ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Father Terry Kerner St. Kateri parishioners can be proud of their kind generosity over the Advent and Christmas Seasons! Over 1300 gifts and greetings were collected for our three charities on the Giving Tree and members of the armed Forces. In addition to this giving we also received $2,355 for food purchases. This year the bulk of this cash will go to the St. Leo Soup Kitchen. We should all be grateful that we are in a place in our lives that we can be so concerned and generous to others. You have helped many folks to a truly Merry Christmas! This weekend we celebrate Epiphany and the visitation of the Magi to the Christ Child. An old custom for many Catholic families is to bless their homes the beginning of every year on this feast. This year the Gift shop has ordered kits for the blessing including the incense and formal prayer for this custom. The kits will be blessed and are available for a small donation. You may want to consider observing this custom this year and dedicating your home as a safe place for a holy family namely your own! I am happy to report proceeds from donations for the St. Kateri Canonization medallion we exhibited in October raised $436 for the Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota. The Jesuit run school is the largest privately funded Indian School in the United States, educating nearly 600 students on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in a remote part of South Dakota since Noted for its high standards of excellence, one of its 2017 high school graduates received a full scholarship to Harvard this past year. The St. Kateri Canonization medallion is available in the parish office and the gift Shop for a $10 donation which goes directly to the program at Red Cloud. It has often been said that our parish is blessed with volunteers in so many different ways. Deacon Tom is inviting any parishioner, of any age or gender to consider serving one of the Masses on weekends. The Liturgy is particularly in need of servers. We encourage not only boys and girls but also their parents, singles and even senior citizens who at one time when growing up served Mass and are not retired from serving. If you have an interest just let Deacon Tom or myself know and we will work you into the rotation schedule. An ancient custom in the early church was to announce on Epiphany the dates of moveable feasts for the year. Over time the custom became associated with the distribution of the parish calendar. (Please thank Tom Metcalf for his annual sponsorship of our parish calendar.) Be aware that Ash Wednesday is only six weeks away on February 14th and that means Easter is just 12 weeks ahead on April 1st no kidding. Try to enjoy some quiet January days.

Browning Chief, Volunteer and Community Relations JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS By Pat Urban & Barb Cataldo Epiphany House Blessing It has been a somewhat forgotten tradition in the American Church to bless homes on or around the Feast of the Epiphany. The blessing is usually performed by family members who recite a prayer, sprinkle holy water, light incense and chalk the home s entrance doorposts with the inscription 20+C+M+B+18. What looks like a math equation are actually symbols that remind us of our dedication to God in everyday life. It also reminds us to be welcoming to all those who enter our homes. 3 Page 3 (Continued from page 2) The numbers 20, 18 refer to the year of the blessing. The letters abbreviate the Latin words, Christus mansionen benedicat which means, May Christ bless this house. The + signs represent the cross. Pope Francis speaks much about our domestic churches...our homes where our faith is lived out in a concrete way each day (not just set aside for church on Sunday). The house blessing can be a way of reminding ourselves of this concept. We invite you to adopt this beautiful custom. To assist you, we have assembled small kits of incense, water, chalk and sample prayer. The kits will be blessed at the 4 PM Mass on Saturday, January 6th, the Feast of Epiphany. Donations to cover the cost of the items would be appreciated. JUST A REMINDER The Saint Kateri canonization commemorative coins are still available at the Gift Shop and in the Parish Office. The donation of $10 is appreciated and remember the donation will go to the Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota. LOST AND FOUND If you have lost jewelry during these past few weeks, please call the office at or drop in to claim your articles. VICARIATE St. Sebastian As we look forward to the New Year, BRICK (the St. Sebastian high school youth group) is preparing for our annual retreat. Each year we take around 20 teens to spend a weekend developing their relationship with Christ. This year we are attending the YMCA camp in Jackson, MI from April 13th to the 15th. The teens will unplug from the world and the internet, and focus on meeting Jesus. I would like to take this time to beg you to encourage, motivate and force the teens in your life to attend. For many it is a life changing experience where they start to see their relationship with Jesus as personal and begin to take ownership of the faith. If you don t have any teens able to attend, please consider donating to those who are unable because of cost ($100). It is never too late to join our group. We meet most Monday s at 7 PM in room 118 of St. Sebastian School, across from the parish office. Please contact me for more information. May you meet the child Jesus anew this Christmas season and draw ever closer to His warm and loving heart. 4 Page 4 Los Reyes Magos While most children in the United States are accustomed to receiving gifts on Christmas Day, in many Hispanic cultures, it is Epiphany, or the Day of the Three Kings, when gifts celebrating the birth of Christ usually appear. On the night of January 5, hay and a bucket of water are left outside the house for the camels who carry the Magi. A box or old shoes are put under the bed in which the Wise Men will leave gifts for the children. On the evening of January 6 families gather for dinner, and cut into the rosca de reyes, a ring-shaped sweet bread decorated with candied fruit. Baked inside is a small figure of baby Jesus. Whoever finds the figure in his or her piece will host the final feast of the Christmas season, el día de la Candelaria on February 2. On that day new clothes are presented to enrobe the figure of baby Jesus in the Nativity scene of the family or the church. Liturgical Publications Inc THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Isaiah 60:1-5 Ephesians 3:2-03A, 5-6 Matthew 2:1-12 We Three Kings of Orient are bearing gifts, we traverse afar. So goes the popular song we ll likely hear this Sunday. Each verse highlights one of the gifts the Magi bring. Homilies sometimes include asymbolic breakdown of each of the gifts and how they point to Christ s kingship, priestly role, and his death. Most of us won t see much gold in our lifetime, and we probably need to Google frankincense and myrrh. At Epiphany, we often focus on what the wise men brought. We call them saints for their devotion. But, interestingly enough, they likely died before Christ died and rose from the dead. A missionary apostle never reached them, and they were never baptized.we know little about them, their background, or their specific education. Were they truly kings? Were they learned scholars? Whatever their career, we know that they were truly wise men for their pursuit of truth and their openness to the revelation of God. The Magi offer us unique gifts. These gifts aren t tangible items brought to us. They re attitudes of the heart that can bring us to the One who brought them to Bethlehem. The first gift iscuriosity. To know that the star was a meaningful sign, the Magi needed to be inquisitive. The example of the Magi teaches us to be curious about the world, whether it s economics, health care structures, parenting philosophies, the consumption of gluten, orstar Wars: The Last Jedi. Curiosity should extend to our faith as well. The Catholic Church is rich in Scripture, saints, sacraments, and more. There s always a new area to explore! The second gift ishumility. The Magi weren t Jewish. And yet when they encountered the star, its rising, and its deeper meaning in Jesus birth, their desire was to do him homage. The beauty of the sign attracted them. We, too, are invited to be humble before truth when we find it..our encounters with other people their stories, their viewpoints, their challenges should also be approached with humble respect and dignity. The third gift ismovement. The journey from Persia to Palestine was no easy trek in the first century. The Magi s pursuit of truth meant effort and sacrifice. If we re serious about seeking truth, it will require something of us. We cannot see Christ and remain as we are. Like the Magi, we, too, are invited to draw near to God, to walk by the light of God s truth, and to invite others to join us in gathering around the babe in Bethlehem. This Epiphany, consider how God might be inviting you to grow in curious seeking, humble encountering, and movement towards truth.
