ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK By Father Terry This coming Friday is St. Patrick s Day! While many Irish Catholics in our midst would love to see this as a Holy Day, it is not. At the same time it is a great day to celebrate with the Irish and remember their tremendous contribution to the American Church starting with the immigrants from the Emerald Island more than 150 years ago. All are welcome to celebrate the feast at the 9:00 AM Mass on Friday. I will also be attending later in the morning the annual St. Patrick s Mass at Holy Trinity Church. All are welcome to attend that Mass as well. St. Patrick s Day always occurs somewhere in Lent and every seven years falls on a Lenten Friday a day of abstinence from meat. This Friday is one of those times. Invariably the question arises regarding a dispensation from the Friday abstinence. A number of years ago Cardinal Maida granted a blanket dispensation to all Catholics in the Archdiocese. This time Archbishop Vigneron has left the decision up to the local pastor to grant or not grant permission to have meat this Friday. I suspect the phone at the parish office will be ringing with requests this week. So let s do this: pastoral permission is granted to eat meat on St. Patrick s day as long as it is in the context of celebrating the spirit of the day. In other words, go ahead and eat the corned beef and cabbage or Irish stew and enjoy it. Please use your common sense in your decision making. Please remember that this is not a dispensation from doing a penance, but rather permission to dispense from the usual Lenten penance of abstinence on Fridays. We all still need to perform penance. Maybe you might want to give up meat next Thursday or some other act of penance, be creative. I wonder what St. Patrick would do! Have a great Lenten Season. FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos IT S OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY! This year marks our 25th anniversary of collecting for Towel Sunday. Digging into the bound copies of our parish bulletins, I have discovered that this amazing service project was first mentioned in I am told by more than one of our wiser and experienced parishioners that this project was started by one of our active parishioners of the time, the late Matt Zipple. How wonderful that we carry on such a giving and necessary project today. In three weeks, we will be collecting toiletries, new and gently used towels (washcloths, hand & bath), new hooded baby towels, new sets of bedding (TWIN SIZE ONLY), feminine hygiene products and incontinence (Continued on page 2)

2 Page 2 (Continued from page 1) items. Collection runs from Saturday, March 25th through Sunday, April 9th. In speaking with the representative of each of our recipients from our Towel Sunday collection, they have expressed their gratitude to our generosity year after year. Both Freedom House and Workers House also expressed the financial strains that the organizations have been under, especially due to the lack of funding and grants not being renewed. If you are interested in contributing financially to either Freedom House or Workers House, please consider writing out a check to either one of these organizations and dropping it in the offertory collection. Your financial contribution will be delivered along with items collected. Volunteers will be needed on Monday, April 10th to sort, count, pack up and deliver our contributions to Nativity Parish of Our Lord, Freedom House and Workers House. For more information, contact the school office at LENTEN DISCIPLINES OF FASTING & ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of total fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. In keeping with the spirit and meaning of the Lenten fast, Catholics are encouraged to observe the Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil. 1. The law of fasting binds persons from the completion of their 18th year to the beginning of their 60th year. In other words, we are bound to this law from the day after our 18th birthday to the day before our 60th birthday. 2. The Church defines fasting as one meal a day and two smaller meals which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The drinking of ordinary liquids does not break the fast. 3. The law of abstinence binds persons from the day after their 14th birthday, throughout life.; This law forbids the use of meat (beef, pork, poultry), but not eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS Since our olive wood comfort crosses have been so popular, we have made arrangements to obtain other olive wood items from the company that manufactures them in Bethleham, Our shop has stocked small standing crosses, chaplets and rosaries in beautiful olive wood boxes. Some items contain third class relics of cloth touched to the tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem. A selection of traditional First Communion and Confirmation prayer books, bibles, rosaries, jewelry and gifts are now on display and available. Did you know that the popular Little Black Books: distributed for Lent were originally written by Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw? The Gift and Book Shop carries his biography, My Name is Ken. Bishop Untener s story tells of his childhood growing up on Belle Isle in Detroit, playing hockey, and his journey as a seminarian and priest. A very inspirational life! TRAVEL THE BEST OF ANN ARBOR By Pat Ayland Mark your calendars Friday, June 30, We will be going on a day trip to Ann Arbor and visiting the Matthaei Botanical Gardens, the U of M Football stadium and much more. Lunch is planned at The Gandy Dancer a favorite for many. The cost is $88 and the approximate timing is 9 AM to 6 PM. We will be departing from and returning to the St. Kateri parking lot.
