3 3 December 24, th Sunday of Advent A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Every Christmas, we hear those familiar words from the Gospel of Luke: Let this be a sign to you: in a manger you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. On Christmas, we celebrate a profound mystery of our faith: the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, God becoming flesh. God, in the person of Jesus Christ, has come to visit us. All we can do is reflect and ponder such a mystery. Whenever we decorate for Christmas, we always make sure the crèche or the nativity scene is in a prominent place. It may be placed under the Christmas tree or displayed on a mantel. St. Francis of Assisi created the first crèche using real people, a real manger, a real donkey and ox and real shepherds. He did this because he wanted to do something that would help people remember the Christ child and how He was born n Bethlehem, to see and experience Jesus in the manger, lying on hay with animals nearby. A great tradition began and continues to this very day. As you look upon your Nativity set, please remember God s great love for us. To show his abundant love, mercy and forgiveness, God became flesh. During the Christmas season, I invite everyone to take time to visit the crèche in our church. Please spend time in quiet prayer and awe of God being born into our world. In the gathering area of the church, we have a large Christmas tree which is decorated with chrismons. A chrismon is a symbol for Christ and is made of white and gold material. Some examples are: a manger, a star, an angel, a shepherd s staff, a chalice, a cross, the Alpha and Omega, and a Chi-Rho. Please take the time to examine and identify these chrismons. As a reminder, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, on January 1, 2018 is NOT a holyday of obligation this year. Consequently, we will only have one Mass on Monday, January 1 st, at 8:00 a.m. May this feast of Christmas fill your hearts with joy and peace. Christmas blessing upon all of you! YÜA V{Ü áåxü? The weeks of Advent waiting are over, and Christ is born! We rejoice in our Savior s birth - remembering the great gift of faith He has given us through the mystery of His incarnation and the saving power of His death and resurrection. Each year, the people of our archdiocese have been asked to make a special gift on Christmas Day to support our seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. The men of our seminary, who have responded to Christ s call to follow Him, are truly a gift to the Church and to the Archdiocese of St. Louis. It is these men who will bring the faith given to us by Christ 2000 years ago to future generations here in the Archdiocese of St. Louis I ask you, once again, to pray for vocations and for all our priests and seminarians. I also ask you to be generous in your donation to the Christmas Day collection, which helps to pay the day-to-day expenses and maintenance of our seminary. Please be assured of my prayers for you during the season of Christmas. May the Lord of life come into your hearts and homes in a special way during this holy time of year. Poland) Feast: August Saint Maximilian was born on January 17, 1894 in Zdunska Wola, Poland, and given the name Raymond. When he was still a child he had a vision in which Our Lady held out to him two crowns, one white, the other red, asking him to choose between the two. The white symbolized purity and the red symbolized martyrdom. Raymond chose both of them. When he was only 17, he joined the Conventual Franciscans, and seven years later he was ordained Father Maximilian. Saint Maximilian Kolbe carried Christ's message from Poland all the way to Japan, setting up small towns and naming them after Our Lady. When World War II broke out Maximilian was in Poland. He was captured by the Germans and sent to the concentration camp of Auschwitz. At Auschwitz, one of the horrible rules was that any time a prisoner escaped, ten others would be condemned to death by starvation. One day, after an escape, the guards were choosing ten prisoners to die. One man cried out when he was chosen, saying that he had a wife and children. Risking the cruelty of the guards, Saint Maximilian intervened and offered his own life instead. The guards asked why he should die in the other man's place. Saint Maximilian Kolbe replied: "I am a Catholic priest." Everyone at Auschwitz was surprised to hear prayers and songs coming from the starvation bunker. but those inside had been inspired by the holiness and leadership of Saint Maximilian. After a few weeks. Kolbe was still alive. so his guards murdered him with a fatal injection. He died on the vigil of the Solemnity of the Assumption, and so was able to celebrate it with Our Lady in heaven. receiving there both of the crowns of purity and martyrdom that she had offered to him as a child.
