Terry Kerner As you read this column you are probably more than aware that in two weeks we will be celebrating Christmas and all the joyful blessings it brings. This year s shorter Advent shouldn t cause us to be alarmed and worried about being ready for Christmas. It can be an opportunity to think about what really is important in your life and your Christmas. Knowing all the gifts you have been given over the years and realizing the gift YOU are to others makes for a wonderful Advent meditation. Think about it. Considering your spiritual life this time of year is also a good time to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance. For some the idea of going to confession has a very negative and maybe even a degrading connotation. Actually, it s just the opposite. For when you make your examination of conscience you are acknowledging your virtues and values that you have violated or ignored. In other words, you are sorry for not utilizing and living out the virtues you possess through Baptism. Another way of saying it in the sacrament of Penance is simply to recognize your goodness and the strength of your virtues with a firm desire to embrace them more firmly. Showing up at a penance service means you have already admitted your need to do this and accept the words of Christ s forgiveness through the priest confessor. This coming week is filled with plenty of opportunities to celebrate your goodness through the sacrament. Communal Penance Services are scheduled this week at St. Alphonsus St. Clement on Tuesday at 7:00 PM, St. Sebastian on Wednesday at 6:00 PM, and St. Kateri on Saturday at 11:00 AM. I will be at all three and hope to see you at one of them. Have a holy Advent. 2 Page 2 PARISH NEWS FAITH FORMATION Classes continue for Faith Formation through December 16th. The Giving Tree still has some tags available for Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Vista Maria, and St. Patrick s Senior Center. They are very grateful for our kindness. We encourage all who may not have had a chance to select a tag to pick one or more up this weekend. Gifts may be returned until Sunday, December 18th. Please remember that items are not to be wrapped this year at the request of our recipients. Food donations can be made in checks, cash or gift cards from Meijer s or Kroger s. We are truly grateful for your kindness and your generosity. May God continue to bless you. Our Holiday Mail for Heroes has truly been a success. We will submit our final count in next week s bulletin. Once again we thank you for taking the time to remember those who are defending our country. CHRISTMAS TRIBUTE FLOWER DEADLINE DECEMBER 10TH It is once again flower tribute time for our living and deceased we wish to honor at the altar at Christmas time. You may use the envelopes in your packet or fill out the flyer included in last week s bulletin. We ask that you print legibly all names to aide us in the correct spelling of your loved ones. We also suggest a donation of $5 per name, but all donations are appreciated. Please note that the deadline is very important since we must have the Christmas and New Year s bulletin in by December 14th. We are sorry for the early date, but it is beyond our control. Late names will appear in the January 7th bulletin. It has also been suggested that you may wish to list the Family Name with your donation rather than each name individually. This would guarantee that no member of the family has been omitted. RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Parishes across the Archdiocese will take up a special collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious this weekend, December Contributions will help provide funding for medications, nursing care, and more for thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Please consider contributing generously to this important collection. Elderly religious need your help. There are more than 32,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests living in the United States. Through prayer, love, and sacrifice, they established schools, hospitals, and more. Yet years of serving for little or no pay have left a shortage in retirement funding. Your gift helps their communities furnish necessities such as medications and nursing care. Please be generous this weekend. 3 Page 3 OPłATKI The tradition of the Opłatki originated in Poland during Early Christian times. This Christmas Custom began with a simple white wafer, baked from flour and water. The wafers are wonderfully designed to display Christmas images, such as the Nativity. Families enjoy the Opłatki typically right before the Christmas Eve meal. The entire family will gather around the table with the Opłatek. Generally, the eldest member of the family will begin the ritual by breaking off a piece of the wafer and passing it to another family member with a blessing. This blessing can simply consist of what you desire for your loved one in the upcoming year-whether it be good health, success or happiness.. The purpose of this act is primarily to express ones unconditional love and forgiveness for each member of his or her family. The significance of the Opłatki Christmas wafer is that it shadows the Eucharistic meal that Catholics participate in at each Mass. Just as we share in the Eucharist as one family in Christ and receive Christ s love through the Eucharist, the Opłatki allows for one s immediate family to come together and share the love they have for one aother. The Opłatki tradition is one that is easy and fun to introduce to the family at Christmas time. All it requires is a simple wafer paired with love and affection, and the willingness to share it. This is a heartwarming tradition that will complete your family s time together during the Christmas season. Opłatek are available in the Gift Shop and the Parish Office. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Msgr. Schulte Assembly of the 4th degree is sponsoring Wreaths Across America that will be held at St. Hedwig Cemetery on Saturday, December 16th. You can help by purchasing a wreath for $15 that will be placed on the grave of the one of many service men and women that are buried at St. Hedwig. Veronica s Catering will be back on Friday, January 5th, FROM THE VICARIATE Hispanic Ministries On December 9, 1531 the Blessed Virgin Mary first appeared to a simple native Mexican near Mexico City. St. Juan Diego s feast day is this Saturday, and is followed by the feast day for Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, December 12. Archbishop Vigneron will celebrate Mass at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral this Monday, December 11, in honor of these important feasts to our Hispanic Catholic community. The evening will begin at 5 PM with the Rosary and dancers before the 7 PM MASS. Flowers for Our Lady are welcomed. 4 Page 4 REFLECTION OF THE FR. SOLANUS CASEY BEATIFICATION I was so happy to be among the nearly 71,000 who filled Ford Field as Blessed Solanus was officially raised to the altars. I have been to bigger Catholic Masses World Youth Day, mega-beatifications and canonizations in Rome, and various other papal liturgies but never to a Mass so big that retained such a small feel. Ford Field was like the first Blessed Solanus Casey Parish. Everyone sang with gusto the hymns and Mass parts. Everyone laughed in unison a sign of how much everybody was paying attention at Cardinal Angelo Amato s juke that Fr. Solanus had one little defect namely, he was a bad musician. Now as a diocese we are being called to pray for the canonization of Fr. Solanus. Prayer for the Canonization of Fr. Solanus Casey Of God, I adore you, I give myself to you. May I be the person you want me to be, And may your will be done in my life today. I thank you for the gifts you gave Father Solanus. If it is your will, bless us with the canonization of Fr. Solanus So that others may imitate and carry on his love for all the poor And suffering of the world. As he joyfully accepted your divine plans, I ask you, according to your will To hear my prayer for [your intention] Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessed be God in all his designs. Vigneron ADOPT A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS You can relieve some of the financial burdens for needy families throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit and make their Christmas a little brighter through the CCSEM Adopt a Family for Christmas program. Nominated by Catholic parishes throughout the Archdiocese, these families are in need of help with basic necessities like food, rent, utilities and medical care.
