of our constant need to keep in prayer all those who have been hurt by the Church s ministers. The Prayer Service and Dedication Ceremony will take place at 6:00 pm on Friday, April 27, 2018, in front of Immaculata Chapel, adjacent to the Diocese of Lafayette Central Office, 1408 Carmel Drive in Lafayette. All are invited to this prayerful event. Community Life & Evangelization Welcome You enter this Church...not as a stranger, but as a guest of God. He is your heavenly Father. Come, then, with joy in your heart and thanks on your lips into His presence, offering Him your love and service. Be grateful to the strong and loyal ones who, in the name of Jesus Christ, built this place of worship, and to all who have beautified it and hallowed it with their prayers and praise. Ask His blessing on those who love His house of faith as the inspiration of their labor, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit, and may that blessing rest on you, both on your going out and your coming in.

7 Stewardship and Development Saint Fidelis Sigmaringen Stewardship Saint for April Given the name Mark Rey at his birth in 1577, our stewardship saint for April grew up in Sigmaringen, a town located in present-day Germany. He was the son of the town s affluent burgomeister (mayor) and studied law and philosophy at the renowned University of Freiburg. As a student, Mark made prayer a priority in his daily life. He also spent time visiting the sick. He embraced a humble, chaste and simple lifestyle. He earned a doctorate in canon and civil law, became a prominent lawyer and soon gained a reputation for representing those who had no money to pay. Mark was affectionately nicknamed the poor man s lawyer. He was known to be extraordinarily generous, and committed himself to working with the poor. Dismayed by the greed and corruption he found among his counterparts in the legal profession and in the courts of law, Mark abandoned his law practice and entered the Capuchin religious community. He took the name Fidelis, which is Latin meaning faithful. He studied for the priesthood and after ordination, celebrated his first Mass in 1612 on the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi (October 4). After his ordination, Father Fidelis was assigned to preaching and hearing confessions. It was reported that a large number of converts were accepted into the Church because of his zealous evangelizing efforts. He was devoted to Saint Francis of Assisi and revealed that devotion in his pastoral care of the poor and sick. During a severe epidemic in a city in which his friary was located, he cared for and cured many. In 1621 Father Fidelis was sent to begin missionary work in Switzerland, a territory that had experienced much bloodshed as a result of growing tensions among a number of religious movements of the expanding Reformed traditions. All of these movements were violently opposed to the Catholic faith at the time. His writings, preaching and pastoral ministry converted many in Switzerland to Catholicism. But many others, enraged by his missionary work, threatened his life. On April 24, 1622, while traveling on the road between preaching missions, Father Fidelis was attacked by a group of armed men, beaten and hacked to death. He was 44 years old. Fidelis once wrote: It is because of faith that we exchange the present for the future. He was canonized in 1746 and his feast day is April 24th.
