ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Father Terry Kerner This week the American Church celebrates Catholic Schools Week. Our Archdiocesan Catholic Schools fully participate in this weeklong recognition of and appreciation for their contribution to our society and country. With the aging of Dearborn s Catholic population over the decades we no longer enjoy the number of schools we once experienced. The ones still operating are excellent and we as a parish try to support them financially and encourage our children to attend. We do help students with tuition aid when appropriate. Parents making their commitment to Catholic Schools can and do deserve some help and moral support. We as a parish, though not having our own parish school can claim access for our children to several excellent programs. Certainly St. Sebastian and Sacred Heart School are nearest to us. But we also have St. Francis Cabrini and Divine Child schools to serve us. I encourage your moral and spiritual, and when possible, your financial support for any one of these fine institutions. If you want to see just how really good they are, two are having open houses this Sunday. From 11 AM 2 PM St. Sebastian will be conducting tours of their fine school; Sacred Heart will do the same from12:30 PM 2 PM. Students in each school proudly display their talented art and science projects and more importantly their joyful smiles. Know that you are welcome to share their pride in their school! Lent is just around the proverbial corner and we have listed in this week s bulletin several events and projects we will be conducting during March. Let us know with a note, a call, or the coupon in the paper if you wish to lend a hand with any of them. You don t have to chair just help in any way you would like. It s called Community and Fellowship -something we can all share in at St. Kateri. It has been pointed out that folks needing to participate in Mass in the Gathering Space because of health or having little ones miss the offertory collection at times. Far be it from this Pastor to overlook that desire!. Henceforth, they will find a locked offertory receptacle near the entrance to the church. Look for it near the entry to the Shrine area-the area with the Blessed Mother and all the candles. You can place your offertory or any other donation in it if you do not come into the church proper. Sunday, February 4, 2018, is rather special for me this year. On that date not only will yours truly, an avid football fan, enjoy the Super Bowl, but also celebrate my Forty-Six anniversary of Ordination. What a run for me and those Patriots!

2 Page 2 PARISH NEWS FAITH FORMATION ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES: Have you received Baptism and Eucharist but not Confirmation? A 6 week course preparing adults for Confirmation will begin following the celebration of Easter. The one night a week programs meets at St. Kateri and is open to all Catholics wishing to complete this Sacrament. If you or someone you know wishes more information, please contact the Faith Formation Director in the parish office. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION & RCIA: Currently in our parish two young boys are preparing for the Sacrament of 1st Eucharist in May, five middle schoolers are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Fall of 2019, and one woman is completing her studies for her full initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil this March. Please keep Marie, Abby, Emily, Wilson, Sonny, Bobby, Harrison and Maximus in your prayers as they continue on their journey of faith. CLASSES: Sacramental Preparation classes will meet next on Monday, February 5th at 6 PM. SCHOOL BELLS Sacred Heart Open House: Sunday, January 28th at 12:30 PM. For more information, call St. Sebastian Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast: Sunday, February 4th in the Activities Center. Open House & Science Fair: Sunday, January 28th from 11 AM 2 PM. Please come and take a tour. We offer Little Learners for age 3, Preschool and Kindergarten through 8th Grade. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS By Pat Urban & Barb Cataldo Thanks to those who picked up house blessing kits these past few weeks. We were overwhelmed by the response about 250 kits were distributed. Let us know of your experience at home. It is always helpful to get your suggestions and feedback. Your donations were used to buy the supplies and needs of the parish. There are still some kits left if you were unable to pick one up. The house blessing can be done at any time of the year. We have more Blessed Solanus Casey items available. The Solanus Casey Guild, which supplies us, had received over 2,000 orders after the Beatification Mass. They were backlogged but have since been able to fill our order. We have books, pocket coins, statues, and key chains. There is a beautifully