3 3 November 26, 2017 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Next week, we enter the very brief, yet hopeful, season of Advent. The Church tells us that Advent has a twofold character: a season to prepare for Christmas when Christ s first coming to us is remembered and a season to await Christ s second coming at the end of time. Each year during Advent, the Church recalls for us the profound mystery that Christ, who came once in the flesh, will come again. During Advent, the haunting melody and refrains of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel are to remind us of our longing for the completion of Christ s reign at the end of time. This season gives special meaning to the phrase from the Lord s Prayer, thy kingdom come. The Scripture readings heard during Advent tell us of God s coming in Christ. The first Sunday focuses on the coming of Christ at the end of time---the second coming or parousia. The second and third Sundays focus on the coming of Christ today, to us and to our world. The fourth Sunday focuses on the coming of Christ in history as a child born in Bethlehem. In the gathering area of the church, you will find our Advent Wreath. If you normally enter or exit the church by one of the side doors, you may want to stop by the main gathering space of the church to see our Advent wreath during the next four weeks. I strongly encourage every household to have an Advent wreath on your dinner table for the weeks of Advent. It can add a strong faith dimension to your family. Finally, Advent material is available in the Gathering Area. For adults, we have Jesus God s Promise: Advent Devotions by Fr. Henri Nouwen. For families, we have Angels we have heard on High a sticker journey through Advent. Please take only one copy per household. ZÉw UÄxáá? `ázüa VtÄÄt{tÇ ADORATION OF THE LORD The Lord will reign as King forever, come let us worship Him in Eucharistic Adoration. Visit and worship the One True King! 6 6 November 19, 26, April 2017 April April 23, 2, 33 Our 2, 2017 rd 16, Lord Sunday 2017 Sunday Fifth Jesus in Easter Ordinary SUNDAY of Christ, Divine Sunday OF OF King Time Mercy LENT of the Universe 12 FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT In November, we are focusing on the fruit of Goodness. This virtue requires that we be in tune with who we are and with our own actions. When we practice goodness, we are putting God first, particularly when it comes to our decision-making. When we consider all of the challenges & obstacles present in the world, it can be tempting for Christians to run & hide. Yet Christ s command to His disciples is to go forth & share the Good News with all nations (Matthew 28: 18-20). It is not enough for us to simply avoid sin, we are called to bring light to the darkness & to speak truth to a world that falls so easily for lies. In the example of the saints, we see the undeniable beauty of holiness. God has created all humans with an innate attraction to goodness, truth, & beauty. The fruit of goodness in the life of a Christian points to the power of the Holy Spirit at work. Despite our shortcomings & our sins, the Holy Spirit gives us the grace of goodness if we are willing to as for it. When our relationship with Jesus is at the center of our lives & when prayer is the priority in our daily schedule, we grow in goodness & our presence alone becomes a powerful testimony to the reality of God s power. Here are some practical ways you can exhibit goodness in your life: Don t let yourself be tricked into equating material things for goodness. While buying gifts for others is a nice gesture, be sure to keep goodness at the center of your motivations! Along with his parents and his eight brothers and sisters, young Joseph moved to Naples, Italy, and would spend much of the rest of his life in that area, becoming acquainted who two other Italians who would also be venerated for their holiness of life: Blessed Bartolo Longo and Saint Catarina Volpicelli. When his brother Alberto was seriously injured in a military accident, Joseph observed the excellent medical care he received and resolved to pursue medicine as his profession, receiving his MD from the University of Naples in A man of deep faith who took a private vow of chastity and attended Mass daily, Dr. Moscati quickly won a reputation as a dedicated and compassionate physician. He was instrumental in the successful evacuation of a hospital destroyed by a volcano, in researching and developing measures to halt the spread of cholera, and in being on of the irst physicians in his area to use insulin in the treatment of diabetes. Dr. Moscati also directed a local school and received his license to teach clinical medicine. Saint Joseph Moscati saw his chief medical responsibility as contributing to the alleviation of suffering. Many times his ability to heal his patients involved their own faith and reception of the sacraments. He never charged the poor for his services, often tucking some money in the prescriptions he gave them. Miraculous cures were even attributed to his treatment of patients while he was still living, and after his sudden but peaceful death on April 12, 1927, prayers asking for his intercession were granted many times. Saint Joseph Moscati was canonized in 1987, after the mother of a young man cured of leukemia claimed a man in a white coat appeared in a dream to tell her that her son would live and then identi ied the man from a photograph as Dr. Joseph Moscati.
