2 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER SOTERI On June 19 th, we as Orthodox Christians will celebrate one of the most solemn acts of worship during the Liturgical year, the Service of Kneeling, which is the Vespers of the Monday of the Holy Spirit. During this service on the day of Pentecost, we glorify God by recounting His great acts of salvation in history. We solemnly kneel before God recognizing our sinfulness and we earnestly implore Him for forgiveness. We pray for God s visitation, protection, and renewal through a fresh outpouring of the Spirit. We sing triumphantly, Who is so great a God as is our God? You alone are the God who does wonders! When we kneel at that special service, let us pray that the Holy Spirit continues to help us grow in the glory of Christ. The new life in the Spirit is like a spiritual treasure in clay pots outwardly decaying but inwardly being renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of truth, present in all places and filling all things, the treasury of blessings and giver of life: come and abide in us. Cleanse us from all impurity and save our souls, gracious Lord. Christos Anesti, From our President My beloved St. Stefanos, it is with great joy that I announce that we were blessed by the generosity of our parishioners in donating the much needed funds to replace our existing Air Conditioning system with a brand new system at our Spring General Assembly. The Parish Council and I want to thank each and every person that made a contribution towards this expense. Every dollar sent in meant that we were one step closer to our goal of replacing the Air Conditioning system that was put into place many many years ago. Our community came together in a time of need for our church and our parishioners will benefit greatly from all the love shown. As a Parish Council, we have been working towards improving St. Stefanos in many way and have been succeeding. Slowly but surely we are working on many capital improvements to our community that in the long run, will benefit not only our present community but future parishioners of St. Stefanos as well. I want to remind every one that as we approach the summer months, we, the Parish Council still hope to see every in church. We are aware that in the summer months, things are not as structured in everyone's lives and vacations are planned. However, we hope that every one still keeps St. Stefanos in the hearts and minds. We also want to congratulate all the students on finishing another school year and wish those that are graduating a successful time on their future endeavors. 3 PHILOPTOCHOS Chapter 5009 The Ecclesiastical year is quickly coming to an end and summer is ahead of us. We have had an exciting and busy year with accomplishments we should be very proud of. Most notably, we fed nearly 1000 hungry people this year. Thank you to everyone who donated their time, talents and treasures to make this such a successful project. We had an enjoyable Afternoon Tea where we provided countless garments and accessories to Dress for Success along with $800 donation to such a worthy cause. We baked hundreds of dozens of cookies in support of the Church, Festival and Chapter. Without your hard work and dedication we could not do what we do. We supported the veterans with care packages at the VA hospital. We sent all our Metropolis Seminarians a card and token every month this year. We started our first Philoptochos Chapter Cookbook. We hopefully will go to Print in August. These are just a few of our accomplishments and enthusiastic about how much more we can do. We are excited for the upcoming new Ecclesiastical year as we moved our meetings to Sundays in the hopes that many more of you can attend our monthly meetings. We are also planning new and exciting things and are looking forward to accomplishing more fruitful endeavors. As I look back on my first year as President I am fortunate to belong to a ministry that s mission is to do so many good and worthwhile deeds. I am thankful for your continued support and wisdom. 4 VACATION CHURCH SCHOOL - GREEK SCHOOL St. Stefanos Greek Orthodox Church 2016 Vacation Church School Monday, June 13th thru Thursday, June 16th from 9:00am to 2:00pm FREE Lunch Provided Open to all children who have completed Kindergarten thru 6th Grade Greek School News Greek School Commencement took place on May 15 th in conjunction with Sunday School Commencement. Seeing our children gathered together created such a heartwarming scene! Mr. Terry Tsafatinos, President of the Laconian Society, presented several awards to our students for their Greek School accomplishments. The community of St. Stefanos would like to thank Mr. Tsafantinos and the Laconian Society for their continuous generous support of our Greek School program. We would also like to thank our sponsors who have supported our program throughout the year: the Kokkinakos family, the Filides family, and the Panhellenic Federation of Florida. Please remember that Greek School is not just for our youth; adult classes are also available. Please feel free to contact me at anytime throughout the summer with your questions. 5 G.O.Y.A NEWS and Other Dates The annual St. John s Junior Olympics will take place June 17 19, The registration packets have already been distributed in church and via . Students that are graduating 6 th grade and are entering 7 th grade this fall are eligible to begin participating in GOYA events including this event. Registration cost for the event is $60 per Goyan, with each additional Goyan in the same family at $40 per person. St. Stefanos GOYA will be funding the costly expense of the hotel rooms for our Goyans and the team fee of $250. If anyone would like to make a donation to help fund our GOYA team, it would be greatly appreciated. Hotel fees alone are over $1000! No donation is too small! Please feel free to reach out to Sandra Johnson or Visha Anevich with any questions. We look forward to publishing photos of our Goyans at Junior Olympics next month! Mark your calendars for our own St. Stefanos GOYA Volleyball Tournament to be held on October 21 23, Graduating Seniors may participate as this will be their last GOYA function. Students that are currently in 6 th grade and will be entering the 7 th grade in the fall, are also eligible to participate in this event as incoming GOYAns. 6 AHEPA and FOOD FOR THOUGHT St. Petersburg AHEPA Family Scholarship Foundation held its Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet on May 6, 2016 at Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club. Past recipient Kimberly Ferris, (candidate for Juris Doctor and MBA at the time) was our key note speaker. We would like to thank her for her inspiring speech and congratulate her on her graduation from Stetson University College of Law with her law degree. Congratulations to the following recipients who received scholarships this year presented by Scholarship Chairperson Dr. Linda Murray. Michael Detsis, Alexander Gregory, Nicolous Halverson, John Tischner and Garyfallia Zacharopoulou. Kαι σε ανωτερα! The following three students also received Scholarships from AHEPA Citrus District 2 Scholarship Foundation, presented by Charles Stamoulis, Foundation Chairman. Alexander Gregory received the Steno Augustine Memorial Scholarship, Michael Detsis received one of the George and Poppy Apostolou Scholarships and Nicolous Halverson also received one of the George and Poppy Apostolou Scholarships. Aeneas Chapter also honored Dr. Linda Murray with her Penelope of the Year Pin, presented by past Penelope of the Year Sandra Carnevale with District Governor Stella Sirks. Suzy Balasis and Stacy Segallis were presented with 25 pins, Denise Santoleri with a 30 year pin, Nicky Stamoulis, PGP with a 40 year pin, Jessie Scofield, PDG with a 65 year pin. James Scofield Chapter recognized past President Joseph Spampinato with a pin, and George Apostolou and Peter Segallis received their 25 year pins. Congratulations to ALL! (1.) Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That's FAITH. (2.) When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That's TRUST. (3.) Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set the alarms to wake up. That's HOPE. (4.) We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That's CONFIDENCE. (5.) We see the world suffering, but still we get married and have children. That's LOVE. (6.) On an old man's shirt was written a sentence, ' I am not 80 years old... I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience. That's ATTITUDE. Have a happy day and live your life like the six stories!

St. Stefanos Philoptochos is compiling a community cookbook that we plan to have published over the summer and available for sale this fall. Each recipe will bear the name of the chef and will be a treasure to hand down to the next generation. Please submit your recipes either typed or clearly printed. Include your name, your phone number, and the name you want attached to the recipe. Recipes can be sent to Suzy Balasis frazzledlib@gmail.com or dropped off in the church office marked Cookbook. Submissions are not limited to Philoptochos members, members of this parish, or women! I know some of you gentlemen are excellent chefs how about sharing with the rest of us?