written comic book about Blessed Solanus for children. Come in and browse. Just a reminder: The Saint Kateri canonization commemorative coins are still available at the Gift Shop and in the Parish Office. The donation of $10 is appreciated and remember the donation will go to the Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota. TIME FOR EASTER FLOWER TRIBUTE Once again it is time to honor your living and deceased family and friends for Easter. You may use the form inserted in next week s bulletin or the envelope in your church packet. PLEASE print all names clearly. We are beginning this tribute early this time so all names will be able to appear in the Easter bulletin and not published at a later date. We suggest $5 per name, but all donations are appreciated. 3 Page 3 (Continued from page 2) LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE There are several events scheduled for this Lent at St Kateri, all of which could use volunteers in various capacities. Listed below is a date and description of event. If you could help, simply check the line and you will be contacted. Please return your commitment form to the Parish Office or drop it off in the collection basket. MARCH 1. LINEN COLLECTION (Feb. 26-March 18) This is a three-week program involving collection of sheets, towels, and toiletries for Nativity parishioners and needy outlet centers in Detroit. Contributions can be left in the vestibules of church. Volunteers needed on Monday, March 19 for sorting and delivering :00 AM -ANOINTING MASS/SOUP & SALAD LUNCHEON- (Friday, March 2). This event involves making salads and meatless homemade soups. The Parish will pay for ingredients. Cook and help needed for setup, serving and clean-up. 3. ST. PATRICK S DAY IRISH STEW DINNER (Saturday, March 17) 5:00 PM 7:00 PM. This event involves decorating the dining space, serving coffee and stew at the buffet-style meal. 4. PALM SUNDAY PANCAKE BREAKFAST (Palm Sunday, March 25,) 10AM 12:30PM This involves decorating, limited cooking, serving coffee and juice, and clean up. (Pancakes prepared by professional: Jack the Flipper.) 5.CHILDREN S EASTER EGG HUNT (Palm Sunday, March 25) 12:15 PM This involves you laying and hiding eggs on church grounds, supervising with parents in two groups of children (ages:2-5 and 6-9).One thousand pre-filled plastic eggs expected to be collected within minutes. 6. PALM WEAVING. (Palm Sunday, March 25)10 AM 12:15 PM This event invites volunteers to share their family traditions and talents weaving crosses and processional palms from ones blessed and distributed this weekend. Event held in Resurrection Hall (Gathering Space) 7. HOT CROSS BUNS AND COFFEE SOCIAL (Holy Thursday, March 29) 8 PM 9:30 PM This is held in the St. Francis Room (Parish Hall) after the Liturgy of the Lord s Supper. 4 Page 4 TRAVEL SURVEY We are in the process of planning a Fall, 2018, trip and we are asking for your opinion in this survey. Please select the trip that s of interest to you and return this form in the collection basket or to the church office by February 4, We look forward to your input. Montreal and Quebec city visiting St. Anne de Beaupre, Notre Dame Basilica, St. Joseph s Oratory and St. Kateri s tomb. We would also have guided tours of Montreal and old Quebec City. This is a bus trip and it would be approximately 5 nights in duration. A Passport is required. Gettysburg, Washington DC, Annapolis and Pittsburgh. We would tour the battlefields and the Naval Academy, visit the shrines of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Katherine Drexel and take a night tour of the Washington DC monuments. Visits to the Immaculate Conception Basilica and the newly opened Bible Museum would be included. This is a bus trip and it would be approximately 6 nights in duration. There is no commitment on your part if you include your name and phone number. We just might want to contact you and ask your opinion about other aspects of these trips. Pat Ayland Name Phone Number THANK YOU FROM NATIVITY PARISH Dear St. Kateri Parishioners, We at Nativity of Our Lord, thank you for your generosity and your continued support of our Christmas Assistance Program. We appreciate your understanding of not wrapping the gifts this year. Our families came in and they were able to pick their children s gifts. Even with six inches of snow dumped on us, school being dismissed early and then cancelled one day, we had over 100 family come and shop. Our parents were then able to wrap their gifts also. There are very few resources for the poor in the zip code It is a large area with some of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. With your help, we are still able to be a beacon of hope to those in need. This year, again with your help, there were over 400 children who had something to open Christmas morning. We thank you for your assistance and ask God to bless you for your generosity.
